Jamberoo ‘storm’ into Final……..

Our Jamberoo B Pennants Team have progressed into the Final after an emphatic 4-1 victory over The Links Shellcove. The side will now take on another undefeated side in Moss Vale in the Final (course and date TBA)

Overall Results:

Jamberoo 4-1 v The Links Shellcove

Vincentia 3-2 v Worrigee

Player Results:

Adrian Bell 5&4 WIN

Paul Hazeltine 2&1 LOSS

Tom Persson 6&5 WIN

Jarryd Buckley 4&3 WIN

Peter Munro 1up WIN

Pete Munro – Found himself down early and in a see sawing match sank some critical putts and eventually wore down his opponent to come away with a tense 1up win – great effort.

Jarryd Buckley – Got off to a lightning start and soon found himself 2 up but level at the turn. He then played some very solid golf to run away with the match 4&3 – great effort.

Tom Persson – Got off to a fast start and found himself 3 up at the turn and continued on to take his match 6&5.

Paul Hazeltine – Played a very tight match with no quarter given but unfortunately was unable to hold off his opponent, going down 2&1 in a quality match (this was Paul’s 1st loss in a great Pennants season)

Adrain Bell – Scrambled fantastically well early to keep his opponent at bay before finding his feet and then applying the blow torch to take his match 5&4 ( Adrian was the only player to go through undefeated having beaten every other sides No. 1’s – incredible effort)

Again thanks to Lance Fredericks, Ray Orr and Matt Bell for their presence and support and the Team certainly appreciated the support of Patrick Paris out on the course today, much appreciated Patrick, Thankyou.

Great Win!

WHITE HORSE CUP

Round 6  Played at Port Kemble v Sussex Inlet

What a difference a day or a week makes.

The heroes of Russell Vale the previous week, Steve Rippon and Wayne Griffiths were heroes again in the monthly medal on Saturday – Rippon posting a 66 off the beater for 62 net to win the A grade Medal with Griffo scoring a 66 net to be runner up in A grade.

But I guess all good things must come to an end and both of the stars walked off Port Kembla after the 13th hole, 7 down 5 to play, having been thoroughly trounced by their ruthless Sussex Inlet opponents who showed no mercy and no regard for our blokes’ fearsome reputations.  Sussex Inlet 2 Jamberoo  0.

Next to go was Tony McRae who soldiered on after his injury to lose at the 18th 2 down but his Sussex opponent was better able to cope with the stiff southerly being a big solid bloke of about 110 kg – it was reported that Tony was seen hanging onto a tree to prevent being blown back towards the clubhouse!

The “Big Fella” Andrew Craddock withstood a determined comeback from the Sussex Inlet no3 to post a good win 2up and cemented his place at Shellcove Links next week. Sussex Inlet 3 Jamberoo 1

Skipper Carr’s duty was to avoid a 4-1 drubbing but 4 down with 6 to play this seemed a forlorn fantasy.  However with the aid of his opponent’s water finding shots, scores were level playing the 18th. Carr’s putt for a win hung over the lip for a half at the last hole. Match all square. Sussex Inlet 3.5 Jamberoo 1.5.

Rounds 7 and 8 at the Links Shell Cove and Moss Vale will round the season out.  There’s always next year.

Pennant Squads Suffering – 10/3/13 Matches

THE Jamberoo Golf Club Pennant teams didn’t have such a good Sunday with both the C Pennant and White Horse Cup squads going down in hard fought encounters.

This leaves just the B Pennant team with a realistic chance of claiming a title this year. The so far unbeaten B’s had a bye this week and will face The Links Shell Cove at Kiama next week in a battle for a spot in the final.

Jamberoo v Kiama @ St. Georges Basin 10/03/2013

Jamberoo tornado peters out at St George’s Basin

Jamberoo 2 Kiama 3

They were simply too good on the day.

THE Jamberoo C pennant team will have to wait another year to go that next step and qualify for the final . Having won our previous matches convincingly, there was a true belief that this may be the year but it turns out not to be with Kiama taking the game and the Town and Country Cup for this year.

Fantastic wins were recorded by Tim Young  4/3 and Arthur Bosanquet 3/2 and 2nd places to Chris Leckey 6/5,Peter Francis 3/2 and Ron Chilby 2/1.

Tom Zimmermann and David Ransom had the break this week.

Congratulations to Arthur, Tom and Tim on unbeaten seasons.

In the end we have 7 very disappointed players ( beaten favourites ) who represented your club with skill and honour and I was proud to be associated with them and congratulate them for the way they played.

The C Pennant team will take some beating next year !!

