JAMBEROO Golf Club Pennant teams had a mixed weekend. The C Pennant squad had the best result with a resounding 5 – 0 win at home, the B Pennant team squared their match against Kiama and now sit alone atop the competition table, while the White Horse Cuppers may prove to be a huge waste of performance enhancing substances after all and are in the naughty corner after a disappointing 3 – 2 loss. Jamberoo claws out a point…………
After 3 rounds of the B Pennants Jamberoo remain the only undefeated side after a shared 2.5 v 2.5 match with competition heavyweights Kiama.
Played at a tight and at times unforgiving Vincentia course the match was halved at the 18th with the final pairings.
Overall Results: Jamberoo 2.5 v Kiama 2.5, Worrigee 2.5 v Nowra 2.5, Vincentia 3.5 v The Links 1.5, Shoalhaven Heads BYE.
Player Results: Adrian Bell WIN 4&3, Jarryd Buckley WIN 2&1, Paul Hazeltine SQUARE, Tom Persson LOSS 2&1, Pete Munro LOSS 5&4.
Pete Munro put his best foot forward but was a little out of sink and was unable to haul in his opponent.
Tom Persson’s play was like hearing someone scrap their finger nails against a blackboard – painful.
Paul Hazeltine battled hard all day in a quality match halving the 18th in a tension packed finish to the day’s events, great effort.
Jarryd Buckley trailed early but finding the greens to his liking was able to steadily wear down his opponent and come away with a solid 2 up win, well done.
Adrian Bell found himself behind early but then pressed the accelerator to come away with a comfortable 4&3 win and remain undefeated after the opening 3 rounds.
Great support again given by Ray Orr with his background and feedback of the course and of course Manager Lance Fredericks, both of whom made the long trek to Vincentia to support and lift the side.
The Team now sits atop the leader board with next week’s match to be played against Worrigee at ‘Royal Jamberoo’.

The Ice Man Cometh
Congratulations to Ron Chilby who played his first Pennant game for the club today. Ron was off to the perfect start winning each of his first seven holes, all of which were won with pars or birdies. Ron went on to eventually win 7and 5 finally putting his opponent away on the 13th green. Who said pennant play was hard!! Well played Ron, may this be the first of many wins for the club.
Our other debutant, Arthur Bosanquet, was also off to a winning start, accounting for his opponent 3 and 1. When the pressure was put on, ‘Boz’ responded, making several clutch puts when it mattered. Again, the first of many wins for the club, I am sure.
Tim Young informs me that in fact he played B pennants for the club last year, so last week was his C Pennant debut. He again played a ‘super’ round of golf, making several long putts early in his round causing his opponent to destabilize. Tim won, in an impressive performance, 6 and 4. Tim appears to be worth’ investing’ in for “player of the year’ at this stage.
Tom Zimmermann, never happy unless there is perfection in his game (sometimes called the ‘cougar’ spirit) was happy today. He played a near faultless game, hitting fairways, and then greens to obliterate his opponent 6 and 4. I certainly hoping to enrol in the special spa he goes to before each pennant season. It seems to work for Tom, at least. However, he won’t tell me if it is in Port Macquarie or Port Kembla. He just says, “Somewhere in Port”.
Peter Francis, following from his near hole in one at the 17th at Kiama last week, found our course to his liking and smashed his opponent 6 and 5. Peter again showed all the tenacity, consistency and resilience we expect of him. He recovered from a shank on the 7th to win a lop-sided game easily.
Next week we play our nemesis, Vincentia, at the Gerringong course in what should be a closely contested match. I can’t wait to see what surprise piece of captaincy our astute skipper, ‘The Hat’, will deliver next week. I am sure it will be worth waiting for!

WHITE HORSE CUP
Round 3 at Wollongong versus Bowral 1
It was always going to be a tough assignment. Jamberoo had to give 22 shots to cup leader Bowral 1 on what proved to be an even harder course than normal, the round being played off the black plates which are normally reserved for the pros and Illawarra Pennants.
Little did we know that the Illawarra Pennant would play before us!
Steve Rippon (No.1) and Warren Joannou (No.5) were in the unenviable position of having to give their opponents 6 shots and everyone will know that this is a very tall order. Warren fought back from being down dormie 6 to lose 4/2 on the 16th which was yet another hole where he had to give a shot.
Steve never really got into the game especially after the 9th where his ball trickled into the roughest rough in the country, couldn’t find it and conceded the hole only to find that it was marked as a hazard to then go 3 down eventually losing to a crafty bearded bloke called Frank 5/4. Bowral 2-0.
Wayne Griffiths played like a man possessed, never falling behind to have a great win 5/4.
Andrew Craddock at No. 3 showed true grit to be 2 down at one stage to win on the 16th having given his opponent a shot on the hole, winning 3/2, great work for the longest hitter at Jamberoo. Bowral 2 Jamberoo 2.
So it came down to Tony McRae, our slim great white hope. Tony went 3 down with 4 to play and all hope appeared lost. But then he won 2 of the next 3 to be on a roll for a squared match on the last to give Jamberoo a point. Captain Carr returned to the clubhouse to advise the assembled crowd (well not really a crowd) who then waited with baited breath for the last pair. Jamberoo breathed sighs of relief when the Bowral man sliced his third shot into the water to then hit 5 to the back of the green. Tony was 15m from the green for 3. Silence reigned and the air could be cut with a knife. Normally reliable around the green Tony left his chip 3m short of the green, lying 4, still Jamberoo’s advantage. Tony putted to 2 feet, the Bowral man putted to 2 feet. Tony’s putt lipped out, Bowral’s putt was sunk – Jamberoo were sunk. Bowral 3 – Jamberoo 2. Captain Carr writhed in agony on the grass – thank goodness it’s only a game!
Jamberoo play Port Kembla next week at Sussex Inlet so here’s hoping
