Seaside and Valley Vets Tournament

Jamberoo Vet members and friends are called to support this NSWVGA event to be held at the end of November from November 26th to December 1 at both Jamberoo and Kiama Golf Clubs.

Entries close on November 12 and you can play from 1 to 4 events with the major event being the 54 hole stableford for the NSWVGA Trophy. Registration is easy just download Mitournament.com and after a short emrolment process you are ready.

All events attract several prizes for both Men and Women and include light meals.

If you can’t find time to play then perhaps you can help Jamberoo Tournament Offical, Lance Fredericks, on one or both of the days at Jamberoo. Course marshalling, cooking, score entering and cart management are just some of the tasks that you can volunteer to assist Lance. Please enter your name on the form in the golfshop if you can help. It would be most appreciated.

A good number of Jamberoo entrants in the Tournament would send out the message that our club is a great club with members willing to get involved and support this NSWVGA event.

Trevor Bell Memorial Shield Final Round

The final round of the Trevor Bell Memorial Shield was held at The Grange on Monday 30/10/2023.

The Jamberoo Vets (The Bearded Dragons) had the difficult task to make up 14 points in the final round to claim victory and true to their namesake they took up the challenge and were claiming their territory upon arrival at The Grange.

Lance had calculated that Jamberoo needed 34 points or better from each player to mount a challenge and the Roo soon let Port Kembla know this was not going to be a practice choir session singing Hallelujah.

In the closest final round ever recorded for the TBS Shield the Roo had our tails in front until the last player from Port came in with a 41 on the day ensuring a 3 point victory.

Lance’s team briefing early in the week had made the Dragons aggressive, even Peter Francis was the first to arrive and the energiser bunny Kenny Holt was driving the ball PGA distances.

Lance’s shrewd selections throughout the season ensured all Dragons participated. The team at The Grange were Larry Kent, Mal Hoy, Ron Chilby, Ken Holt, Peter Francis, Chris Leckey, Rod McLean, and Peter Hackett.

Fantastic Effort Dragons you did all Jamberoo Vets very proud.Β

News from Jamberoo GC – 28 October

Vale Pat Knight.

It is with a heavy heart that we wish to inform our members of the loss of our fellow golfer and dear friend – Pat Knight.

She will be remembered for her strength and courage in her battle with Cancer. Pat was a positive role model and an inspiration to all.

May she rest peacefully!

New Foursomes Champions Crowned.

Congratulations to Peter Francis and Noel Laman on their outstanding effort in winning the 2023 Mens Foursomes Championships. A solid round of 78 was enough to win by 2 shots from John Anthony and Dan Adams after trailing by one shot with 9 holes to play.

In the nett event Peter and Noel took first prize as well with a 64, with Renato Franciskovic and Peter Hackett 2nd on 65.5 with Larry kent and Les Skarratts grabbing third on a coutback with a 67.

With the interuptions caused by Covid and then the grand floods of the last couple of years it was good to get a chance to contest the Mens Foursomes. The new format of playing the event over 18 holes and on a Saturday saw 52 players get a chance to win the title.

Well played to all those who entered and to our 2023 Champions, Peter and Noel.

The other event of the day was a Medley Stableford with Brad Rimmer winning with 42 points and Brian Bennett 2nd with 39 (which included 4, 4 point holes) and Joshua Martin third with 37.

Latest News from Jamberoo GC

Volunteer Working Bee – Friday 27 October2023.

As advised in the Daily Cow recently our regular monthly Volunteer Working Bee will be held on Friday 27 October 2023 (last Friday of each month).

Liz Armstrong Garden Co-ordinator will be away as will Pam Middlebrook so we are not planning to undertake much on the garden front and have not ordered a skip bin.

As everyone is probably aware we have a significantly reduced greens staff following a number of departures over recent months, and we have deliberately held off hiring replacements as a budget repair mechanism following two tough financial years in a row (Covid and floods).

Accordingly, the plan for this Friday is to provide some assistance to Nick and his greens staff by undertaking slashing along Hyams Creek and giving the hazard markers a paint refresh.

Additionally, we would like to continue with painting of the club house.

We will have suitable jobs for all levels of physical capacity, so come along and get involved in the long tradition of volunteering at Jamberoo Golf Club.  Feel free to bring your partner along even if he or she is not a golfer.

