Jamberoo White Horse Cup Squad take division lead

JGC LOGO 300White Horse Cup Round 2 v Nowra at Shoalhaven Heads

Jamberoo 4 defeat Nowra 2

Anthony Smith won 6/5

Scott Hainsworth won 7/5

Larry Kent won 6/5

Brad Jackson won 3/2

Shane Townsend lost 3/2

Steve Jackson lost 2 down

A GREAT performance from our top 4 saw Jamberoo overcome Nowra in a comprehensive victory to take the leadership of our division.

Anthony played inspired golf, displaying his excellent short game to good effect, to win easily on the 13th.

Scott, claiming to be nervous for the first couple of holes, still won these holes and turned 5 up. His opponent chipped in three times but this was not enough to put any pressure on Scott. Scotty’s silky smooth putting stroke responded when needed and he also won on the 13th green.

Larry was coasting along and playing excellent golf when his opponent called a rule on him on the 9th. This fired Larry up and he blasted his opponent away after the turn to also win on the 13th green.

Brad, in the critical 4th spot, was playing a very closely contested match. After turning all square ‘Action Jackson’ lifted and was able to win on the 16th green in another great performance.

Steve and Shane, fresh from their first and second placings in the previous day’s competition, continued with their excellent form and both were all square at the turn. Unfortunately their opponents were also playing well and both lost close matches.

A good win by the Super Roos, despite the absence of Brian who decided that being up front and personal while taking pictures of Paula Creamer at the Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne was more rewarding than playing golf with his mates. It was suggested that he might try some film in his camera next year.

Our next game is at home on the 23rd of February against Gibraltar commencing at 9am

2014 JGC Pennant teams off to impressive start

JGC LOGO 300JAMBEROO GOLF CLUB’S 2014 Pennant teams are off to a booming start with the B Pennant defending champions defeating Wollongong at the Grange, the White Horse Cup squad having a resounding victory over Russell Vale at Russell Vale and C Pennants drawing a hard fought match against Vincentia at Royal Jamberoo.

Individual match reports below filed by the respective team captains/representatives:

B Pennant Round 1 v Wollongong at the Grange

Jamberoo defeated Wollongong 3.5/1.5

Individual results:

Adrian Bell won 5/3

Paul Hazeltine lost 2 down

Pete Munro won 3/2

Patrick Paris won 1 up

Matt Bell all square

Match report:

The B pennant team made an excellent start to the year with a solid win over Wollongong.

It was a “nail biting” finish with three of the matches being decided on the 18th hole.

The highlight of the day was Pete Munro’s eagle on the par 4 11th hole. Pete hit a “booming” drive down the middle and then put a full wedge straight into the hole. Pete was always in command of his match, going to an early lead and then was never headed from that point.

Patrick Paris had to draw on his extensive match play experience as he was 2 down with 4 to play.  He got the match back to all-square after 17 and then went on to win the 18th hole to record an important 1up win for the team.

Matt Bell found himself 4 down after 9 holes but showed grit and determination to get an all-square result after 18.

Paul Hazeltine found himself up against a crafty left-hander and was narrowly defeated on the 18th hole. Paul is bound to bounce back next week with a big win at the heads.

The team is looking forward to getting it’s “gun” player Tom Persson back next week for the important match against Port Kembla.

A big thank you to Lance Fredericks, Ray Orr and Jaryd Buckley for their support and assistance on the day.

C Pennant Report

Round 1 Jamberoo v Vincentia @ Jamberoo Golf Club

Jamberoo 2.5, Vincentia 2.5

The C Pennant team, looking resplendent in their new Superoo inspired coloured shirts and caps hosted the strong Vincentia team today. The team members are Ron Chilby, Tom Zimmermann, Peter Francis, Arthur Bosanquet, Wayne Griffiths, Chris Leckey and Tony McRae.

Arthur Bosanquet and Chris Leckey had wins, Peter Francis squared his game and 2nd places to Ron Chilby and Tony McRae.

