Course makes remarkable recovery

Clearly the work of our staff and volunteers is having a profound affect on the condition of the course.

On Tuesday and Wednesday many volunteers helped clean up the fairways. As well as the many members listed below I noticed quite a few more out there who didn’t put their names down in the volunteers book and the club wishes to thank them as well.

Thanks to two of our new members Peter Wilson, and Brian Cox for coming along and getting involved.

All of your efforts are most appreciated. It makes me proud to be a member of Jamberoo Golf Club.

Some parts are still very wet of course and quite a bit of debris is piled under trees. There is much still to do but a great start has been made.

Our greenstaff have been working to prepare the course for possible play on the weekend. Lets hope it is possible.

More news about this tomorrow.

Thanks also to those members who have donated to the club from their trophy accounts into the flood fund. This money will be put to good use in assisting the repairs to the pathways and bridge approaches and the removal of the tonnes of debris.

An important Concern – Heart Issues.

Information supplied by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/heart-stroke-vascular-diseases/hsvd-facts/contents/summary-of-coronary-heart-disease-and-stroke/coronary-heart-disease

Recently there have been a few instances of members suffering from heart complaints both on the course and at home and it is worthwhile to remind our members of the symptoms.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when there is a narrowing or blockage in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle. There are 2 major clinical forms – heart attack (also known as acute myocardial infarction) and angina. CHD is largely preventable, as many of its risk factors are modifiable.

A heart attack is a medical emergency and is a blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle. A heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the heart. Without blood, tissue loses oxygen and dies.

Symptoms include tightness or pain in the chest, neck, back or arms, as well as fatigue, lightheadedness, abnormal heartbeat and anxiety. Women are more likely to have atypical symptoms than men.

Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes and cardiac rehabilitation to medication, stents and bypass surgery.

Symptoms of a heart attack can appear a month or more in advance. Chest pain, sleep problems, and unusual fatigue are among the most commonly reported warning signs.

If you should notice any symptoms then please visit your doctor and seek medical assistance.

Course on the way back.

Very good roll up at the course this morning. Jamberoo members again out there and helping.

The front 9 is now pretty well cleaned up apart from the piles of debris being picked up by the ground staff, and debris in areas that won’t affect play.

For those there I apologise but a full listing of names of attendees is not available but it is great to see so many put on their gloves and get involved.

The irrigation system is still out and keeps tripping due to having been under water. It just needs to dry out so Nick can wash the silt off the greens.

The work continues tomorrow from 8 am.

Jamberoo Members again show that special spirit and willingness to help out.

April Flood Event 2024

This devastating flood has caused the most damage to the course in living memory, even greater than the 2013 tornado.

I am heartbroken by the damage but my spirits have been uplifted by the willingness of the Jamberoo members to help out and get involved.

Greenkeeper Nick is focusing on getting greens and tees sorted and the irrigation system back up and running. Both the pump shed at 17 and the bore on 10 are out of action. Nick needs the water back on so he can hose off the silt on greens.

There is significant damage to the course and to some of the bridge approaches. There are big chunks out of greens (particularly 1 & 3), lots of signposts, bench seats etc that have been washed out onto other parts of the course. The protective screen shelter on 15 has gone, some of the protective lattice on 15 tee is gone, the gravel off bridge approaches and paths is all over fairways and rough. Pathways around the course have been washed away. A car has been washed down the Minnamurra River and now sits near the 13th green in the river itself. I am told that the driver was rescued and is safe.

Some of the small drain bridges e.g. the one between 17 & 2 have been washed away and deposited out on the course etc. An engineer has been organised to come and assess the bridge on the 4th.

All that said the fairways pretty much just need the debris raked up and removed and they will be back to normal pretty quickly.

Our first volunteer to arrive today was Peter Hughes followed by Bob and Joe Neilson and Gus O’Brien who were cleaning up the 5th fairway, Bruce Mitchie and Phil Hahn also showed up a little later to join this crew. They managed to reasonably clean up the 5, 6, 8, & 9 fairways.

This is where our volunteers can help Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly Thursday and Friday as well.

We could use plenty of volunteers over the next couple of days.
I think a start time of 8:00 tomorrow for volunteers is suitable.

If you can make it your help will be very much appreciated. Bring gum boots, gloves, rakes and shovels.

Neil Riley, Kiama Mayor, has been contacted and we hope to get free green waste disposal at Kiama tip for the rest of April.

2024 Flood Damage Repair Fund

Thank you to those members who have already contacted the club indicating they would donate their trophy account balances into the “2024 Flood Damage Repair Fund” to help in the repairs to the course caused by the flood.

Your desire to help is most appreciated.

2024 Flood Damage Repair Fund

As a result of the devastating flood that hit the course on Friday night and Saturday morning, one of our members has kindly and anonymously donated the full balance of his Trophy Account back to the Club.

He writes: “The damage to the course following the flood 36 hours ago is devastating and will be a significant and costly impost on the Club and its members. While my 2023-2024 golf year has not been covered in glory, I would like to donate the full balance of my trophy account (about $250) back to the Club in the hope it can be the initial donation to a 2024 Flood Damage Repair Fund to be used at the Board’s discretion. If the stories I hear and based on reports in the Daily Cow of many members with significant trophy account balances are correct, then I would like to challenge others make a similar (or smaller) donation. If another 79 active men and women members donated an average of $250 of their trophy accounts back to the Club, it would raise a much needed $20,000 towards the course repair bill.”

Those members who wish to support this initiative please contact the club office when it re-opens.

Your support would be very much appreciated.

Volunteers needed to help in the clean up.

Much help will be needed as there is significant damage to the course. Please come along each morning to help our greenstaff firstly pile up the rubbish and to assist where possible.

Gloves, gum boots, rakes and shovels would be helpful.

Please meet near the golfshop between 7.30 and 8.

Thanking you in anticipation.