If you have a brush cutter or whipper snipper and are willing to assist with the Hyams Creek long grass project please bring it along with spare cutting chord and fuel/batteries.

We will start work at 8:30 and finish at 12:00 for a sausage sizzle lunch.

Please register your intent to attend with the golf shop by Wednesday 25/10/23 so that we can ensure we have enough lunch to go around.

Monday Veterans next week and the Trevor Bell Shield.

The Veterans Committee think it important that the Trevor Bell Shield players get a chance to share in the camraderie and enjoyment of the special after golf bbq days and will miss the opportunity this Monday because of the playing of the final round at The Grange, where hopefully they can pull off a great win.

The projected warm day on Monday leads the VC to continue with the planned shotgun start with its earlier start but will save the BBQ till the Xmas function day on December 18 where all will be present and available. The format of the day will change to a single stableford and the entry fee will be $16 as usual. The last of the 2023 $10 entries will be held in the December event.

Good luck to our TBS players next Monday. You have the support of all Jamberoo Vets.

At Jamberoo we will still have our shotgun start but there will be no BBQ. You are still most welcome to stay and share a few drinks after the game with your Vets mates.

Hope to see you there.

News from Jamberoo GC

Jamberoo players at the Worrigee Festival of Golf.

Jamberoo was well represented at the Festival of Golf held at Worrigee Links. News is that our players “cleaned up”. Here is a photo of our succesful team.

Next Monday for the Vets sees a clash with the last round of the Trevor Bell Shield at The Grange and with the playing of the last of our ‘catch-up’ shotgun start ambrose events.

The Trevor Bell Shield players have expressed a desire to be part of the Monday club event and after game bbq and drinks. Of course the winning of the Trevor Bell Shield takes precedence for our gallant team who currently sit in 2nd spot.

Unfortunately with 40+ players already registered to play and the course booked, it is too late to change.

The Monday shotgun start and BBQ will run and our TBS players will make a comeback and win the Shield we pray.

All Jamberoo Vets will be 100% behind our team.

There is one more Vets Shotgun start before Xmas and all of us can join in then.

Greens Committee Report.

Last Wednesday morning saw the October Greens Committee meeting.

Greenkeeper Nick Goodger made note that we received 52 mm for September (153 mm last September); 23.5 mm so far this October. It’s relatively dry, but recent rain is encouraging growth. The new blower has arrived and is a vast improvement on the old broken unit.

Thanks to volunteers. Good job done.

Thanks to Gary Brickell and Larry Kent for organising new hazard rope on16th.

A few irrigation leaks have been found; some have been repaired with some minor ones still to do.

The new hole changer is very good and improving putting conditions around holes.

The greenstaff focus will be on mowing now – grass is growing.

Working Bee planning, fairway condition, Riparian zones along waterways and slippery bridges were discussed.

For player safety it is requested that players call-up on all par 3s.

In the near future it is envisaged that carts be allowed across the 5th hole bridge. Before this can happen the rockery across the bridge to the sixth tee will need some remediation so that cart clearance is possible. Carts would be allowed to travel behind the green to access this bridge. Please do not drive carts across the bridge until the all clear has been given.

Early groups on Wed/Sat tend to hit off early, which causes problems for the ground staff. Saturday is worst.

Players are reminded that early groups are to start off at their allocated tee time and not beforehand.

Mens Foursomes Championship.

This Saturday sees the playing of the 2023 Mens Foursomes Championship.

In a break from tradition the event will be held on a Saturday over 18 holes. The team with the best gross score will be called Foursomes Champions and have their names entered on the club honour boards and permanent trophy. In the event of a tie a playoff will be required.

The daily competition will be based on nett results.

For those players without a partner on the day a stableford will be conducted in a medley event with our female players and unmatched visitors. [###Please note the change from ‘stroke’ as advised on the flyer]

In a foursome, golfers compete in teams of two, using only one ball per team, and take it in turns to hit shots until the hole is completed. In this style of play, the team with the fewest number of shots wins.
For each team of two, members are expected to alternate who tees off. For example, Player 1 will tee off on odd-numbered holes and Player 2 will tee off on even-numbered holes.
Alternate shot is a very common name for the foursomes format and it is played in both the Ryder and Presidents Cups.

It is best not to apologise when you hit your shot under a tree or into a hazard ! Sour words have be known to follow such an apology.
