Jamberoo spanked

Jamberoo’s C Pennant and White Horse Cup teams had poor weekends with the C’s defeated 7 zilch at Port Kembla and the Cuppers travelling all the way to Sussex Inlet for a 5 and 2 hiding by St Georges Basin. The B Pennant team lost to division leaders Port Kembla.

C Pennant Report Round 3 13/3/2011 at Port Kembla

Report by Dave Ransom

Cougar caged, Pup sent packing with the tail between his legs and Billy the kid smacked.

I knew it would be difficult, but little did I realise how difficult it would turn out to be. In a very disappointing result Port Kembla proved too strong for us winning all 7 matches and taking out the division, leaving us wondering what might have been.

Despite the end result the match was closer than the final score indicates. Four of the matches progressed to the 18th green.  These games could have easily gone our way. When the pressure was applied, however, the Port players were able to find that little extra and win all of these games.

Results were : Ray Orr lost 6/4, Alex Hemmings lost 8/7, Ken Baker and Scott Hainsworth both lost 1 down, Warwick Miller lost 4/2 , Tom Zimmerman lost 2 down and Chris Leckey lost 1 down.

Thanks again to our support team of Warren Joannou and Paul Hemmings. It was a sad day for them as well.

Despite the disappointing final result the team members should look back on the season with pride and reflect on the positives that they achieved as individuals and as a team. They represented the club with honour and played to the best of their abilities winning 3 out of 4 matches against strong opposition.

I personally appreciated the time and effort they put into the season and I look forward to continuing friendship with them all. Remember, in the long run,‘It’s not the things you take but the friends you make’.

Until next season,

Yours in golf,

Dave Ransom

B Pennant lose to division leaders

Report from Lance Fredericks

We didn’t do it! Our B Pennant team lost to Divisional leaders, Port Kembla, 5 ½ matches to 1 ½ on Sunday 12 March at St Georges Basin.

Confronted by very recently cored and un mowed greens and a team of low markers the effort required was too great. Jarryd Buckley broke his form slump with a convincing 5/4 win and Tom Persson nearly edged out his unbeaten opponent to square his match. Again Jamberoo had to play opponents on handicaps of 3 to 4 strokes lower. Port’s team ranged from 6 to 9 and Jamberoo from 9 to 13.

Jaryd Byers had a horror start losing the first 4 holes then hung on to lose 4/3. Adrian Bell had difficulty with the greens and went to 5 down then recovering to claw back to finish losing 3/2. Matt Bell could not quite hang on the last few holes going down 3/1. Tim Young and Ken Bradley both hung in until the last couple of holes with Tim losing 2/1 and Ken losing 3/2.

The team had a good season winning twice, squaring twice and losing once. All won matches except Ken who squared two of his four.  The team finished third in Division one as Shoalhaven Heads managed to get one point ahead of Jamberoo with a win on Sunday.

Thanks to all players and well done.

White Horse Cup

The White Horse Cup team travelled all the way to Sussex Inlet only to record a disappointing loss to St Georges Basin 5 and 2.

Captain Tony Rodriguez had a strong win 6 and 4 and Peter Francis came from behind to win 3 and 1.

“I’m a truly great golfer. Sometimes I even surprise myself,” the eternally modest Rodriguez said.

Not in his good books were Errol Stubbs, Brian O’Hare, Brad Jackson, Boyd Sylvester and Steve Jackson.

The Cuppers have a chance to make amends when they take on Port Kembla at The Grange next Sunday.

C Pennant and White Horse Cup teams have strong wins 6/3/11

C Pennant Report Round 4 6/3/2011 at Kiama v St George’s Basin

or Red Hot Chilly Peppers

Report by Dave Ransom

I am pleased to report that the C pennant team continued with their good form and recorded another win against the strong Basin team 5 ½  wins to 1 ½ consolidating their lead in the division.

Ray Orr, Alex Hemmings, Tom Zimmerman, Tony McRae and Chris Leckey achieved winning matches. Warwick Miller squared his match and Warren Joannou was gallant in defeat.

Ray, ‘flash’, Orr was truly ‘orrsome’ controlling his match from the outset and recording a solid win at number 1 by 4/2. Ray played an excellent match and continuously put the pressure on his opponent with well struck shots. Well played.

Alex, ‘Billy the kid’, Hemmings continued with his excellent form and won his match 5/3. Billy is a true crowd favourite attracting cheers and wolf-whistles as he passed Minnamurra station on the 12th hole. Clearly the boys on the station were very impressed with his beautiful golf swing (or was it his tight fitting shirt and slacks?)

‘Dogged’ play by his opponent challenged the Pup, Warwick Miller, on the tight Kiama course. In an excellent match Pup twice came from behind to clinch a squared match, producing the big shots when it counted. Well played Pup.

