News from the Greens Committee – May

Members may be aware that we have an active greens committee at the course that meet monthly to discuss course matters with our Head Greenkeeper.

Last month we were informed of the purchase of new yellow coloured flagsticks which will be rolled out onto the course when they arrive. The design of these sticks make it impractical to continue the use of the position balls on the sticks as they have a bulge in their middle.

The committee decided to trial having no position markers on the sticks for a month to guage member opinion.

Apparently the colour of the new flagsticks will make it easier to see their position on the greens.

If this is not popular, one suggestion is to place different coloured flags on the sticks similar to what happens at many other clubs to help with flagstick sighting on the greens.

Please be patient and wait till the end of May.

Clearing of tree overhang on tee shutes

The committee and the greenkeeper are well aware of the issues regarding the overgrowth of trees on the course. Plans have been arranged but due to operational restrictions concerning staff shortages and injuries and retirements it has been impossible to start this work during the growth season. With colder weather soon approaching it will be possible for this work to commence.

Volunteering at the course

We are hoping to get together a group of interested members to help with various aspects of course maintenace on a regular basis. If you have time on your hands and wish to contribute to your club then please be alert for upcoming notices asking for your assistance.

Some things we can all do to assist

I am a firm believer in thinking that the course should be in a better state after every round we play.

This can be achieved by properly repairing pitch marks on greens and divot holes on fairways. Don’t just repair your own, look for others as well and fix them too.

Easy to do!