Cheers

Chris Leckey

WHITE HORSE CUP

Round 6 – Russell Vale

From your correspondent Mick Carr Reporting from Jamberoo

TO paraphrase the immortal words of Mr Menzies (later to become Sir Robert) in September 1939 “It is my melancholy duty to inform you that the Jamberoo White Horse Cup team will not win the Cup in 2013″.

Another narrow defeat v The Grange at Russell Vale who won 3-2 has put paid to our quest for the holy grail of Jamberoo’s first men’s pennant, but it certainly wasn’t for the lack of trying.  Each of the five matches wasn’t decided until the 18th hole, Jamberoo gong down this time at the final hurdle to walk away again without a point for their efforts.

The war of attrition had no let up. Our No. 5 Brian O’Hare walked off the 18th one down after a struggle back from 4 down at one stage on the front nine – a fine effort and it is reported that Mr O’Hare’s previous nickname of Brian O’Tortoise has been consigned to the archives because his group’s match has to go down as the fastest eighteen holes ever played in White Horse Cup.

Warren Joannou was up against the wily old fox Terry Marples who your correspondent is advised has been playing White Horse Cup for fifty years.  Giving away four shots on this course to this bloke was always a case of pushing the proverbial uphill and this was especially so with his opponent having the pleasure of driving around this steep track in a cart.  The hills to the 16th and 17th tees would test a 30 year old triathlete so perhaps the rules should be changed so that if one player rides around his opponent should be allowed to ride too.  After the Kokodo Trail hills as mentioned sapping his energy Warren ended up 2 down on the 18th.

Skipper Carr snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!  The nine iron taken to the 15th green for a chip fom 3m turned out to be a 6 iron on arrival at the green resulting in a dud chip for a bogey because the lightning fast greens were beyong the capabilities of the Jamberoo player but to the liking of his opponent.  So Mick went from 2 up with four to play to lose 2 down at the 18th.  A disgraceful performance for which he should be dropped.

” Mr Reliable” Wayne Griffiths delivered again winning 2 up at the last after a glorious drive and a perfect pich to probably the most difficult green on the course. With the flag at the front and a steep slope towards the sea 25m putts were the order of the day here which were almost compulsorily three putts so to get it close and make par was indeed an heroic effort.

So the final match of the round came to the eighteenth.  Jamberoo’s Great White Hope with a dark suntan and white shoes, Steve Rippon, versus young Zac from the Grange – all square after 17, Steve having had to give his opponent 7 shots on this par three course – it was always going the be a struggle.  Off the tee Rip missed the fairway and hit a low 4 iron to 25m short.  Zac’s second also fell 20m short.  The gathered gallery hushed. Rip chipped but the ball hit a hard patch in front of the green and rolled 25m past down the slope.  Zav duffed his chip – still not to the green, his fourth rolling past 15m.  Sledging by the fanatical Grange supporters saw Rippon putt to 6 feet.  The Grange man could only do likewise.  Rip’s nailed the putt – 1up.  A fitting conclusion to the round.

Moss Vale, Port Kembla, Bowral and Sussex Inlet are fighting it out at the top of the leader board and there doesn’t appear to be a clear favourite to win our division, with three rounds to go Jamberoo will be in there fighting.

Special thanks to Tony McRae for caddying and his support at Russell Vale.  Tony played at Russell Vale in the mid-week comp but copped a ball in the mouth hit fom the 17th tee while he was walking to the 18th tee causing thousands of dollars worth of dental injury – we wish Tony a speedy recovery. Our walks from the 11th and 14th greens are somewhat similar so please be careful when negotiating these parts of our course.

Jamberoo’s 2013 pennant teams firing

JAMBEROO’S pennant teams continued on their winning ways with the B and C squads both having good wins over Nowra on Sunday. Full reports are below.

The fearsome reputation of the White Horse Cup team is obviously getting to their opponents, with the competition cancelled for the second week in a row. At least the Cuppers didn’t have to make a dawn trip through tornadic conditions to Bowral to discover the cancellation this Sunday, as they did to sunny Sussex Inlet last week.

B PENNANT

Jamberoo consolidate Top of the table position…………..

THE Jamberoo B Pennants team continued to perform with a strong 4-1 victory over Nowra. The Shoalhaven Heads course was in great nick and provided the opportunity for some great golf to be played. The win sets up a top of the table clash in a fortnight at Kiama against the Links for a place in the final.