The cougar produced one of those ‘birthday’ rounds and annihilated his opponent 7/6. Tom was on his game and played a wonderful match against his opponent. The roar was rather quiet today, however, Tom not wishing to embarrass his opponent any further.

The Little Bottler, Warren, played a very nice game of golf. Several brilliant shots soon saw Warren in the lead but his opponent responded in kind to have Warren 2 down at the turn. ‘Bot’ continued to play well but his opponent was on a roll and there was little Warren could do, eventually losing 6/5.

Lefty McRae, playing in his first (real) game of the season, was involved in the other close match. A very evenly fought match of high calibre saw Tony win the last two holes to claim victory 2 up. Tony clinching victory when he rifled in a 4 iron next to the flag on the last.

Chris Leckey also playing in his first (real) match of the season was up against the wily Basin captain. ‘The Hat’ managed his way around the course in excellent fashion recording a comfortable win 5/4. The Basin captain only has one arm but despite this handicap is an excellent player and had defeated all of his opponents up to this point. Opponents were calling him the ‘one-armed bandit’. Clearly Chris’ choice of headwear was too much for his opponent and Chris won easily. Well played.

The only negative of the day was recorded by the team captain, who has learnt to distinguish, at some personal pain, the difference between a cherry tomato and a red hot chilli that he found growing wild on the course. They still look the same to me! (Ok there is a slight difference in the taste).

Thanks to Scotty and timbers. I know the players appreciated your support.

The winner of next week’s game against Port Kembla will progress to the final. We are expecting a hard match especially as we are playing at Port but if we continue in our current form then I am expecting  a positive result for the team.

Cheers from Dave(chilli peppers) Ransom. (Ouch my mouth hurts)

Jamberoo White Horse Cup Vs Bowral at Port Kembla 6/3/11

SUGGESTIONS of regular group hugs by team captain Tony Rodriguez were enough to terrify Jamberoo White Horse Cup squad members into stellar performances against an awestruck Bowral at Port Kembla.

After a drubbing in their previous match, the Cuppers turned the tables to win 5 ½ to 1 ½. They were left wondering if it all wasn’t just a clever ploy by the wily Rodriguez, who has figured out if plain threats and intimidation won’t work, maybe suggestions of man love will.

Rodriguez used similar tactics on his personal opponent, a Bowral solicitor, innocently inquiring if he represented the Milat family.

Rodriguez won his match 5 and 4, Peter Francis hit a great approach before an anxious crowd on the 18th and sunk the pressure putt to win 1 up, Errol Stubbs cantered home in the closing stages to take his match 3 and 2, Brian O’Hare won 4 and 2 and Boyd Sylvester, who managed to entice his own caddy to the course, bolted in 6 and 5.

The always sartorially elegant John Anthony squared his match on the 18th hole, possibly not helped by the noisy crowd following this group down the final stretch.

The newly non-smoking Steve Robertson was the only one to finish the wrong side of the ledger, but is doing a great job giving away the filthy weed and should be back bigger and better than ever once the effects of the medication wears off.

Historic handover of Town and Country Cup

Phil Green accepts the magnificent Town and Country Cup from Steve Oppert

GROWN men wept, women swooned and scores of babies were renamed at the historic handover of the coveted Town and Country Cup to officials at Jamberoo Golf Club recently.

The Town and Country Cup has a long and proud tradition, stretching back almost two years, and symbolises ultimate dominance in the golfing world.

In particular, it pertains to that part of the golfing world that is concerned with the annual challenge between Jamberoo and Kiama C Pennant teams.

Such is the fierce rivalry between these two camps, two years ago it was deemed appropriate that a substantial trophy matching the stature of the encounter be procured and presented to the winner.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors Steve and Gayle Oppert of Oaks Automate such a cup became existent.

The grand plan only went awry – to some at least – when the blaggards at Kiama won the inaugural Town and Country Cup match and thus took the beautiful brand new trophy home.

This inconsistency in the smooth functioning of the universe was rectified a few weeks back when the gallant Jamberoo C Pennant team walloped Kiama 5 and 2.

After some initial strong resistance, the cup was eventually handed over, enabling the sponsor to officially present the trophy to Jamberoo Club Captain Phil Green.

The top shelf of the club trophy cabinet is currently being cleared so the Town and County Cup can take its rightful place of honour.

Nailbitingly though, it now less than 12 months before the official  possession of the cup will once against be placed in the hands of the golfing gods.

Did we mention the cup was donated by Steve and Gayle Oppert of Oaks Automotive? Check it out for all your automotive needs.

