B Pennant team win a close one against Russell Vale

Report by Lance Fredericks

The Jamberoo B Pennant team had a 4/3 win over Russell Vale at Port Kembla on Sunday 20 February.

The match started in scratchy fashion for some and better for others. Two early finishes at the 13th hole resulted in a win and a loss with Pete Munro losing 7/5 and Tom Persson winning 6/5. This set the scene for exciting finishes as we knew that Jarryd Buckley was down, Matt Bell down, Adrian Bell 1 up, Jaryd Byers square and Tim Young 2 up.

As the last two matches left the 15th, we had two wins and three losses with Adrian Bell dormie 3 and Jaryd Byers square.

The spectator group waited by the 17th green for the final result. We saw Adrian and his opponent playing up the 17th and thought he has lost the 16th; can’t he just square this hole?

On arrival at the green Adrian said he had won 3/2 but they both had never played this hole so that’s what they decided to do.

We then waited for Jaryd. If he squares his match then it will be 3 ½ each – another drawn match.

We found to our joy and rapture that he was now 1 up and only had to square the 18th to win his and our match. This he did with, in his words, ‘my best drive and best putt of the whole match’.

In front of the gallery he putted from just off the front of the green, over the dead elephant to within inches of the hole.

Individual results were: Tom Persson 6/5, Jaryd Byers 1up Adrian Bell 3/2 and Tim Young 2up the winners and the three losing matches were: Pete Munro 7/5, Jarryd Buckley 6/4 and Matt Bell 3/1.

Congratulations to all the Team.

Next week’s match is against St Georges Basin at Wollongong.

C Pennant wins “The Battle for the Cup”

C Pennant Report Round 2,  20/2/2011 at Jamberoo

It has been a year since our last battle with Kiama for the “Town and Country Cup”, where Jamberoo felt the bitter taste of defeat.

Secret plans have been devised and debated at length in the past months. Multiple team practice sessions were held throughout January. Different team combinations tried and tested. In short, we were desperate to win back the trophy.

I am pleased to report that we were successful winning the Cup 5 matches to 2.

It seems like an easy win but it was nothing of the sort with 4 matches ending on the last hole and 1 on the 17th. Our latte-drinking town cousins put up a solid defence but were overcome in the end by some determined play.

As predicted the large crowd in attendance were entertained by the ‘pup’ (Warwick Miller) and the ‘cougar’ (Tom Zimmerman) who showed no mercy, winning their matches 6/4 and 7/5 respectively. Warren Joannou played a highly intelligent match against his big-hitting rival at number 1,winning 2 up. I was a bit concerned at one stage where Warren decided to take off his shirt and expose his healthy body. Several female (and 2 male) gallery members swooned at the sight (or was it blinded by the flash of white?). Well played Warren, it was a very important victory for the team.

Alex,’Billy’, Hemmings played an excellent match winning 2/1, again playing great golf to win from behind.

Scott Hemmings was up against a gritty opponent who kept Scott honest the whole way. Scott played a brilliant last hole to win on the 18th.

Ken Baker and Paul Hemmings were not so fortunate both losing on the 18th green despite fine efforts against capable opponents. KB informs me that it is the first pennant match he has ever lost at home, but I am sure he will overcome the trauma and be ready to win next week at St Georges Basin.

Dave Ransom

Jamberoo Pennant teams undefeated

JAMBEROO pennant teams have continued their good starts to the season with the B squad drawing with Shoalhaven Heads at Russell Vale and the fearsome reputation of the C team being enough to scare off their scheduled competitors at Worrigee.

In their first outing of the year the White Horse Cup team had a resounding 6 & 1 Victory against Russell Vale at St Georges Basin.

B Pennant

Lance Fredericks reports:

Winners for Jamberoo were Matt Bell (3/2), Pete Munro (5/3) and Tom Persson (4/2).

Ken Bradley squared his match after being 3 down in the closing stages. The Russell Vale greens were very testing for all players. This is a pleasing result as all opponents were off lower handicaps than the Jamberoo team members.

Losing matches were played by Jaryd Byers, Adrian Bell and Jarryd Buckley.

