Russell Vale Junior Jack Tournament

Juniors Nathan Harrington, Harry Wright and Lachlan Harrington

THREE of Jamberoo’s up and coming junior golfers participated in a Junior Jack Classic held at Russell Vale Golf Club on Monday 11th July 2011. Junior Jack tournaments are beginner golfer tournaments played over 9 or 18 holes from modified tees. The tournaments are designed for players who are under 14 years of age who either do not hold an official GolfAustralia handicap or hold an official GolfAustralia handicap of greater than 20.

Harry Wright,Lachlanand Nathan Harrington teed off in the 9 hole competition in cool windy conditions with the Russell Vale greens extremely fast with some difficult pin positions. The boys are relatively new to golf and have honed their skills at the Friday afternoon junior lessons conducted by Club Pro Jim Butt. The boys had not played the Russell vale course previously but acquitted themselves well.

Nathan had an excellent day, scoring par on four of the 9 holes, was declared winner of the 9 hole competition (under the Callaway system), and walked away with his first golf trophy at the presentation ceremony concluding the event.

The next step for the boys is gaining a Golf Australia handicap by submitting three completed 18 hole cards.  They can then play in our regular competitions and perhaps in the Club’s Junior Championship, scheduled to be held in conjunction with the third and fourth rounds of the Men’s Club Championship s on Saturday Sept 3rd and 10th. They may also wish to play in the Jamberoo Junior Open held on Thursday Sept 29th. Who knows, if we can swell the ranks, we may be in position to enter a team in the Illawarra Junior Pennant tournament held over Feb / March each year.

Club forges new link with Jamberoo Public School

Principal Pam Grosse, Jamberoo Public School’s sports captains and teacher Amber Farquhar-Nicol check out the course

JAMBEROO GOLF CLUB has made moves to more actively engage young people in the local area and has forged a new community association with Jamberoo Public School.

Initially, this will result this Friday March 19 in the club closing a section of the course to provide an inspiring and picturesque venue for the school’s annual Cross Country Championship.

This all came about when the club decided recently it should do more to proactively engage local youth and Board secretary Geoff Boxsell contacted the school to offer assistance.

As it turned out the school was looking for a cross country venue.

So as a result the first four holes of the course will now be closed to golfers between 9 am and 12 noon on Friday to provide an interesting and stimulating cross country venue for the children.

There will be minimal disruption to club members who will still be able to use the other 14 holes during this time.

Additionally, the school will now become involved in the Jack Newton Junior Golf Program aimed at introducing primary school children to golf. After preliminary training at the school, those wishing to pursue the sport will graduate to the golf course to further develop their skills.

Last week the school principal Pam Grosse, the teacher looking after both these projects Amber Farquhar-Nicol and the school’s six sports captains visited the course to check out the new venue.

The school staff, students and parents are apparently delighted to have such an excellent venue for their annual event after having to do with less than perfect options in the past.

Head Greenkeeper  John Duncan has done a great job mapping out an ideal and safe cross country route for the children taking in the first four holes.

“It was a fantastic offer and we are very flattered to have this opportunity,” Principal Grosse told Kiama Independent Sports Editor, David Hall, who was on hand to cover the event for the local paper.

In the past the likes of highly successful Jamberoo junior golfers Jarrod Buckley and Jordan Widdicombe have graduated from the Jamberoo Public School to the golf club and with events and co-operation such as this here’s hoping there will be many more.

Jarrod Buckley wins Sydney nett title

Jarrod Buckley

JAMBEROO member Jarrod Buckley has tasted early success in 2010 winning the Boys 17 & Over Nett Championship at the Harvey Norman Junior Week of Golf in Sydney.

Playing off a six handicap, Jarrod carded a Nett 343 over five days play at five Sydney courses, including Pymble, Oatlands, Avondale, Ryde Parramatta and Pennant Hills Golf Clubs.

He beat his nearest rival, another Illawarra local in Shellharbour’s Thomas Holz, by five strokes in the event, conducted from January 4 – 8.

Jarrod won the Jamberoo Junior Club Championship last year, his last as a junior, and will be vying for the major senior titles in 2010.

In other junior news, Jamberoo Golf Club played host to some of the top young golfers from NSW (and elsewhere) on Thursday January 14 for the fourth round of the five day Prime 90 Junior Golf Tournament.

Jamberoo’s’ other young whizz, Jordan Widdicombe, finished third in the overall Under 16 division, beaten by Michael Taylor from NSWGC and Ugo Ottogalli from New Caledonia.

Thomas Holz won the Under 18 title.
