Champagne Golf  5 – 9 hole comp.

Champagne Golf – What is it?

It is the beginning of a regular Thursday afternoon 5 – 9 hole event (5 – 7 pm). Played like a Kingsford Nine players will build cards to gain a handicap.

The ‘Get into Golf’ clinic players (+ friends) gain experience of the whole game of golf, from teeing off to putting in. It includes two hours out on the course allowing everyone to get close and personal with nature. Added to that, is an undefined amount of time on the deck (whilst sipping Champagne/soft drink) discussing best shots, trials of the water hazards, and general rules of the game.

Players only have to text message Kim Oborn (0427 167 617) or ring the Pro-shop (02 42 360 404) to register their interest each week for a low pressure, light-hearted, fun experience.

RESULTS:      16 players presented this week, willing to hone their skills.

Vale Jim Butt

It is with sorrowful tidings that I inform the members of Jamberoo Golf Club that long serving professional Jim Butt passed away last night. He was well cared for in his last days and suffered no pain.

Jim had led an interesting life as a professional golfer from his early years in Canberra to his last years at Jamberoo and Shoalhaven Heads. Always full of stories he was very well respected by all who knew him and a pleasure to converse with. He will be sadly missed by the many thousands he has helped over the years with his sage advice on the intricacies of the golf swing.

I personally feel privileged to have known him and will miss his enlightening lessons, encouraging words, friendly advice, and smile.

He will be sadly missed.

Our heart-felt sympathies go out to Leonie and family.

Vale.

News from the Course

Thursday Champagne Golf

An exciting new competition is set to start this Thursday afternoon from 5 pm for all of our new players who have yet to get a handicap. It is an ideal way to mix with fellow new members, and some old heads as well, and learn the game and its funny quirks!

Hope to see you there.

Programme Booklets

From our inception in 1981 we have printed a programme booklet with all the events planned to be played and all playing conditions highlighted.

Unfortunately the cost of each booklet has multiplied out of sight and the club last year spent about $1500 on its publication. What’s more of the 300 printed only 200 were taken by members.

This is a cost that we can do without especially as the majority of members have access to a computer or smart phone. The programme can be found on our web page under the Golf tab/ programme of events,

http://jamberoogolf.com.au/programme/

For those without technology multiple copies have been posted on our noticeboards.

Sunday Mixed

Position Vacant: Somebody or a couple keen to play a mixed fourball event on the last Sunday of the month and prepared to assist in its running. All assistance provided.

Each year we are all keen to run a Sunday Mixed competition but things get in the way and it fails to materialise. Last year we actually got a round or two in before the year was rudely affected by Covid.

If you are keen then please contact Dave Ransom on 0404 936 504 and we will work together in getting the competition up and running in 2022.

Mens Monthly Medal Matters

On Medal days we run various extra competitions as well as the Monthly Medal.

The nett winner of each grade qualifies for the Gold Medal day in November, and the player with the least number of putts becomes the monthly putting winner and qualifies for the Golden Putter playoff also in November.

There was a putting winner last Saturday which we missed writing down and the result page will be amended tomorrow with the winners name.

Apart from the monthly medalists a gross winner is also awarded a prize in each grade and if numbers permit a runner up nett is also awarded in each grade. You can only win one of these prizes.

There is an actual monthly medal for each grade. Please ask the starter or the Office to collect your medal.

Last Saturday saw the introduction of the new grade cutoffs and the size of each grade was much more even.

A grade is for players with handicaps 15 or less, B Grade is for players with handicaps 16 -21 and C Grade is for players with handicaps greater than 22. The card box now reflects these grades.

Mud-ball Rule

A lot of rain about always means that mud will adhere to your ball. If you are on a fairway our local rule at Jamberoo is that you can lift, clean and exactly replace your ball in these circumstances.

This will apply until further notice.

News from the Course – January 7

It must be medal day. I can tell because it has rained heavily and we have recorded over an inch of rain Friday morning at the course.

