Jamberoo’s 2014 Pennant campaign comes to a close

JGC LOGO 300NO pennant championship wins for Jamberoo teams this year unfortunately but all three squads can hold their heads high.

The B’s went out with a bang with a win at Wollongong on Sunday while the White Horse Cup team had the best result overall with a runner-up finish in their division. As previously reported, the C’s finished up last week.

B Pennants Results 16/3/14

Jamberoo won 3/2 vs Moss vale at Wollongong

Adrian Bell win 8/6

Tom Persson loss 2/1

Pete Munro win 3/2

Patrick Paris win 1 up

Ray Orr loss 8/6

THE B Pennant team won its last match of the season on a shortened 16 hole layout at Wollongong. Pete Munro was down early in his match and was struggling to find his game. He was one up with three to go when he found his ball plugged in a deep greenside bunker. Pete played a tremendous bunker shot to keep the ball on the green and then holed the 8 metre putt to win the hole. His Moss vale opponent, still jaded from Pete’s magician like up and down from the bunker, went on to three putt the next green and give Pete a decisive win.

Patrick Paris is well-known for his dogged determination in matches and once again he found himself trailing by two holes with five to play. Patrick drew on his extensive match play experience and won the next three holes with some superb putting. He closed out the match on the eighteenth with another tenacious win for the Jamberoo team.

The team finished on a high winning their last match against a formidable opponent in Moss vale. A big thank you goes to all team members for their excellent efforts during the season. The camaraderie amongst the team was second to none and the friendly sportsmanship spirit that the matches were played in were a credit to all team members.

Many thanks go to our Team manager Lance Fredericks for his support and advice throughout the Pennants season.

Dave Ransom 144White Horse Cup 2014 round 5 vs Shoalhaven Heads

THE last game of the year was a bit of a fizzer with Shoalhaven Heads unable to raise a team due to local commitments in their home town at the weekend. We were awarded a 6-0 victory and didn’t need to make the 7 am trek to Bowral. We were committed to play the last round match giving it our best shot and in Shoalhaven Head’s shoes, we would have found some other players, but that was their decision. Every match is important to us as we are representing our club even if it isn’t for the trophy.

Relying on Russell Vale, despite their horrible previous form, to find that something special against Sussex Inlet was indeed a pipe-dream and so it turned out. Only one of the RV players was able to deliver and ‘the Inlet’ won the match easily 5-1 to be deserved winners of our division.

Our team was left pondering the missed opportunity of the previous week where only a few centimetres of putt separated us from progressing to the semi-finals. Regardless, from adversity good things grow, and we are all stronger for the experience and hopefully up to the challenge next time.

It was a brilliant effort from the team throughout the season and a great effort to get so close with our new untried team. As captain I was proud to be associated with a great bunch of men who were proud to represent their club and to support their mates. They played each match fairly and passionately giving utmost respect to their opponent and the competition.

The team consisted of: Anthony Smith who was unbeatable at number 1 easily winning all 4 of his matches; Scott Hainsworth at number 2 who played brilliantly throughout the season winning 3 of 4 matches; Larry Kent at number 3 also played fantastic golf winning 3 of his 4 matches; Brian O’Hare playing number 4, won 2 of 3, usually giving his younger opponents a lesson on how to play handicap matchplay; Brad Jackson at number 5 had a fantastic season and won all 4 of his matches applying immense pressure to his opponents with his accurate approach shots; Steve Jackson at number 6 lost his first two matches in close tough struggles but his true class showed through when he smashed his Sussex Inlet opponent when it mattered; Shane Townsend playing number 4 or 5 achieved excellent results in his first pennant season for the club winning one, halving another and suffering one very close defeat; Dave Ransom, filling in at number 2, survived his only game winning it comfortably.

We were not considered to be a factor in pre-season thinking being a new team with a new captain and with poor form from previous years. To come so close was an achievement and everybody in the team should be proud. Don’t be concerned about what could have been; just reflect on the great mateship in the team, the joy of representing our proud little club and how close we came.

Well played and I hope to see you all in next year’s pennant teams.

Dave Ransom

Close-knit C Pennant Squad will be back

C Pennant Report: Round 5 Jamberoo V Moss Vale @ St Georges Basin

Chris Leckey Portrait 171The 2014 Season ends with a close loss 3/2.

Results this week:

Wins to Tom Zimmermann 4/3 (undefeated this year), Chris Leckey 4/2 and 2nd places to Arthur Bosanquet 2 down, Wayne Griffiths 3/2 and Tony McRae 4/2.

The Jamberoo “C Pennant” team, consisting of Tom Zimmermann, Peter Francis, Arthur Bosanquet, Ron Chilby, Wayne Griffiths, Tony McRae and Chris Leckey have spent their Sundays during February and March competing against Illawarra’s finest. The club should be proud of the way the team competed in what turned out to be one of the strongest events in recent years.

Each player performed strongly and portrayed Jamberoo as a great close knit team who played to win but also to enjoy the sportsmanship and competition.

We will be back next year.

