Jamberoo’s 2014 Pennant campaign comes to a close

JGC LOGO 300NO pennant championship wins for Jamberoo teams this year unfortunately but all three squads can hold their heads high.

The B’s went out with a bang with a win at Wollongong on Sunday while the White Horse Cup team had the best result overall with a runner-up finish in their division. As previously reported, the C’s finished up last week.

B Pennants Results 16/3/14

Jamberoo won 3/2 vs Moss vale at Wollongong

Adrian Bell win 8/6

Tom Persson loss 2/1

Pete Munro win 3/2

Patrick Paris win 1 up

Ray Orr loss 8/6

THE B Pennant team won its last match of the season on a shortened 16 hole layout at Wollongong. Pete Munro was down early in his match and was struggling to find his game. He was one up with three to go when he found his ball plugged in a deep greenside bunker. Pete played a tremendous bunker shot to keep the ball on the green and then holed the 8 metre putt to win the hole. His Moss vale opponent, still jaded from Pete’s magician like up and down from the bunker, went on to three putt the next green and give Pete a decisive win.

Patrick Paris is well-known for his dogged determination in matches and once again he found himself trailing by two holes with five to play. Patrick drew on his extensive match play experience and won the next three holes with some superb putting. He closed out the match on the eighteenth with another tenacious win for the Jamberoo team.

The team finished on a high winning their last match against a formidable opponent in Moss vale. A big thank you goes to all team members for their excellent efforts during the season. The camaraderie amongst the team was second to none and the friendly sportsmanship spirit that the matches were played in were a credit to all team members.

Many thanks go to our Team manager Lance Fredericks for his support and advice throughout the Pennants season.

Dave Ransom 144White Horse Cup 2014 round 5 vs Shoalhaven Heads

THE last game of the year was a bit of a fizzer with Shoalhaven Heads unable to raise a team due to local commitments in their home town at the weekend. We were awarded a 6-0 victory and didn’t need to make the 7 am trek to Bowral. We were committed to play the last round match giving it our best shot and in Shoalhaven Head’s shoes, we would have found some other players, but that was their decision. Every match is important to us as we are representing our club even if it isn’t for the trophy.

Relying on Russell Vale, despite their horrible previous form, to find that something special against Sussex Inlet was indeed a pipe-dream and so it turned out. Only one of the RV players was able to deliver and ‘the Inlet’ won the match easily 5-1 to be deserved winners of our division.

Our team was left pondering the missed opportunity of the previous week where only a few centimetres of putt separated us from progressing to the semi-finals. Regardless, from adversity good things grow, and we are all stronger for the experience and hopefully up to the challenge next time.

It was a brilliant effort from the team throughout the season and a great effort to get so close with our new untried team. As captain I was proud to be associated with a great bunch of men who were proud to represent their club and to support their mates. They played each match fairly and passionately giving utmost respect to their opponent and the competition.

The team consisted of: Anthony Smith who was unbeatable at number 1 easily winning all 4 of his matches; Scott Hainsworth at number 2 who played brilliantly throughout the season winning 3 of 4 matches; Larry Kent at number 3 also played fantastic golf winning 3 of his 4 matches; Brian O’Hare playing number 4, won 2 of 3, usually giving his younger opponents a lesson on how to play handicap matchplay; Brad Jackson at number 5 had a fantastic season and won all 4 of his matches applying immense pressure to his opponents with his accurate approach shots; Steve Jackson at number 6 lost his first two matches in close tough struggles but his true class showed through when he smashed his Sussex Inlet opponent when it mattered; Shane Townsend playing number 4 or 5 achieved excellent results in his first pennant season for the club winning one, halving another and suffering one very close defeat; Dave Ransom, filling in at number 2, survived his only game winning it comfortably.

We were not considered to be a factor in pre-season thinking being a new team with a new captain and with poor form from previous years. To come so close was an achievement and everybody in the team should be proud. Don’t be concerned about what could have been; just reflect on the great mateship in the team, the joy of representing our proud little club and how close we came.

Well played and I hope to see you all in next year’s pennant teams.

Dave Ransom