The course remains open for play but it will be walking only Friday,Saturday and Sunday

No carts.

Covid-19 Reminders

In response to the evolving COVID-19 outbreak, the following rules are being reintroduced:

  • Mask wearing is required in all indoor settings including in the Golf Shop and is recommended in outdoor areas around the clubhouse and in the carpark
  • Maintain your 1.5m social distance from other players at all times
  • COVID-Safe check-ins will be required by all players
  • You should remain seated while eating and drinking at the club
  • Make sure you stay safe by getting your booster shot.
  • If you’re aged 18 or over and it’s been 4 months since your second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, you can now get a booster vaccination. This will help strengthen your immune system and help protect you and your loved ones against COVID-19.

Jamberoo Players hit the Heights

Club Champion Ben McEvoy late December played a round at the long and difficult Hilltop course at Mollymook and recorded a 3 under par round 69 off he stick to win the days competition with 42 points. Ben is hitting the ball very nicely and has dropped his handicap down to 1.

Meanwhile at Jamberoo this week Jeff Wasson has found a purple patch of form scoring 45 points on Monday and following it up with 42 on Wednesday to take out the Drummond Golf Stableford. His handicap has taken a beating as well with a three shot bonus lowering from Golf Australia in recognition of his good form. Well played Jeff.

Gary Brickell thought he had 1st place sown up last Saturday with an excellent 43 points. Bernie McGlinchey had other thoughts and beat Gary with his own 43 points and having a better back nine. Well played both of you.

Anthony Smith is obviously finding the centre of his clubs at the moment. In his last couple of weeks he has shot superb rounds of 44 points off his 7 handicap, and followed it up with 36 points off his new 5 handicap. In form for the Pennants.

Drummond Golf Stableford

If you play well enough to win the Drummond Golf Stableford then part of the prize is a $50 Drummond Golf voucher to be spent at Drummond Golf Shellharbour.

Ask at the Office to collect your voucher.

Eagles Nest Emptied

A great shot to 60 cm of the flag by Lex Hodgson last Saturday saw him become the first Eagles Nest winner. He won a dozen balls.

The eagles nest starts again this Saturday with 3 balls at a distance of 15 cm.

Pennants Update

The GolfNSW (Illawarra) Pennant season commences on January 30. Teams have been selected and club playing shirts have been ordered and we are awaiting delivery.

A Pennant shirt Presentation will be held before the season after the shirts arrive.

We have four teams entered this year under the captaincy of Ryan Dorahy (B Pennant – handicaps larger than 5.5), Larry Kent (C Pennant – handicaps larger than 12.5), Col Booth ( White Horse Cup 1 – handicap matchplay – handicaps less than 24) and Phil Gosling ( White Horse Cup 2).

All teams have both experience and enthusiasm on their side and should acquit themselves well and represent the club with pride.

Good luck to all of our teams.

That tree on the 12th

Happy New Year

The Staff and Board of Jamberoo Golf Club wish all members and their families and friends a most welcome and happy New Year. We all look forward to your company in 2022.

Stay safe and play well.

2021 certainly posed its challenges but one thing we all gained out of the year was the knowledge of the strength and determination of our members to get through the lockdowns and pull together as a club. We welcomed many new members and we sincerely hope you will all enjoy many years in our company.

We have a great course and great valued membership and a whole bunch of great people.

2022 is looking brighter for all.

Twins?

John and little George

Thanks to John Ellsmore and our many garden volunteers for their time and efforts in maintaining the beautiful gardens at the course. An excellent job done by a dedicated bunch of members who want to give our course that special something. Something that is part of them.

If you would like to help then I am sure John and the others would like to have you on their team.

Contact John himself or just leave your name and phone number with the Office or Golf Shop.

Eagles Nest

Talking about John, apparently he was very excited on Wednesday when he hit a shot on the third to 6cm. He thought he had won the Eagles Nest Jackpot!

Unfortunately that Jackpot is only available on a Saturday.

Sorry John.

Still if you can get one that close then maybe you can do it again?