Chris Leckey

White Horse Cuppers suffer narrow defeat – still have outside 2014 finals chance

JGC LOGO 300THE Jamberoo White Horse Cup squad were hugely disappointed after a hard-fought narrow defeat by joint competition leaders Sussex Inlet on Sunday.

The Cuppers went down 2.5 to 3.5 at Nowra with a couple of critical matches going down to final putts on the 18th green. The Cuppers still have a slim chance of making the semi-finals but will be relying on other results.

Jamberoo V Sussex Inlet at Nowra 9/3/14

Jamberoo loss 3.5/2.5

Steve Jackson won 8/6

Shane Townsend all square

Brian O’Hare lost 1 down

Brad Jackson won 1 up

Larry Kent lost 2/1

Scott Hainsworth lost 4/3

Steve Jackson was a standout with his 8/6 win. As the team No.6, Steve teed off first and a superb drive right down the middle set the standard for his day. Steve has been in great form of late, coming second with 39 stableford points at Shoalhaven Heads in their Thursday comp last week.

Shane was playing the Sussex captain, a golfer who hasn’t lost a pennants match for two years. Shane was very happy with his game after fighting back from a couple down on the front nine to snatch a critical draw on the last.

Brian was a little nonplussed at first to be match against a regular sized adult rather than one of the over two metre teenagers he has become accustomed to this series. Brian was 2 up early but was involved with a closely fought see-sawing match with a much longer hitting 14 marker. It all came down to the final green where Brian needed to sink a six footer to win the hole and draw his match. Brian is currently undergoing counselling.

Brad Jackson was another involved in a closely fought battle, coming back from a couple down at various stages of his match to win 1 up on the 18th green. The Jackson “twins” certainly earned their keep on the day.

Larry Kent was his usual tenacious self but struck an 11 marker in good form while a “gutted” Scott couldn’t get over a 6 handicapper he said was “playing like a machine”.

The squad should all be at least satisfied with the effort they put in with what was always going to be a very tough match. Squad member Anthony Smith should also be lauded for his valuable support on the day, as should the thoughts of absent captain Dave Ransom.

The WHC team still have an outside chance of making the semi-finals and are still equal with the now outright competition leaders Sussex in the number of individual matches won. That would be important should there be a count-back.

All Jamberoo need now is a huge form reversal that would see last placed Russell Vale beating Sussex in the last regular season match at Gibraltar Country Club in Bowral next week.  Jamberoo would also have to at least tie their match with Shoalhaven Heads

When the results became clear at Nowra on Sunday, Russell Vale team members were resisting all offers of performance enhancing drug sponsorship, but at least they know there are people willing to do them actual physical harm if they don’t do their best in the Southern Highlands next week. Prayer could also be an option.

Pennant Results 2/3/14

JGC LOGO 300JAMBEROO’S B Pennant squad fought out a dogged draw against the Links Shell Cove at a soggy Moss Vale on Sunday while the C’s went down to St Georges Basin at Vincentia.

The White Horse Cup squad, joint competition leaders, had a well-earned rest ahead of their important match against arch rival Sussex Inlet at Nowra next Sunday.

Individual reports:

B Pennants Report: Jamberoo vs Links Shell Cove II at Moss Vale

Match Drawn 2.5/2.5

Tom Persson loss 4/3

Paul Hazeltine win 5/3

Pete Munro loss 2/1

Patrick Paris win 1 up

Jaryd Buckley all-square

THE team had a draw against Links Shell Cove II at Moss Vale in damp soggy conditions. Paul Hazeltine continued his winning streak with another convincing win. Paul played some excellent golf and his match was never in doubt.

Patrick Paris was 2 down after six holes but he showed that ‘Jamberoo fighting spirit’ to wear down his opponent on the back nine. Patrick came out on top after 18th holes, finishing 1 up over his opponent.

Jarryd “Bubba” Buckley had a see-sawing match against his opponent. They finished all-square and Jarryd gained a valuable point for the team with his drawn match. Tom Persson played some excellent golf but unfortunately came up against an in form golfer. Pete Munro had another tight match, narrowly going down on the 17th hole. Many thanks go to Lance Fredericks, Ray Orr and Steve Rippon for travelling to Moss Vale and supporting the team on the day.

The B pennants will be hosted by Jamberoo next week and it will be a bye for the Jamberoo team.

C Pennant Report: Round 4 Jamberoo V St Georges Basin @ Vincentia

Chris Leckey Portrait 171The Superoos go down 3.5/1.5

IT’S certainly been a hard season for the “Cs” this year with all of our opponents fielding strong sides. All of the games today had lead changes during the matches but we fell away in the last few holes.

Tom Zimmermann  (aka Cougar, Rock) Playing no.1, stays undefeated with a squared match. The odds were against Tom on the last hole after landing off the green, but Tom held on to halve the hole.

Peter Francis produced another courageous effort and was right in the game until his opponent strung a few winning holes together after the turn, eventually going down 5/3

After waiting 4 weeks to get a game, the ever reliable Wayne Griffiths showed us

Wayne Griffiths .... "The old fella has still got it!"
Wayne Griffiths …. “The old fella has still got it!”

how to win as he holed a12 footer on the last hole to take the match 1 up. The old fella has still got it!