C Pennant on top, B’s face a tough task against Port Kembla

The Jamberoo C Pennant team lead their division after a win over Worrigee on Sunday whilst the B Pennant team will need to pull out all stops against competition leaders Port Kembla next week after a draw with St Georges Basin.

The White Horse Cup team had a bye and will meet Bowral on Sunday at Port Kembla.

Reports below:

B Pennant

(Report from Tom Perrson)

Our B Pennant team had 3 ½ – 3 ½ drawn match with St Georges Basin at Wollongong on Sunday 27 February.

This was a disappointing result as a win would have kept us within one point of Port Kembla with one round to go.

We will now have to defeat Port Kembla by 5 matches to two at St Georges Basin on 13 March to make the final. We can do it!

Individual results were: Winners – Jaryd Byers 3/2, Adrian Bell 2/1, Matt Bell 4/3. Ken Bradley halved his match and losers were Tom Persson 2/1, Jarryd Buckley 3/2 and Tim Young 5/3.

Congratulations again to all the Team.

Next  match is against Port Kembla at St Georges Basin on 13 March.

C Pennant

(Report from Dave Ransom)

C Pennant Report Round 3 at St Georges Basin 27/2/2011

An excellent day’s golf on the picturesque St George’s Basin course resulted in Jamberoo defeating Worrigee 5 ½ matches to 2 ½ to take the lead in the division.

Excellent wins were recorded by Scott Hainsworth 5/3, Ken Baker 4/2, Warwick Miller 3/1, Tom Zimmerman 1 up, and Paul Hemmings 2/1.

Ray Orr managed to square his match and Warren Joannou was not able to repeat his success at number 1 losing 4/2.

Scotty played a great follow up game after last week’s heroics to always have his opponents measure and win comfortably on the 15th.

KB returned to the winner’s list with a strong performance despite his opponent holing several good putts during the round.

Pup played the game of the day being only 7 over to win on the 17th green. An excellent performance to follow up last week’s victory. Warwick’s opponent was pugnacious and refused to give up but some quality play at the right moment saw the pup’s tail wagging!

The cougar was pushed all the way by his big hitting opponent and managed to defuse his opponent’s charge on the 18th green. This was another quality match and certainly brought out the best in Tom who had to dig deep to record the victory. The growl of victory was awesome.

The big-hitting Timbers seemed to be trailing all day but found that little extra to record an excellent win on the 17th green. Paul was able to drill a couple of drives straight down the centre when the pressure was on for which his opponent could not respond.

Flash was left regretting several missed chances to win his match. Personally I believe he was still shaking from the trip down to Sanctuary Point in my car.  Several times he broke out into a cold sweat as we passed “safety cameras” and he was clearly upset by the dead kangaroo that I managed not to avoid. Despite this Ray played a good game and did almost enough to win.

The bottler, Warren Joannou, tried hard but could just not find the form he was looking for consistently enough and fell to a chip in just as he was making a surge.

Thanks also to The Hat, Lefty and Billy for your support on the day.

We look forward to next week’s game against St George’s Basin at Kiama expecting another hard encounter.

Until then, yours in golf, Dave Ransom.

Clampett rushed back into White Horse Cup team

Former White Horse Cup captain Darryl Clampett honing his short game at Jamberoo last week

AXED former captain Darryl Clampett is highly likely to be rushed back into the Jamberoo White Horse Cup playing squad after a dismal team performance against Sussex Inlet on Sunday.

Clampett (pictured left) was officially “rested” after his personal 6&5 drubbing in the first round (won by Jamberoo 6&1), but without him the team only managed one win from seven matches against the competition front runners at Russell Vale.

Team members were reported to be unimpressed by the pre-match pep talk from new captain Tony Rodriguez.

“It might have been lengthy and quite dramatic but we felt it lacked real conviction,” one team member confided.

“The whole thing of painting half your face blue and riding up and down shouting ‘they can take our lives, but they can’t take our freedom’ has all been done before,” the team member said.

“We’re just amazed they let him bring a horse onto the course. Lord knows where he got it from.”

Sussex Inlet were undefeated after two rounds of the cup and inflicted a similar 6&1 pasting on The Grange last week.

“I knew we were going to get flogged today,” a less than enthusiastic sounding Rodriguez said after the match. “I’m just surprised we didn’t lose seven nil.”

With a bye next week, Rodriguez will have plenty of time to work on team selection, positive match strategy, and a badly needed new pre-game inspirational routine.

John Anthony’s 1 up win was the only positive to come out of the match, though all the losses were reasonably close.

Rodriguez lost 2 down, Errol Stubbs lost 3&1, Brian O’Hare lots 3&1, Brad Jackson and Steve Robertson both lost 1 down, while Steve Jackson went down 4&2.
