B Pennant win Round 1 at the Links Shell Cove

THE pennant season is off and running and the B pennant side has started with an impressive win, 3-2, against Vincentia.

Captain Tom Persson reports that It was an awful day weather wise, with intermittent rain, strong wind gusts, just plain unpleasant! However great play by Adrian, Paul and Pete brought the side home.

Results:

Adrian Bell won 6&5

Paul Hazeltine won 4&3

Pete Munro won 4&3

Ray Orr lost 3&2

Tom Persson lost 4&3

Well played, we look forward to an equally impressive performance next week against Shoalhaven Heads at the Worrigee Links.

The White Horse Cup squad have their first game next Sunday (February 10) against Wollongong at Jamberoo. The round was moved from The Grange because of damage to that course, giving the cuppers a welcome home ground advantage.

Inter-Club Representative Pennants 2013

WITH With the turn of the year the club’s attention turns to the upcoming Men’s and Women’s Inter- club Pennant Competitions. The Ladies is held midweek throughout March, April and May while the Men compete on Sundays throughout February, March and some of April. In both the ladies’ and men’s pennants there are 3 teams.

Congratulations to those members who are prepared to sacrifice their time to represent our club in these prestigious events.

While the ladies have had some success in their competition, it is disappointing that our men have yet to taste victory in the history of the club. This is despite some excellent results in recent years, where we seem to be perennial runners up in our divisions.

This year the Match Committee and President are determined to assist the men’s teams take that next step by allocating a practice session/match to be played on Saturday 19th of January with 5 tee times required from 7.38 am.

We thank the members of Jamberoo Golf Club who usually play at these times for their understanding for this one-off event.

JAMBEROO GOLF CLUB has entered teams in the B, C and White Horse Cup competitions for the upcoming 2013 Pennant Season.

Members who are interested in representing their club in these competitions are invited to submit their name on the relevant sheet which is available outside the Golf Club Office and the Starter’s shed.

The Illawarra District Golf Association has made some changes in the team size and handicap limits for the 2013 season. Each game will consist of 5 matches instead of the previous 7. This has been implemented to hopefully encourage more clubs to participate in each pennant.

Handicap limits have also been altered. Handicaps in B Pennant will now range from 6 -12 (formerly 7-13). In C Pennant handicaps will range from 13 -18 (formerly 14-18). This again has been implemented to encourage greater participation by clubs. White Horse Cup handicaps are up to a maximum of 24.

The competitions commence on Sunday the 3rd of February for the B Pennant and White Horse Cup and on Sunday 10th of February for the C Pennant.

In B Pennant we have been placed in Division 2 with our first game against Vincentia Golf Club at the Links Shell Cove. Other games are against Gerringong, Kiama, Nowra, Shoalhaven Heads, Links Shell Cove and Worrigee Links. Our home game is on the 24th February against Worrigee. Last year we were placed 2nd in the division with poor weather ruining our chances.

In C Pennant we have also been placed in Division 2 with our first game against Gerringong at Kiama on the 10th of February. Other games are against Vincentia, Nowra, St Georges Basin, Vincentia and Kiama. Our home game is against St Georges Basin on the 17th of February. Last year we placed 3rd in the division after leading until the last round. We are also holders of the ‘Town and Country’ Cup in our annual challenge against Kiama Golf Club.

We have been placed in Division 1 for the White Horse Cup. The season commences against Wollongong at the Grange on the 10th of February. There is no home game in White Horse Cup and we host the other clubs on the 3rd of February. Other games are against Bowral, Links Shell Cove, Moss Vale, Port Kembla, Russell Vale, Sussex Inlet and The Grange. Last year we performed well finishing 6th in our division.

If you feel that you would like to be involved in these representative teams please place your name on the relevant list. We are planning to pick teams by mid-December so don’t leave it to the last moment or you may miss out.

We wish all teams great success for the upcoming season.

C Pennant Golf Report – Round 6 at Nowra

Round 6 vs Nowra at Nowra Golf Club

What do the whispering Poplars whisper?

For those of our members who have never played the picturesque Nowra course one of the features is the elegant whispering Poplars that line many of the fairways. Standing beneath their spread, with the occasional golf ball entrapped within their narrow branches, one wonders, what is it that they whisper?
After the enforced rest week due to the rain last weekend, and the consequent, unfortunate elimination of our gallant B Pennant team, the expectations of the club fell directly on the C pennant team. Leading the division by 0.5 of a match the pressure was well and truly. Nothing short of a 7-0 victory would ensure victory in the division. What made it even more difficult was that we were playing the home team on a rain-affected 9-hole composite course. As I have previously stated, it is a great advantage to play at home, and so it proved to be with our team recording a sad loss, 4-3.
Excellent wins were recorded by Tony McRae, 2/1; Steve Oppert, 1 up; and Tom Zimmerman 5/3. Those less fortunate were Warren Joannou, Wayne Griffiths, Chris Leckey and Chris Goodwin.
Tony again made his famous back nine charge to win a great victory, Steve winning the last hole to withstand his strong Nowra opponent and Tom again playing very solidly to record an easy victory.
Chris G and Wayne both tasted the bitter pill of defeat for the first time, 6/5 and 6/4 respectively, finding their opponent’s local knowledge too much to overcome.
Warren tried very hard and several times played some brilliant golf to surge back into contention in his match. Unfortunately his opponent refused to buckle under the pressure and saw Warren off on the 16th hole.
Chris L trailed early, and was 3 down at the turn. Despite the captain putting extreme pressure on him, saying that his was the key game, and he had to win, Chris responded exceptionally to win 3 holes in a row. The momentum had changed. Unfortunately his opponent took advantage of some lucky breaks, changing the momentum back his way, and closed out the match 2/1.
And I know what those Poplars whisper. They whisper, “I’m not giving your ball back!”, but more importantly they shout, “I hope to see you back again, well played mate, better luck next year”.
Until that time arrives, yours in golf,
Dave Ransom (Captain)

B Pennants and White Horse Cup
The rain prematurely ended what was a very good year for the B Pennant squad. A final round washout meant they finished just one point behind the section leaders.
The White Horse Cup team have had a washout and a bye in the past two weeks but if conditions allow will be back in action this weekend against Wollongong at The Links Shell Cove. Their final match is the following week against Kiama at Kiama.