Chris Leckey was up against the Basins captain and was cruising @ 2 up through 8 holes but a lapse in concentration at the top end of the course saw him go down 4/3.

Tony McRae lost a close match “billed the battle of the lefties” 3/2. After being behind early Tony clawed back to be 1 up, but his opponent had his eye on the prize and finished the game off well to take the match.

The boys are looking forward to our game against Moss Vale @ St Georges Basin next weekend, where we will play this season’s last match.

Until then,

Chris Leckey

White Horse Cuppers have big home win

White Horse Cup Team 560 2

THE Jamberoo White Horse Cup team had a convincing victory at home on the weekend to remain on top of their competition ladder.

The Cuppers defeated Gibraltar Golf Club 6 – 0 with some decisive individual performances. Jamberoo is on equal competition points with arch rival Sussex Inlet but is a shade in front due to winning more individual matches in the three rounds completed so far.

Meanwhile, the other two Pennant squads didn’t fare so well this week with B Pennant losing 2/3 at Shell Cove and C Pennant going down 1/4 in a tough ask against Port Kembla at Port Kembla.

Individual Reports:

White Horse Cup Round 3 vs Gibraltar Golf Club at Jamberoo

Dave Ransom 144

Jamberoo defeated Gibraltar 6-0

Anthony Smith won 7/6

Dave Ransom won 3/2

Larry Kent won 4/3

Brian O’Hare won 7/6

Brad Jackson won 5/3

Shane Townsend won 5/4

A great performance by all of the players saw the Jamberoo WHC team complete a whitewash on the men from Gibraltar Golf Club.

Anthony continued his superb form easily accounting for his opponent on the 12th green.

Larry was only 2 up at the turn but really turned on the pressure on the back nine to win on the 15th.

Brian, fresh from a week of motivation watching the lady pros in Melbourne, was drawn to play another two metre tall 16 year old. Brian again proved experience often beats youth  and won on the 12th green.

Brad also continued to play excellent golf winning his match with ease.

Shane recorded his first win for Jamberoo in a very encouraging performance, winning on the 14th green.

Thanks to Steve Jackson and Scott Hainsworth for their cooking prowess and support of the team on the course and also to Steve Rippon who acted as caddie for Dave. Steve is still shaking his head at the horrible putting performance that he witnessed.

The team is off to a good start but the hard games are in front of us and we will need to maintain our good form if we are to progress.

There is a bye next week in the WHC with our next game scheduled for Nowra against the other undefeated team in the division, Sussex Inlet, on the 9th of March.

Round 3 Jamberoo V Port Kembla @ Port Kembla

Chris Leckey Portrait 171A difficult task was proven to be!

After the two week  break the “Cs” were keen to play, and in perfect conditions we were beaten 4/1 by a strong home side.

Tom Zimmermann continues his great form by beating their #1in a close match taking our only win 2 up. Tom’s class showed as he stayed solid when the pressure was on over the last 2 holes under the watchful eyes of both teams.

Ron Chilby played Port’s captain and held on until the 15th (a difficult par 3 )  to go down 4/3.

Arthur Bosanquet was up against an old Jamberoo Pennant player in Ken Baker and was 6 down after 8 holes. Following a mid round pep talk from Tony, Arthur put on another late charge to just go down 2/1.

Peter Francis had concerns about being in too many bunkers today but only landed in two, the problem was his opponent had a great round going and didn’t let Peter into the match, finishing on the 15th 4/3.

Chris Leckey was chasing the lead all day and held on till the 15th going down 5/3.

The team was well supported by team motivator Tony McRae and Cameraman Wayne Griffiths who will be in action next weekend @ Vincentia.

This year’s pennant may be out of reach with this loss but the team still has the will to win, so let’s see if we can win the following matches.

Chris Leckey

C Pennant team members (L-R) Peter Francis, Tony McRae, Chris Leckey (C), Rock Hudson, Ron Chilby and Arthur Bosanquet.

B Pennant Vs Shoalhaven Heads at Links Shell Cove

B Pennant team lost 2/3 at Shell Cove on Sunday.

A.Bell lost 1 down

T.Persson won 4/3

P.Hazeltine won 6/5

P.Munro lost 2/1

M.Bell lost 2/1

Match report:

Jamberoo B pennant team had another very close finish losing three matches to two against Shoalhaven Heads at the Links Shell Cove.

Paul Hazeltine holed several birdies on the front nine and was back in the club house early again. He wasted no time in putting his opponent away with a convincing six and five win.

Tom Persson had to shake off a determined opponent who holed several huge putts and a hit miraculous shot from the hazard on the 4th hole and then holed the putt for a birdie. Tom kept the pressure on and ran away with the match on the back nine.

Matt Bell felt he was playing solid golf but found himself three down after five. His opponent came out of the blocks quickly with a series of pars. Matt made a comeback mid-way through the round but went down two and one to an opponent playing “hot” golf on the day.

Next week the team takes on Links Shell Cove II at Moss vale.
