AN excellent field of forty two boys and girls teed up for the 2014 Junior Open on the tight Jamberoo Golf Club course.

The overcast cloudy day, perfect for golf, gradually changed.  The skies darkened and thunder in the area saw the officials call in the golfers and suspend play. Shelter was at a premium due to building work at the clubhouse, but, after a break of an hour or more and a sausage sandwich to fortify them, all golfers set out to complete their rounds.

The gross winner and 2014 Jamberoo Open Champion was Travis Fay representing the Russell Vale Club. Travis, playing off a 4 Handicap took the title with a gross score of 73. William Grimm, from the Kareela Club, carded a win in the Nett division with a score of 71.

The girls competition was under the stableford format with Selena Bosevski (Port Kembla), for the 4th year in a row, winning on a countback from Kirra Dunn from the Links Shell Cove. Both girls scored a commendable 35 points considering the weather and a break in play.

The higher handicap boys also contested in the stableford format. Nathan Harrington, Jamberoo, continuing his excellent club form took the contest with 38 points from Eamon Cupitt, Gerringong, on a countback.

Lachlan Harrington, Jamberoo not to be outdone by his brother, won the 9 hole competition with 51 strokes, pushing Laura McCombe, Jamberoo, into second place.

Thanks are extended to all golfers for supporting the Open, with special thanks to the golfers and supporters that drove down from Kareela to play in the tournament.

EFFORTS to infuse the golfing spirit in Jamberoo Primary School students have culminated in a Gala Day Ambrose event at Jamberoo Golf Club.

Twenty one students from the school have been participating in golf coaching each Friday during the 4th term. Coaching sessions started at school, progressed to Jamberoo sporting ovals and concluded on Friday Dec 6th with the Gala Day at Jamberoo Golf Course.

The coaching programme was initiated by teacher Mrs Justine McCormack, who has attended a Jack Newton Junior Golf Coaching Course, and was conducted by Mrs McCormack, Jamberoo Golf Pro Jim Butt, Jamberoo Junior Promotions Representative Phil Lewis, parent Linda McGlinchey and Club Directors Sue Paul, Rose Sheath and captain Dave Ransom.

Prizes were donated through the Jack Newton Golf Foundation and the students and adults enjoyed a sausage sizzle at the conclusion of golf. It was great to see that some parents were able to attend. The enthusiastic students improved their golfing skills over the term and hopefully many will consider golf as one of their sports in the future.

TWENTY students at Jamberoo Primary School are learning to play golf during their Friday morning sport sessions.

Justine Doorn-McCormack, a teacher at the school, participated in a Jack Newton Junior Golf Coaching Clinic and requested help from our Club.

Jim Butt, Linda McGlinchey and Phil Lewis assist Justine in running the clinics each Friday. (Club Captain, Dave Ransom and Director Sue Paul are also assisting).

The budding golfers have progressed from the school oval to the grounds bordering the 3rd, 4th hole and it is planned to graduate to the course, in a modified format, over the coming weeks. On Friday Nov 22nd the school is planning to give us more time so that we may introduce the students to a modified ‘ambrose event’ followed by a sausage sizzle at the Clubhouse. The Jack Newton Junior Golf Association through the ‘My Golf’ programme will fund the sausage sizzle and the Regional ‘My Golf’ coordinator, Tanya Kirby will be on hand to assist with the coaching and organisation. Student parents will also be encouraged to attend if possible.

Hopefully, some of the students will find success and take the game to the next stage at Jim Butt’s Friday afternoon clinics and perhaps memberships of the Club.