Results today were:

Jamberoo 4 & 1 v Nowra

Kiama v The Links – result not known

Shoalhaven Heads v Vincentia – result not known

Worrigee BYE

Next week Jamberoo have the BYE

Player Results were –

Adrian Bell 3&2 WIN

Paul Hazeltine 1up WIN

Tom Persson 4&3 WIN

Ray Orr 4&3 WIN

Jarryd Buckley 2down LOSS

Ray Orr started the day well leading 3up after 3 holes and, in a quality match where birdies were at times needed to halve a hole, continued to play strongly to eventually run out 4&3 winner – great result.

Tom Persson also found himself 3 up after the front 9 and ran out 4&3 winner on the back of some solid putting and good iron shots in a game where his opponent played some good pressure golf.

Jarryd Buckley found himself in a tight contest and although being Dormie 3 down continued the fight before losing 2 down on the 18th.

Paul Hazeltine found himself 4 up early but his opponent fought back to have Paul 1 down with 2 to go. Paul never gave in and took both the 17th and 18th to take the match 1up – great result.

Adrian Bell found himself in a real dogfight early on, only a few holes were halved and the match continuing to fluctuate before once again our No.1 put the pedal to the metal and continued his unbeaten run to come away with a strong 3&2 win – great result.

Thanks again to both Lance Fredericks and Pete Munro for making the trip down to support the side, much appreciated.

The side now have a BYE next week before taking on the Links at Kiama on Sunday 16th March.

C PENNANT

Jamberoo v Nowra @ Nowra  Golf Club 3/3/2013

Jamberoo 4, Nowra 1

Jamberoo tornado hits Nowra golf course.

WHAT a fantastic result for the “Cs” beating the home team and moving within one game of qualifying for the final.

Tremendous wins were recorded by Peter Francis 7/6, Tom Zimmermann 5/3, Tim Young 4/3, Arthur Bosanquet 3/2 and a 1 down loss to Chris Leckey.

Peter showed his class again and with his daughter as caddy was the 1st to finish with a big win, well done mate.

Chris had a tough day at the office @ no.2 and was unable to get to the lead all match. The boys were very polite not to mention that mine is the only loss the team has had this season. Thanks champs.

The ever reliable Tom was playing a big hitter but never threw in the towel and eventually wore him out with his sharp short game for another big win.

Our newest recruit Arthur continues to impress with a fine win. Reports on course were that Arthur was all square well into the back nine but “Boz” ground out a great win, well done

Tim’s face lit up when he got the 11th hour call up to play, and after an indifferent game at Shoalhaven Heads on Saturday was worried his form was poor. It’s a funny game golf as we all know and Tim eased in with a big win. A “super” performance.

Special thanks to Dave Ransom for his knowledge and advice to our players during the round and for his skills on the rake back at our club.

This was the game we were worried about in our quest for this year’s title and results of other club matches leave us on top of our division.

Keep it up and well done.

Chris Leckey

B Pennant top their table, C’s a 5 – 0 win, White Horse squad in naughty corner

JAMBEROO Golf Club Pennant teams had a mixed weekend. The C Pennant squad had the best result with a resounding 5 – 0 win at home, the B Pennant team squared their match against Kiama and now sit alone atop the competition table, while the White Horse Cuppers may prove to be a huge waste of performance enhancing substances after all and are in the naughty corner after a disappointing 3 – 2 loss. Individual reports below.

B Pennant

Jamberoo claws out a point…………

After 3 rounds of the B Pennants Jamberoo remain the only undefeated side after a shared 2.5 v 2.5 match with competition heavyweights Kiama.

Played at a tight and at times unforgiving Vincentia course the match was halved at the 18th with the final pairings.

Overall Results: Jamberoo 2.5 v Kiama 2.5, Worrigee 2.5 v Nowra 2.5, Vincentia 3.5 v The Links 1.5, Shoalhaven Heads BYE.

Player Results: Adrian Bell WIN 4&3, Jarryd Buckley WIN 2&1, Paul Hazeltine SQUARE, Tom Persson LOSS 2&1, Pete Munro LOSS 5&4.

Pete Munro put his best foot forward but was a little out of sink and was unable to haul in his opponent.

Tom Persson’s play was like hearing someone scrap their finger nails against a blackboard – painful.

Paul Hazeltine battled hard all day in a quality match halving the 18th in a tension packed finish to the day’s events, great effort.

Jarryd Buckley trailed early but finding the greens to his liking was able to steadily wear down his opponent and come away with a solid 2 up win, well done.

Adrian Bell found himself behind early but then pressed the accelerator to come away with a comfortable 4&3 win and remain undefeated after the opening 3 rounds.

