News from the Greens Committee – May

Members may be aware that we have an active greens committee at the course that meet monthly to discuss course matters with our Head Greenkeeper.

Last month we were informed of the purchase of new yellow coloured flagsticks which will be rolled out onto the course when they arrive. The design of these sticks make it impractical to continue the use of the position balls on the sticks as they have a bulge in their middle.

The committee decided to trial having no position markers on the sticks for a month to guage member opinion.

Apparently the colour of the new flagsticks will make it easier to see their position on the greens.

If this is not popular, one suggestion is to place different coloured flags on the sticks similar to what happens at many other clubs to help with flagstick sighting on the greens.

Please be patient and wait till the end of May.

Clearing of tree overhang on tee shutes

The committee and the greenkeeper are well aware of the issues regarding the overgrowth of trees on the course. Plans have been arranged but due to operational restrictions concerning staff shortages and injuries and retirements it has been impossible to start this work during the growth season. With colder weather soon approaching it will be possible for this work to commence.

Volunteering at the course

We are hoping to get together a group of interested members to help with various aspects of course maintenace on a regular basis. If you have time on your hands and wish to contribute to your club then please be alert for upcoming notices asking for your assistance.

Some things we can all do to assist

I am a firm believer in thinking that the course should be in a better state after every round we play.

This can be achieved by properly repairing pitch marks on greens and divot holes on fairways. Don’t just repair your own, look for others as well and fix them too.

Easy to do!

Upcoming Events

Many important events are coming up in the next few months and it may be appropriate to place them in your diary so that you won’t miss out on playing.

  1. The 27th of May will see the annual playing of the President vs Captain stableford matchplay. The cost of the day will be $20 with the extra $4 going to charity. Each player is allocated to the Presidential team or the Captain’s team and will play an opponent in their match. The player with the greater stableford score scores 1 point for their team or 1/2 point if it is all square.
  2. On May 29th the Monday Veterans will play a shotgun start for a $10 entry fee with a free BBQ and raffle at the end. Meet at the club at 7.30 for an 8 am hitoff.
  3. The Women’s Championship will be contested over 3 rounds commencing June 13, then June 15 and finishing on June 20th.
  4. Advanced notice for the Mens Championship to held over two weekends in August. Dates are 5th, 6th, 12th and ending on the 13th.

A Convocation of Eagles descended on the Course on Saturday

Congratulations to Bob Neilson and Peter Hackett for their respective eagles on Saturday. Bob scored his on the fifth hole and Peter on the eighth.

Well played to you both!

Bob’s follows his trifecta of ‘super shots’ last week. Bob is certainly on fire at the moment.

Both receive a gift of 3 balls from the club for their achievement.

New Poles

Club handyman, starter and allround good guy, Rod Hodkinson, and his mate have redesigned these football retrievers to help those unfortuante to kick their football in the water.

He is currently planning to develop one for lost golfballs!

Footgolf is still an important money raiser for the club and we thank Rod and his mate for the time and effort to help out.

2023-24 Membership invoices

The 2023-24 Membership Invoices are available in the boxes in the golf shop for members to pick up.

The new membership year starts on the 1st of June. The fees have been set for $680, a modest increase given the high inflation rate.

If you wish to pay monthly then this needs to be setup now so that you don’t miss out on any golf. Please see the Office for the application forms.

Women’s Pennants Results

Well done to our Silver team for its gallant win at Russell Vale today. With carts not allowed it made a difficult task for a couple of our players.

Jenelle Anderson won 7/5

Lyn Kuskey won 5/4

Jenny Gray won 6/4

Margaret Cook won 6/4

Gail Rutledge lost on 18th hole 2 down

The Jamberoo team is equal 1st.

The Bronze team’s match was washed out after heavy rain on the weekend.

Bronze is only 1 point behind 1st place.

Good luck to both teams next week.

Mens Vets Championship

Congratulations to Arthur Bosanquet on the defence of his Mens Veterans Championship which was played last Monday under good conditions.

Arthur fired an excellent 73 off the stick to win the 2023 Championship. His round was 8 better than that of Mal Hoy on 81 with Craig Foster and Ken Holt next on 82.

Ken Holt was the Nett winner with a sensational 63, two ahead of Rodney Poidevin.

Arthur is to be commended on his win which is certainly due to a commitment to practice and a dedicated warm up routine. Well played and well deserved.

Vale Betty

Thank you Betty for the many things you have done to help our golf club, and indeed, the whole of the Kiama community during your lifetime of service.

I am sure you would be pleased with the number of Jamberoo members, and the many others, who attended your funeral today all showing their highest regard for your efforts over your life and for which you so rightfully deserve.

You will be missed.

To share her last thoughts,

“Into the presence I come

Not by the things I have done

But by thy grace, thy grace alone

Into thy presence I come”

Sadly missed but forever in our hearts.

Jamberoo Women form the honour guard at the funeral

Vale Betty Chittick

Betty Chittick’s funeral is being held at the Kiama Pavilion on Tuesday 2nd May at 1pm. If you are attending would you wear the club shirt if possible.

To enable players in the Women’s competition to also attend the funeral I have sought permission from Nick to play from 7am on Tuesday. So you can both play and attend the funeral.

Because many players will be going to the funeral the decision has been made to not have lunch (sandwiches & slice) after golf on Tuesday. If you wish you can order a sausage roll or pie.

Betty was an important part of Jamberoo Golf especially women’s golf, so I hope as many as possible will be able to attend the funeral to pay respect to her.

Anzac Day at the Club.

This is Tracey Watson showing her “Respect” on the tee, Anzac Day!

Donning her grandmother’s homemade poppy, and, as a homage to the late Barry Humphries, a special pair of glasses!

Our women players (and 2 men), after their difficult golf rounds, joined in the traditional ‘raising of the glass’ in remembrance of those who have fallen.

Lest We Forget.

Women Vets

Hi all,

Just a reminder that the Womens’ vets day on 4/5/23 is a 3 person Ambrose.
Let’s hope the weather is kind to us!

Regards,

Lorraine

Great shot played on the 13th today

Bob Neilson played a wonderful shot on the 13th today to almost record an ace, finishing 1 cm from the hole. No fancy cap, bottle of wine nor Honour Board listing. What a difference a centimetre makes!

Still, I suppose Bob will just have to be content with the ‘supershot’ cash!

Well played Bob.

2 person Ambrose this Saturday

Rules for a 2 Person AMBROSE COMPETITION

Handicap: 1/4 combined handicaps (Show individual handicaps on card)
Both players are to tee off on all holes and play all shots.
Select the best ball to play and mark its position. Decide as you walk to the balls which ball to play so as to keep play flowing. Both players will play from this spot. Both players place their ball within one club length (10cm on Putting Green) of the selected ball (or mark) and play their next shot. If the position of the selected ball is in the rough, a sand bunker or a penalty area then the both players balls must be placed and played from the rough or same penalty area or sand bunker. This process continues until the team has completed the hole.
Six tee shots from each team member must be used and shown on the scorecard.
The scorecard must be signed by one team member as player and by the marker.

If you are in a group of 3 then the third person plays stableford and marks your card.

Male Veterans Championship next Monday

If you have played 3 or more Veteran events since last May then you are elligible to contest the Veterans Championship. A stroke round will determine the Veterans Champion and the nett Champion. As this is a championship all players must complete each hole. There is no 9 shot limit.
