Pennant teams have winning Sunday

JAMBEROO’S Pennant teams had a great weekend with strong wins to the C’s and White Horse Cup teams.

The C’s beat Moss Vale at 6 to 1 and the WH Cup team won a close encounter against the Grange at Port Kembla.

C Pennant captain Dave Ransom reports on his team’s relentless march toward another final:

“The news is good again with the team winning 6 matches to 1 against Moss Vale in today’s match at the tricky Vincentia course.

Winners were:  Steve (the tool man or T1) Oppert 6/5 in very convincing style at number 1; Peter (BP) Francis 2/1 with a come-from-behind victory; Warwick (pup) Miller 2 up in a close tussle; Tom (Nakajima) Zimmerman 6/5 in a very impressive display of power golf; Tony (lefty) McRae 4/3 showing that you don’t want him to be in front early as he always kills the back nine; and Paul (timbers) Hemmings who made a fantastic comeback from 4 down to win 2 up.

Unfortunately, Chris (the hat) Leckey lost his first match in 2 seasons, clearly undecided at the start with which head apparel he would wear. The lucky one let him down today.

Next week we play Gerringong at Gerringong so we will need to be at the top of our game.”

Campbell into the frey

At Port Kembla, White Horse Cup captain Daryl Campbell threw himself into the fray for the first time this year – and promptly lost 2 & 1.

Fortunately, other team members came through with Tony Rodriguez winning 4&3, Errol Stubbs winning 5&4 and Steve Jackson 3 & 2.

Steve Robertson and Brad Jackson squared their matches, contributing a point between them.

Neil Harper made the mistake of scoring 47 points in the Jamberoo Saturday comp and obviously suddenly bereft of a couple of handicap points lost 4&2.

B & C Pennant teams start with a bang

AFTER their first round washouts, Jamberoo’s B and C Pennant teams had great starts to their playing seasons with strong wins on the weekend.

B Pennants beat St Georges Basin at Shellharbour Links 5 games to 2 while C Pennants easily accounted for Nowra at Moss Vale 5 ½ to 1 ½ .

B’s captain Ken Baker reported the team performed strongly after the disappointment of having to sit out the cancelled home game last week.

The B Pennant winners were Jarrod Gehrmann 2 up, Peter Munro 6&5, Bill Hudson 3&2, Tom Persson 2&1 and Ron McRea 4&3.

Their next match is against Shellharbour at Worrigee at 8am next Sunday.

C Pennants back in the winners circle

Thank God the C Pennant team were finally able to get back on the paddock and expend some of the anticipatory nervous energy that has been building up since their Grand Final loss last year – they surely couldn’t have endured another week of inspirational team talks.

C Pennants captain Dave (T2) Ransom Reports:

“The wait is over. The skies have cleared and we get the chance to test ourselves at last. Moss Vale Golf Club was the venue for the new C Pennant team’s debut for this season, and what a debut it was with our 4 new players all performing well in their first match for the club. Congratulations to Warrick (Bubba) Miller who won 3/2, Tom (Cougar) Zimmerman who won 2/1, and Big Paul Hemmings who won 1 up with a 16 meter bomb on the last.

Commiserations to Col Booth (Mr Cricket) who lost 3/2 dispite playing well.

Reliable Chris Leckey flogged his opponent 6/5, Peter Francis had a solid

2/1 victory and Tony (Lefty) Mcrae made his usual back nine charge to square his match. T2 even managed to play twelve holes against a Vincentia opponent defeating him 3/2 for a quantum of solace.

Well done to the team for a comprehensive 5.5 to 1.5 victory over Nowra.

We will need to be on top of our form against Moss Vale next weekend, who showed the advantage playing at home winning 6/1.”

The White Horse Cup team had a bye and will play The Grange at Port Kembla on Sunday.

White Horse Cup team shipwrecked, C Pennants overboard

White Horse Cup Captain Darryl Campbell offers Valentines Day gifts to any hapless team members willing to take to the sodden Shellharbour Links course

JAMBEROO GOLF CLUB’S White Horse Cup Water Polo Squad faced off against St Georges Basin in appalling conditions at Shellharbour Links on Sunday, February 14.

Whilst the driving rain had already caused the cancellation of the B and C Pennant matches scheduled for the Jamberoo course, the White Horse team were clearly made of sterner stuff and did make it onto the paddock.

Unfortunately, as conditions worsened to near torrential rain, their Sanctuary Point dwelling opponents obviously felt more at home with water lapping their ankles and took the matches 4 ½ to 2  ½ .

Jamberoo winners were Brad Martin (6&5) and Steve Jackson (3&1), with Brad Jackson finishing square.

Failing to handle the erratic tidal conditions and strong currents were Tony Rodriguez (5&3 loss), Kim Murphy (2 down) Errol Stubbs (4&3 loss) and Brian O’Hare (5&4loss).

Despite the loss (and from a very dry seat in the Links clubhouse) team captain Darryl Campbell remained upbeat.

“Well done to the guys who endured horrific conditions,” Darryl said.

C Pennant team disappointed

After spending the week preparing for their hugely anticipated grand final rematch against Vincentia, the hyped-up C Pennant team was hugely disappointed to miss out on their season’s only home game.

Sources say the C Pennant members had spent the week attending team bonding sessions, listening to inspirational talks by the captain, participating in strategic planning workshops and even warding off wannabe team groupies, all to have it end in a washout.

Obviously feeling a little water-logged, despondent and time rich, team captain Dave Ransom screwed up his draft victory speech and instead supplied the following.