Great support again given by Ray Orr with his background and feedback of the course and of course Manager Lance Fredericks, both of whom made the long trek to Vincentia to support and lift the side.

The Team now sits atop the leader board with next week’s match to be played against Worrigee at ‘Royal Jamberoo’.

C Pennant

Jamberoo v St George’s Basin played at Jamberoo 17/2/2013

Jamberoo 5, St George’s Basin 0

The Ice Man Cometh

Congratulations to Ron Chilby who played his first Pennant game for the club today. Ron was off to the perfect start winning each of his first seven holes, all of which were won with pars or birdies. Ron went on to eventually win 7and 5 finally putting his opponent away on the 13th green. Who said pennant play was hard!! Well played Ron, may this be the first of many wins for the club.

Our other debutant, Arthur Bosanquet, was also off to a winning start, accounting for his opponent 3 and 1. When the pressure was put on, ‘Boz’ responded, making several clutch puts when it mattered. Again, the first of many wins for the club, I am sure.

Tim Young informs me that in fact he played B pennants for the club last year, so last week was his C Pennant debut.  He again played a ‘super’ round of golf, making several long putts early in his round causing his opponent to destabilize. Tim won, in an impressive performance, 6 and 4. Tim appears to be worth’ investing’ in for “player of the year’ at this stage.

Tom Zimmermann, never happy unless there is perfection in his game (sometimes called the ‘cougar’ spirit) was happy today. He played a near faultless game, hitting fairways, and then greens to obliterate his opponent 6 and 4. I certainly hoping to enrol in the special spa he goes to before each pennant season. It seems to work for Tom, at least. However, he won’t tell me if it is in Port Macquarie or Port Kembla. He just says, “Somewhere in Port”.

Peter Francis, following from his near hole in one at the 17th at Kiama last week, found our course to his liking and smashed his opponent 6 and 5. Peter again showed all the tenacity, consistency and resilience we expect of him. He recovered from a shank on the 7th to win a lop-sided game easily.

Next week we play our nemesis, Vincentia, at the Gerringong course in what should be a closely contested match. I can’t wait to see what surprise piece of captaincy our astute skipper, ‘The Hat’, will deliver next week. I am sure it will be worth waiting for!

WHITE HORSE CUP

Round 3 at Wollongong versus Bowral 1

It was always going to be a tough assignment.  Jamberoo had to give 22 shots to cup leader Bowral 1 on what proved to be an even harder course than normal, the round being played off the black plates which are normally reserved for the pros and Illawarra Pennants.

Little did we know that the Illawarra Pennant would play before us!

Steve Rippon (No.1) and Warren Joannou (No.5) were in the unenviable position of having to give their opponents 6 shots and everyone will know that this is a very tall order.  Warren fought back from being down dormie 6 to lose 4/2 on the 16th which was yet another hole where he had to give a shot.

Steve never really got into the game especially after the 9th where his ball trickled into the roughest rough in the country, couldn’t find it and conceded the hole only to find that it was marked as a hazard to then go 3 down eventually losing to a crafty bearded bloke called Frank 5/4. Bowral 2-0.

Wayne Griffiths played like a man possessed, never falling behind to have a great win 5/4.

Andrew Craddock at No. 3 showed true grit to be 2 down at one stage to win on the 16th  having given his opponent a shot on the hole, winning 3/2, great work for the longest hitter at Jamberoo. Bowral 2 Jamberoo 2.

So it came down to Tony McRae, our slim great white hope. Tony went 3 down with 4 to play and all hope appeared lost. But then he won 2 of the next 3 to be on a roll for a squared match on the last to give Jamberoo a point. Captain Carr returned to the clubhouse to advise the assembled crowd (well not really a crowd) who then waited with baited breath for the last pair. Jamberoo breathed sighs of relief when the Bowral man sliced his third shot into the water to then hit 5 to the back of the green. Tony was 15m from the green for 3. Silence reigned and the air could be cut with a knife. Normally reliable around the green Tony left his chip 3m short of the green, lying 4, still Jamberoo’s advantage. Tony putted to 2 feet, the Bowral man putted to 2 feet. Tony’s putt lipped out, Bowral’s putt was sunk – Jamberoo were sunk. Bowral 3 – Jamberoo 2. Captain Carr writhed in agony on the grass – thank goodness it’s only a game!

Jamberoo play Port Kembla next week at Sussex Inlet so here’s hoping

Jamberoo Pennant Teams clean sweep

JAMBEROO GOLF CLUB pennant teams had a great day Sunday with all three victorious.