Ron Chilby was No1 this week and was all square on the 18th tee with his opponent nicknamed “The Keg”…. a strong man, who’s drive landed only a sand iron from the green and won the hole to take that match 1 up.

Arthur Bosanquet … deserves a round of applause for his feats on the day. After being 3 down on the 8th hole, he came back to be 1 down on the 15th where a few of us had gathered to watch proceedings. We saw him eagle the 16th to go square, then win the 17th and 18th … chipping in for a birdie there to win 2 up. A true grandstand finish.

Peter Francis had another great finish and basically saved our skins after being dormie down with 3 holes to go, he won the last 3 holes to square the match … how good is that. Well done Peter.

Chris Leckey managed to keep the driver working today and sunk a few telling putts to win 4/2

Tony McRae had a near impossible task to win against a seasoned Vincentia player who was playing well under his handicap, he carded 1 over for the 1st  9  holes, and even with Tony playing good golf  his opponent took the match 4/3. His opponent has had blinders every time he plays at Jamberoo … next time Tony.

Our next game will be in a fortnight when we will challenge Port Kembla on their home turf.

I would like to thank Stuart Potter, Chris and Gail Goodwin, and Bruce Hammond for their work behind the scene on the day. Wayne and Tom for your encouragement and thanks to Drummond Golf Warrawong for supplying the balls.

Cheers

Chris Leckey

White Horse Cup Round 1 v Russell Vale at Russell Vale

Jamberoo 5 def Russell Vale 1

Individual results:

Anthony Smith won 4/2

Scott Hainsworth won 2 up

Larry Kent won 2 up

Brian O’Hare won 4/3

Brad Jackson won 1 up

Steve Jackson lost 2/1

Match Report

A great start to the season and we should feel very satisfied with the performance with all players playing well against the home team.

Anthony, playing his first representative match for Jamberoo, was able to defeat his Greg Norman look-a-like easily. Anthony impressed onlookers with his accurate iron play and consistent putting and looks like a force to be reckoned with in this comp.

Scott was up against a wily old fellow who was playing the mental game as well as the golf game. The Russell Vale veteran picked the wrong player to try and upset as Scott weathered all the hijinks and answered in kind with his clubs in a solid performance.

Larry was in trouble early, falling behind 3 holes. Calling on all his matchplay experience, Larry found his form with the putter and rebounded to win in a strong performance.

Brian made a salient point when considering the relative experience of his opponent and himself in his match. Both had been playing golf for 10 years even though Brian admits to being 60 and his opponent 16 years old [Edit note: a 6 foot 3 inch 16 year old off an 11 handicap]. Brian incidentally gave his young opponent a lesson winning his match easily in a very nice ball striking performance.

Brad was tested all the way in his match and was able to play some excellent pressure golf to have his opponent dormie 4. With victory tantalizingly close Brad’s opponent lifted and really applied the pressure. Brad was able to hang on to win on the last green in an important victory for the team.

Steve played a see-sawing battle against a tenacious opponent and looked in shape to win his match several times but could not land that killer blow and succumbed on the penultimate hole.

Thanks to Shane Townsend who spent his first pennant day learning the ropes as a caddy for Anthony. Next match we will unleash Shane against an unsuspecting Nowra opponent.

Week two sees no golf in the WHC with our next game against Nowra at Shoalhaven Heads on February 16.

Final White Horse Cup match for 2013

WHITE HORSE CUP – Round 9

At Moss Vale v Shellcove Links

By Team Captain Michael Carr

THE Grange won the wooden spoon after a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Port Kembla who qualified for the final edging out Sussex Inlet.

Jamberoo’s performance left something to be desired going down to a ruthless Shell Cove Links team 3.5-1.5. This defeat requiring a mea culpa from the skipper for giving the team the wrong starting time of 7-30 instead of the correct time of 9-00am.

