News from the Course – Tuesday

Course Safety, Etiquette & Conditions Update.

Please take care.

There have recently been two incidents on the course that could have resulted in serious injury, with players being struck by errant shots. While we continue to encourage the principles of “Ready Golf,” the Board has reiterated the importance of standard golf safety practices:

Use of Pathways

Players using golf carts are expected to follow the designated pathways wherever possible. This assists in reducing unnecessary wear and tear on the course.

Play the ball as it lies.

With cooler conditions approaching, grass growth in the rough has eased and is now more manageable, while the fairways remain in excellent condition.

Accordingly, preferred lies are no longer in place. Players are reminded to play the ball as it lies.

Under Rule 16.1 of the Rules of Golf, free relief is available when a player’s ball, stance, or swing is affected by an abnormal course condition if upon the fairway. This relief is taken by finding the nearest point of complete relief and dropping within one club-length, no closer to the hole.

Course Care – Everyone’s Responsibility.

Repairing pitch marks on greens and divot holes on the course.

The number of unrepaired pitch marks remains unacceptable. I personally repaired over 50 on Saturday alone, including more than 30 within three metres of the hole. This indicates that many players are either not repairing their marks or are doing so incorrectly.

Repairing divot holes – A significant number of divots are also being left unrepaired. At least 40 were personally filled during Saturday’s round, with many more remaining.

How to Repair Correctly

  • Ball Marks (Greens): Use a divot tool to gently push the turf from the edges toward the centre, then smooth the surface with your putter. Avoid lifting the centre, as this damages the roots. Do not simply tap the mark down with your putter.
  • Divots (Fairways and Rough): Replace the divot where possible and press it firmly back into place. If the divot cannot be replaced, use the sand provided to fill the hole level with the surrounding surface. Please ensure you carry and use your sand bucket.

Reminder:

A simple rule of etiquette applies: repair your own mark, plus at least one more.

Easy things we can all do to help preserve our course.

Temporary Green in play.

Yes you have all noticed. The 4th green is being rebuilt and will be larger. The work is expected to take about 3 months. A temporary green has been put in place about 55 metres short of the old hole.

Jamberoo Players in Action.

The Grange Open Day Foursomes was played Wednesday with four Jamberoo women entered.

The Nett Runner Up winners were these locals with a score of 70. Well done!

Public Holiday Competitions.

In response to member enquiries, it is the established policy of the Club to conduct medley competitions on public holidays.

While these competitions were previously administered as “walk-up starts”, advancements in technology now allow entries to be managed through the Club’s online booking system, which has become standard practice.

It has also been longstanding policy that supplementary competitions — such as Nearest the Pins, Super Shot, Eagles Nest, and Drive and Pitch events — are not conducted in conjunction with public holiday competitions. This approach reflects the operational requirement to limit staffing on such days due to applicable penalty rates. Accordingly, no staff are rostered to finalise competitions on public holidays, and as a result, there may be minor delays in the publication of results to GA Connect and to the Club Result page.

Notwithstanding the above, and in response to member feedback, the Club will trial the inclusion of selected supplementary competitions on particularly well-supported days, such as Easter Saturday, to determine the ongoing viability of this initiative.

Using your phone to score?

Please be aware of ‘dark spots’ around the clubhouse and carpark where your phone may not complete your scorecard as expected.

Always check to see if the results have gone through.

Wednesday Medley Competition

by Dave Ransom

Anthony Humphries’ outstanding Easter form has continued, with a superb round on Wednesday highlighting his purple patch. Anthony fired a brilliant 65 off the stick, made even more remarkable by an unfortunate double bogey on the final hole. His efforts have seen his handicap trimmed to an impressive 2.3.

He was well supported by fellow low markers Noel Laman and Joel McIntosh, both of whom also produced quality rounds.

In Division 2, Al Thrower led the way with an excellent 40-point performance, which also helped partner Ron Hewson secure second place in the Fourball event.

Results:

Division 1
Winner: Anthony Humphries – 41 pts
2nd: Noel Laman – 37 pts (c/b)
3rd: Wayne Arnott – 37 pts
4th: J. McIntosh – 36 pts

Division 2
Winner: Al Thrower – 40 pts
2nd: Laurie Fogarty – 38 pts (c/b)
3rd: Peter Willis – 38 pts
4th: Greg Clark – 37 pts

4BBB
Winners: Peter Francis & Noel Laman – 47 pts
2nd: Ron Hewson & Al Thrower – 45 pts

A strong field and some excellent scoring across both divisions made for another great day of competition.