B Pennant beat Shoalhaven Heads at Worrigee, C Pennant defeated Gerringong at Kiama and the White Horse Cuppers beat Wollongong at Jamberoo.

Match Reports:

B PENNANT – Round 2

The B Pennant team made it two out two with a 3.5 to 1.5 win against Shoalhaven Heads.

Adrian Bell 5&4 Win

Paul Hazeltine 6&5 Win

Tom Persson 1up Win

Jarryd Buckley Even

Matt Bell 2&1 Loss

Other results were –

Shellharbour Links beat Nowra 5 – 0

Worrigee beat Kiama 3 – 2

Vincentia had the Bye

Matt Bell – having his 1st hit out in the competition went down 2 and 1 after finding the slippery greens of Worrigee a tad tricky.

Jarryd Buckley – having his 1st hit out in the competition came away with a Draw, although a little wayward, Jarryd never gave in and fought hard to come away with an important .5 point.

Tom Persson – Struggled early on and soon found himself 2 down but never went away and finally Birdied the 15th and 18th to take the win 1 up.

Paul Hazeltine – Continued his great early season form with a resounding 6 and 5 win after mastering the slick putting surfaces and dropping a hole after an abnormally large Crow was seen taking flight with his ball mid round, Paul being the professional he is did not waver and refused to let the incident deflect from his goal of victory.

Adrian Bell – Was again at his commanding best with a great 5 and 4 victory. Being 4 up after 4 Adrian’s drive for victory was stalled on the 5th when again the giant Crow known by many names including ‘the Dark Knight’ but more commonly as ‘the beast of Worrigee’  removed a perfectly driven ball from the fairway. A lesser man may have faulted here but not our No.1 – he just continued his charge to victory.

Also a big thankyou to Ray Orr for making the journey down and providing great support to his Team mates and knowledge of the course which proved invaluable on the day and of course a much appreciated thankyou to Manager Lance Fredricks whose support and presence was an asset to all.

Next match will be played at Vincentia against Kiama with hit off at 8.40am.

Tom Persson

C PENNANT Round 1 v Gerringong at Kiama played on 10/2/13

The C Pennant is off and running with a very impressive win against the Gerringong Club, 4 matches to 1.

Wins were recorded by:

Tom Zimmerman 1 up;

Tim Young 3/2;

Chris Leckey 6/4;

Draws were recorded by Peter Francis and Dave Ransom.

Peter again showed his true grit squaring the last hole from amongst the trees.  A superb ‘up and down’ on 18 capping an excellent match for ‘BP’.

Tom, coming home early this year from his spa at Port, looked in trouble when he bunkered his approach at the last. Tom found some ‘cougar’ spirit and blasted out to one metre which secured a great victory.

Chris Leckey, the new skip of the team, led from the front with an excellent performance. No shot was impossible for ‘the hat’ today, even running some of them through the bunkers! A great debut Chris and well played mate.

Tim Young, making his pennant debut for the club, played a ‘Super’ match and won comfortably 3/2. Tim seemed to be rifling them down the middle of the fairways and swooped on any mistake his gallant opponent made. Well played Tim, I feel this might be the first of many wins.

Dave Ransom was extremely lucky to square his match, scoring a double bogey on the last after finding his ball buried in the mulga. Somehow his opponent 3 putted from 2 metres to gift away a win. Arthur ‘Boz’ Bosanquet, experiencing pennant play for the first as well, was superb as a caddy today and managed to get Dave home somehow. Arthur will be making his debut next week, so watch out!

It was also good to see Ron Chilby supporting the team, and we look forward to his debut next week as well.

Finally, the team wish to thank President Lance for his kind sponsorship of the match balls.

WHITE HORSE CUP

Inspired by the Yoda-like presence of new captain Mick Carr, the White Horse Cup squad had an impressive 3/2 win against Wollongong at home in what was their first outing of the year.

With a number of new faces in the squad this year, Captain Carr brought everyone together with a rousing pre-game address.

“Play the man not the course. If he f**ks up with the driver, take out a six-iron,” was the extent of the discourse.

Though not all of the team members had heard all those words before – particularly one of the words – the captain’s inspirational demeanour seemed to do the trick.

Carr led the way, winning his match 6/5, Warren Joannou won 5/4 and Brian O’Hare also had a 5/4 victory.

Tony McRae struck a Wollongong player having a red letter day, going down 6/4, while number one on the day Andrew Craddock had a hard fought match, eventually going down 2/1.

The team play Bowral at Wollongong next week and will strive to keep the winning form going.

The match report next week will come directly from Captain Carr.

“Tact and diplomacy, that’s what I major in,” he warned.