“Washed out, what can I say except we are rueing the lost home game.  Anyway here is some thoughts…

10 things you can do on a wet golf day—

1. Watch the puddles form.

2. Lay on your stomach in one and scream: “I’m drowning, I’m drowning!”

3. Tell old golf jokes badly.

4. Read a golf magazine and see if you get your golf fill that way for the week.

5. Run around and scream words to ‘Singing in the Rain’.

6. Drink coffee and sip soup.

7. Play with the ducks.

8. Watch the rain fall.

9. Pretend you’re a farmer and hope for more rain.

10. Think about the Pennant washing away with a lost home game.”

Next Sunday (February 21) B Pennants will play St Georges Basin at The Links, C Pennants will mess with Nowra at Moss Vale and with Jamberoo hosting the entire White Horse Cup round, the Jamberoo team will have a bye (They’ll probably need the two weeks to get their gear dry).

FOOTNOTE:

Jamberoo’s Jordan Widdicombe obviously found the Shellharbour Links course not too saturated on Saturday when he competed in the first round of the Shellharbour club’s Men’s  Championship*.

The 14 year old scored an eagle on the par 4 10th and a hole in one on the par 3 15th (his fifth) to card one under par off the stick.

Still, that was only good enough for 2nd place, with former Jamberoo member Dave Oppert coming in at 4 under.

(As a junior, Jordan is a member of a number of local clubs.)

C Pennants Grand Final Replay

Captain Dave Ransom with team member Steve Oppert

THE 2010 Illawarra District Golf Association Pennant season will be in full swing this weekend with all Jamberoo Golf Club’s teams hoping for strong performances this year.

Encouragingly, the B, C and White Horse Cup teams all start their campaigns flush with recruits and having the luxury of internal competition for playing spots is a healthy way to start the season.

Last year’s standout team was the C Pennant side. They had an unbeaten run to win the Division 2 title but are still smarting after being knocked out of the outright C Pennant championship by Vincentia.

The actual playing result in the final was 3 all but the Jamberoo side lost the title because their seventh team member was unable to play due to circumstances.

So their fervour at facing Vincentia in a grand final replay at Jamberoo this Sunday is understandable.

Team Captain Dave Ransom was talking up the battle this week.

“We are again expecting a tough encounter against Vincentia, but this time we will have a player for each of the seven matches,” Ransom said. ”We will be hoping to reverse last season’s result and start the new season on a high.
“The selected team is Peter Francis, Chris Leckey, Steve Oppert, Tom Zimmermann, Tony McRae, Warwick Miller, Col Booth, Paul Hemmings, Warren Joannou, and captain Dave Ransom.

“I am very excited about the team with seven 14 markers {the minimum allowed handicap for C pennants) and the other three players in good form. On paper we are probably the strongest team and I am sure the team will represent Jamberoo golf club with distinction. Congratulations to Tom Zimmermann, Warwick Miller, Col Booth, Paul Hemmings and Warren Joannou who will all be making their C Pennant debut.”

The B Pennant team, under captain Ken Baker, also fancy their chances when they line up against Worrigee at Jamberoo.

The B’s, who also boast a number of new team members, will hit off at 7.30am and the C’s at 9.15am.

The Jamberoo White Horse Cup team is actually undefeated after the first round of their season, though this is probably aided by the fact that their initial encounter against Moss Vale at St Georges Basin last Sunday (February 7) was a total washout.

Still, the team members, under captain Daryl Campbell, did look very professional as they stood under a tree in the pouring rain eating sausage sandwiches and watching a lake form on the 9th green as they waited for the powers-that-be to decide if the course was playable.

When the sun starting sneaking through the clouds during the long drive home it made the morning all the more memorable.

The undefeated, now battle-hardened White Horse Cuppers will play St Georges Basin at Shellharbour Links.

Jamberoo C Pennant Team wins its division

Team Captain Dave Ransom and team member Steve Oppert

The Jamberoo C Pennant Team has had an unbeaten run to win Division 2 of the 2009 Illawarra District Golf Association C Pennant Competition.

The team clinched the title and continued their flawless run with a 7 – 0 win over Russell Vale at The Grange on March 8.

The team includes Dave Ransom (C), Peter Francis, Chris Leckey, Terry Spicer, Steve Oppert, Tony Mcrae and Larry Kent.

Unfortunately, the team lost in the final for the outright C Pennant title against Vincentia at Shoalhaven Ex-Services (Worrigee) Course On Sunday 22 March.

The actual playing result was even on 3 all, but with one Jamberoo member unavailable to take part, Vincentia took the title 4 – 3.

As Captain Dave Ransom reported in the March 2009 Newsletter (available for download in the Notices, Reports Section):

“The final was played at Worrigee Links and in a close struggle Vincentia and our team were level 3 matches apiece. Unfortunately one of our members was unavoidably absent on the day and this game was credited to Vincentia giving them a 4 –3 victory and the pennant.
This was an exciting match with 5 of the 6 games finishing on the 18th green and could have gone either way. All of our team performed exceptionally on the day and the captain could not have asked more from his team. Well played mates. Congratulations to Vincentia who were worthy champions. They were able to find that little extra when needed, especially their number 5 who was three down with 5 to
play but who managed to play those 5 holes 2 under par to win on 18, and their number 6 who played 18 holes with only 22 putts.
The team appreciated the attendance of several supporters including our club president Phil and club captain Lance and congratulates
Athol Casey who filled in at the last moment to represent our club in the seventh game. It was a fitting tribute that Athol got a game in a pennant final after many years of stirling service as captain.”

Congratulations to the team from all Jamberoo Golf Club members and best of luck for next year.