Notwithstanding the stuff up of the hit off time the team’s performance bordered on the abysmal with Rip [ Steve Rippon] going down 5/4, Mr Reliable Griffo [Wayne Griffiths] going down with the same score and Andrew “Crash” Craddock walking off the course with his tail between his legs having received a trouncing of 4/3. The Big Fella who hits the ball further than most people go on holidays should have left all his clubs bigger than a 6 iron at home and may have avoiding the lumberjacking required if you stray from the fairway on this course!

Tony McRae finally broke his drought to have a good win 3/2 having given his opponent 4 shots.

Skipper Carr was 4 down with 5 to play and looked like having an early shower, but somehow managed to avoid the trees on the last five holes to square the match for the second time running at the 18th.

A long season but Jamberoo finished mid field and hopefully will build into match winners next year.

White Horse Cuppers have Shellharbour win

Report by team captain Mick Carr

WHITE HORSE CUP

Round 8 v Russell Vale at Links Shellcove

JAMBEROO avoided the wooden spoon at the Links Shell Cove on Sunday 24 March when we defeated game opponents Russell Vale 3-2.

In searing heat and humidity Mr Rippon went down 3/2 after starting badly when an unsighted crow stole his ball on the first hole followed by his much younger opponent having a propensity for sinking 20 foot putts for birdies on the par threes.  But he struggled on to get back into the game only to falter on the 16th to go back to the clubhouse. The consensus being if you push a 40kg bag and buggy round this course you are bound to lose!

Mr O’Hare appeared to be cruising to victory but the terrain and heat got the better of him walking off 2 down at the 17th – good effort really.

“Mr Reliable” Griffo came storming back into favour to qualify for the last round at Moss Vale by winning well 4/3.

Warren Joannou beat his opponent with no shots given or taken winning 3/2.

The “Big Fella” or “Crash” Craddock whooped his opponent 5/4 after demoralising the Willie Nelson lookalike Vic who had to give Andrew 7 shots on this monster of a course.

First place in the division is up for grabs with the favourites Sussex Inlet going down to Wollongong so it’s down to the wire at Moss Vale the week after Easter.

Congrats to Jamberoo’s B Pennant side for their win – got one at last.

Report by team captain Tom Persson

JAMBEROO has won the Illawarra B Pennants Golf title for 2013 with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Moss Vale.

Playing at a well presented Wollongong layout the Jamberoo side proved the stronger on the day.

Results –

Pete Munro Halved

Jarryd Buckley 2&1 WIN

Tom Persson 4&3 WIN

Paul Hazeltine 3&2 WIN

Adrian Bell Halved

Pete Munro

Came up against the Moss Vale Captain(Greg Canham) in a see sawing encounter which saw Pete 2 down late in the match but Pete never gave in and fought back to square the opening match – great effort.

Jarryd Buckley

Played (John Aughton) and got off to a flying start and was 4 up after 4 holes but typical of any Grand Final the Moss Vale player never gave in before being overcome by Jarryd 2&1 in a quality match – great effort.

Tom Persson

Played (Peter Richards) and played some solid pressure golf to come away with a 4&3 win.

Paul Hazeltine

Played (David Webb – unbeaten in several years in Pennants), in a tight, quality match Paul again proved why he is such a dominant Pennants player by dismantling “Webbies” game with his monstrous drives and radar like control of his irons to run away with the match 3&2 – great effort.

Adrian Bell

Played (Ross Hosking) and in a very close encounter squared the match on the 18th, it must be said however that Adrian played some super golf and was able to force the pace but just needed some shortish to mid range putts to drop on these lightning fast greens – great effort.

Again thanks to the support of Ray Orr who unfortunately could not be there on the day but provided the side with his nutritious energy bars and inspirational words. Also a big thankyou to our Manager Lance Fredericks and player Matt Bell for their assistance on the day and to Mick Harris and (Kim) for coming out and giving support. To those members who wished the side well (a big thankyou)

Really proud of the guys and couldn’t have asked for any better commitment throughout the season and the guys got their reward today by capturing Jamberoo’s 1st ever Mens Pennants Title and remained undefeated – well done to you all.

Cheers,

Tom

(p.s. guys no more B Pennants next Sunday – enjoy)
