4 Ball Match Play Titles reach exciting conclusions

Both the Men’s and Women’s 4 Ball Matchplay titles are reaching their conclusions for 2023.

In the Women’s, the final was played last Friday with the team of Helen Wainwright and Pam Middlebrook winning 5/4 over Jenelle Anderson and Kay Brennan to become the 2023 Hooker Cup Champions. Congratulations to both teams on reaching the final and well played to our new champions.

In the Mens the final is about to be played between Peter Francis & Noel Laman versus Ron Hewson & Pete Munro. A close match is certainly expected and on the cards.

Good luck to both teams.

Hot weather precautions.

We have had several hot days already on the course and with summer approaching players are advised to take some precautions.

While the lower activity levels of golf compared to athletics mean that the risks are somewhat reduced, the individual response to heat varies from person to person and therefore no hard and fast guidelines will suit every member of a population.
Those who need to be especially vigilant include children, overweight people, those unacclimatised (having come from cooler climes), those who are unwell or otherwise at risk.
Factors which impair the body’s ability to dissipate heat are:
High ambient temperature, Solar radiation, Humidity (which compromises the efficacy of sweating)
and Dehydration.

  • Where possible, golf should be played in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • To diminish the risk of heat stress, fluid should be consumed before, during and after golf. Water is considered an adequate fluid option for activities lasting up to one hour. Participants in events or activities exceeding one hour are recommended to use carbohydrate-based sports drinks as a means of replacing fluids, carbohydrates and electrolytes lost during prolonged activity. In regard to post-event re-hydration, it needs to be remembered that this can take 24 hours or more.
  • Light coloured, loose fitting clothes, of natural fibres or composite fabrics, with high wicking (absorption) properties that provide for adequate ventilation are recommended as the most appropriate clothing in the heat.
  • It is recommended that all players, caddies and officials wear hats to assist in the prevention of heat illness. Ideally, hats should be wide-brimmed and well vented.
  • Sunscreen with a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating of 30+ should be used by all players, it is recommended that the sunscreen is reapplied periodically at approximately two-hour intervals.

2023 Mens Eclectic Champion Decided

After three months of collecting data from every hole for every round played the 2023 Eclectic Champion has been decided.

In the end some incredible results were obtained with the eventual winner scoring birdies on 15 holes and then having to survive the onset of handicap calculations. One half the daily handicap on the last day of competition was deducted to give the overall nett score.

Full Eclectic Results

It was close but Noel Laman was able to hold on to grab the Fredericks IGA award and Shield with a final nett score of 49.
Paul Rodgers, 49.5, and Chris Leckey, 50.0, put up a strong last day challenge but couldn’t quite close the gap.

Veteran Membership cards waiting to be collected.

Rod H has noticed that several members have yet to collect their Vets Membership Card from the starter.

Here are some ready to be collected.

Please take the time to pick up your card.

Apparently during the Vets comp on Monday Chris Leckey took his clubs for a swim on near the 13th tee. This is what I was told anyway!

His friends seemed quite concerned, although there seem to be smiles on their faces.

I’m sure Chris was not amused!

Jamberoo GC – Gold Medal Day

There is more to being a member of Jamberoo than just playing a round with your mates. Exciting and often free in conjunction competitions and charity events; ability to represent the club in Illawarra Pennants; Supershots, drive and pitch and nearest the pin awards in every competition and the chance to get your name onto the ‘Honour Board” for important club events and become part of Jamberoo GC history!

2023 Gold Medal Playoff.

Congratulations to our 2023 Mens Gold Medalists and Golden Putter!

The weather threatened to interupt play but most players were able to complete their rounds in relative dryness. The course was in fantastic condition with the greens superb.

The only heavy rain was for a 10 minute period around midday. The players who withdrew early missed a great day of golf obviously putting too much emphasis on weather apps, or weather in Kiama, which again proved to be wrong. All up, 75 players played in the competitions today.

In A grade, David Garcia, played a great round of golf to set up his nett score of 62 which won him the Gold Medal. The B grade gold medalist was Matthew Ross with an impressive 66 nett and the C grade Gold Medalist was Allan Wight also with a fine 66 nett.

David Garcia – 2023 A Grade Gold Medalist

The first qualifiers for the 2024 Gold Medal Playoff, and November Monthly Medalists, were Chris Leckey (A grade) with a 60 nett, Colin Van Woerkom (B grade) with a 65 nett and Phil Adams (C grade) with 63 nett.

For the information of some of our newer members, the Gold Medal is only contested once a year and is one of the Honour Board Awards available to members. If you qualify it is an achievement in itself.

Congratulations to the three 2023 Gold Medalists on grand performances.

2023 Golden Putter.

Another competition held each medal day is the best putter award. Players count their putts and record it on their scorecard. The 12 monthly winners then have the chance to become the ‘Golden Putter” in an event held in conjunction with the Gold Medal Playoff day. The ‘Golden Putter’ playoff is also held.

The 2023 Golden Putter is David Garcia who managed a phenomenal 22 putts on the day.

Ken Bradley – holding the Golden Putter Trophy.

2023 Mens Eclectic.

The Eclectic competition runs from the Club Championships until the Gold Medal Day. Results are being tabulated at the moment and the winner of the Fredericks IGA Shield will be announced next week.

Eagles spotted at Jamberoo.

At Jamberoo to score an eagle in a competition (that is 2 under par on a hole) is a fairly rare event. Last Wednesday and yesterday, eagles were achieved!

Congratulations to Daniel Adams and Andrew Ball on the achievement.

Last Wednesday it was my honour to witness Daniel score his eagle on the 12th hole. Hitting his drive around and over the ‘tree on the corner’, a 7 iron was needed to put his ball onto the green in 2 shots. A curling right to left putt found the centre of the hole for an eagle 3.

Yesterday Andrew smashed his drive over ‘that tree’ and played a hybrid club to just short of the green. A perfect chip descended into the bottom of the cup for the second eagle on the 12th in a week.

Both will receive 3 balls as a reward for playing a perfect hole.

Andrew Ball

Women’s Gold Medal Round.

With the Melbourne Cup Day to be held this Tuesday the Women’s Gold Medal Day will be played in conjunction with the Monthly Medal on Tuesday 14th of November. Good luck to all that have qualified.

Gold Medal Playoff List.

This Saturday sees the playoff for the Gold Medals. To qualify you must have won a monthly medal in the previous 12 months, November 2022 to October 2023.

A full list of participants is pictured below.

The rest of the field on Saturday are playing in the first monthly medal for the new season, 2023-24.

The Golden Putter Playoff is also contested on the day from those who qualified over the previous 12 months. Here is the list of competitors.

Finally this Saturday is also the final round of the Mens Eclectic which has run since August.

After the round the best score achieved on every hole for every player is calculated and half of the daily handicap used on Sturday is subtracted to give us the Fredericks IGA Eclectic Champion for 2023.

The following players were leading coming into this final round.

Noel Laman, George Goor, Peter Francis, Ken Holt, Ron Hewson, Ken Bradley, Wayne Griffiths, Brian Carr, Les Skarratts, Paul Rodgers, Alan Jones, & Chris Leckey.

There are many others close and a few birdies or pars might close the gap.