Next week’s match is against Russell Vale at Port Kembla.

C Pennant

The Grange failed to show up for their first round match against the highly fancied Jamberoo C Pennant team. This means Jamberoo takes the win.

Left to their own devices and having made the long Sunday morning trip south of Nowra anyway, the C Pennant squad decided to play with themselves.

Fortunately, no outsiders were present to see this spectacle, but we do have a report:

Round 1 v The Grange 13th Feb 2011 at Worrigee.

The greatly anticipated, long-awaited first round turned out to be a fizzer. The Grange did not show. Result, Jamberoo win 7-0 on forfeit.

With 10 players present we decided to play each other in practice matches.

Ken Baker was up against Alex Hemmings, making his C Pennant debut. Congratulations Alex on an excellent round of golf with 3 birdies to defeat a gallant KB 4/3.

Warren Joannou and Scott Hainsworth, both in their debut seasons, played each other in another interesting match up. Warren played many excellent shots (should we say bottlers) but Scotty was too hot on the day also winning 4/3.

The other games were much closer affairs with all of them going the full 18 (16?) holes. Ray (flash) Orr and Colin (the saint) Booth played out a draw in a high quality match. The only unfortunate incident was the pretty picture Ray had taken by the “safety” camera in Nowra before the start of play. Ray is ‘fine’ with it however.

Paul (timbers) Hemmings and Tony (lefty) McRae also played a seesawing game with Paul winning the last to claim bragging rights. Chris (the hat) Leckey played against yours truly, losing 2 down. The difference in the end being Chris leaving his putts hanging on the edge of the hole whereas my putts were falling in.

The C Pennant playing group are all proud to represent their club and are keen to do well and achieve the best results that they can in the spirit of good sportsmanship, friendship and fun.

We greatly anticipate the game next weekend against Kiama for the “Town and Country” Cup at home.

Hope to see some fans there next Sunday, especially with the news that the cougar and the pup will both be playing. Tickets are available at the clubhouse, 8 am hit off.

Yours in golf, Dave (7/11) Ransom

White Horse Cup

Vs Russell Vale at St Georges Basin

Report by Darryl Campbell

The White Horse Cup team, comprising of Steve Jackson, Steve Robertson, Brad Jackson, Errol Stubbs, Peter Francis, Darryl Campbell and Tony Rodriguez, the newly elected team Captain, arrived at The Basin bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for our 1st game.

The Sunday morning weather was overcast and threatening, with memories of last years cancellation on everyone’s mind and with comments of “no, not again” .

At 8.45am our time had come and we were called to the tee. Tony, in his 1st official function lost the toss and we batted 1st. Before the 7 teams had finished teeing off, Jamberoo was 2 matches up after some confused Russell Vale players went out of their nominated position.

A resounding 6 & 1 win Jamberoo win was posted and the team relaxed over a couple of beers at the end of the day.

Individual scores – Steve Jackson 5&4 win – Steve Robertson 6&5 win – Brad Jackson 6&4 win – Errol Stubbs win by Disq – Peter Francis win by Disq – Darryl Campbell 6&5 loss – Tony Rodriguez win 2 up.

Jamberoo Mens B Pennant team start 2011 with a win

THE Jamberoo B Pennant team has started their 2011 season in great style with a 4/3 win over Wollongong at the Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club.

Wins were had by Jarryd Byers (2/1), Adrian Bell (2/1) and Jaryd Buckley (4/3).

Matt Bell and Tim Young halved their matches with Ken Bradley (4/2) and Tom Persson (1 down) losing theirs.

Overall it was a good performance for a relatively untried team over an expected stronger side.

This Sunday Jamberoo B’s will play the strong (on paper) Shoalhaven Heads team at Russell Vale.

The C Pennant  team are hoping to go all the way this year and start their campaign against The Grange at Worrigee.

New Jamberoo White Horse Cup team Captain Tony Rodriguez has a long list of golfers just overflowing with talent to choose from when he names his team to take on Russell Vale  at St Georges Basin.

Rodriguez is rumoured to be embarrassed by the richness of golfing ability at his fingertips and has been pouring over the recent form and performances of his charges.
