AUSTRALIAN OPEN FOOTGOLF SUCCESS

FootGolf AO 18th hole

Monies been counted and the weekend made over $6000 profit for the club with minor disruptions to normal operations. Social golfers were on the course by 2:30 every day.

FOOTGOLFS’ ORGANISER MEMO: I have been really taken out of my comfort zone in organising this but have had great Board Support—most freezing their butts of as Marshalls.

A big THANK YOU to the over 50 volunteers and Sponsors who as a member said made it the “BEST EVENT EVER”. It really was something special. This is what our club is about—volunteers doing the best they can, to keep our fees the BEST VALUE IN THE ILLAWARRA.

A special thanks to  John Duncan (ex Greenkeeper) who inspired me to keep going with FootGolf—he could see the potential as a secondary form of income for the club. Martin has continued the good work—even changing FootGolf holes in response to Overseas expertise. Shaun did his usual great artistic work, we are so lucky to have you– amazing to watch.

The 6 month trial of FootGolf is up next week. Have a good think on how it has affected you personally . Any comments or suggestions—good or bad put in writing in Suggestion Book near the computer terminal in Golfers Lounge, or write a letter to the board. This will assist the board in upcoming descisions.

Jim Butt: Jamberoo’s affable and very experienced PGA Teaching Professional

Jim Butt Teaching
“Gentelman” Jim Butt (right) shares his vast knowledge with a budding golfer at Jamberoo Golf Club

By JGC Daily Cow Special Correspondent Arthur Bosanquet

Jim Butt, a member of the PGA of Australia for over 30 years, is the golf “Teaching Professional” at Jamberoo Golf Club (JGC).  He is at JGC every Tuesday and Friday, and offers a wide range of services to enhance your golfing experience; these include teaching for individuals or groups (both for members of JGC and non-members), golf club repairs, and the sale and fitting of new golf clubs. He can be contacted on 0402 262 641, or in person at JGC on either Tuesdays or Fridays, where he can be found in his shed, on the practice range (between the 18th and 10th fairways) or in the players’ lounge discussing anything golf (and/or any other topic) with anyone who is free.

I RECENTLY had the pleasure of sitting down with Jim in the players’ lounge of JGC, where we chatted about the services he provides at JGC, and his life as a golf Teaching Professional. His quiet, friendly manner was evident from the start of our conversation, and was confirmed to me by many members of JGC who described him variously as being “knowledgeable”, “a lovely gentleman”, “friendly”, “affable”, “obliging and generous” and “efficient”. Interestingly, he described golf as being “an extremely simple game, in which a stationary ball is hit, played by people who want to complicate it”.

TEACHING. Jim is able to provide advice on the rules of golf and their interpretation, advice on course management while playing golf, and swing improvement. It was refreshing to learn Jim, as a coach, does not believe in trying to change a player’s swing to copy that of a well-known professional. Instead, he aims to “tweak the swing the player already has”, and help them become the best golfer they can be. Jim is happy to provide lessons for children or adults as either individuals or groups of 4 – 6 (max) people.

GOLF CLUB REPAIRS. Jim is available for repairs to grips, shafts and club heads. Be prepared, however, as he may suggest your club is beyond repair, and trying to “fix’ your favourite club may not be in your best golfing interests.

NEW GOLF CLUBS. If you are thinking about purchasing a new set of golf clubs, Jim is the person to see. He is able to provide a wide range of golf clubs, including Titleist, Ping, TaylorMade, Callaway, Mizuno, Srixon, Infinity, Nikent and PGA. Jim described the club shaft as being “the most important part of a golf club, without a shadow of a doubt; it is the engine room of a club”. Having the right shaft significantly improves your chances of playing consistent golf, but conversely, if the shaft is not correct for you, the game of golf becomes that much more difficult. Trying to decide what clubs to buy can become extremely confusing given the huge number of clubs on the market, and over 100 different shafts available of varying lengths, compositions, flexes, weights and kick points. Jim therefore suggests “club fitting” can be extremely beneficial prior to purchasing new clubs. He told me that if someone is going to outlay money for a set of clubs “make sure they fit you”.

CLUB FITTING. In a club fitting session, rather than getting you to hit balls into a net and use a computer to provide your swing and ball flight statistics, Jim watches you hit balls in real life on the practice fairway. With his vast experience Jim is able to assess what would be the most appropriate shaft length and flex, lie angle of the club head, grip size and swing weight for you as an individual. After discussion with you, a decision can be made as to what would be the most suitable grip, brand and model of club for you, and what would be the most ideal composition of your new set of clubs; for example, irons versus hybrids (or rescues) versus lofted fairway woods. Jim is then able to source those clubs at a very competitive price. Jim currently charges $50 for “club fitting”, but that cost is deducted from the purchase price of the golf clubs if bought through him.

As a word of warning, Jim commented that when buying golf clubs through the Internet, the specifics of the club shaft (the most important part of a club) cannot be guaranteed, and therefore may not be the actual club you ordered or required. As a result you will need to change your swing to get the best out of your new, but different, club(s). And you then wonder why you can’t hit the ball as far, or you now have a hook or a slice!

ELK GOLF BUGGIES. If you are in the market for a new motorised golf buggy, Jim is the local stockist for the lightweight but robust ELK buggies.

Jim’s long career as a teaching pro

Jim commenced his career as a trainee golf professional “way back” at the Yowani Country Club in the ACT, before heading to the prestigious Royal Sydney Golf Club where he was employed as its Teaching Professional for about three years. Before arriving at JGC in 2005, Jim had gained more experience working at various other golf clubs around Sydney, as well as teaching full time at both the Barton Park and Port Macquarie Driving Ranges. During his younger years Jim attended many professional development courses and seminars, usually held at the Sanctuary Cove Resort, and usually presented by “name” overseas (usually American) golf teachers. Jim commented he was disappointed local Australian teachers were often overlooked to present these courses, as he considered them to have just as much expertise.

When he first arrived in the region almost 16 years ago Jim had the busy task of being the teaching professional at Jamberoo Golf Club, Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club and Gerringong Golf Club.

Jim never played on the touring professional golf circuit because, in his words, he “was not a good enough player”. However his passion had always been teaching.

Now that he is semi-retired from teaching golf, Jim has the opportunity to follow his other passion, namely playing social golf with his wife and friends both locally and elsewhere, wherever there may be a golf course. He is confident of the long-term prosperity of JGC, especially if the development of local juniors is encouraged and supported. Jim, with the very able assistance of Phil Lewis, has been conducting junior golf clinics every Friday afternoon during school term at JGC for some years. Two years ago he increased his commitment by introducing a golf clinic for pupils at Jamberoo Primary School in the first school term each year, and this has continued with the help of Phil and several other members of JGC.

As well as teaching at JGC, Jim also teaches at Worrigee Driving Range on Thursdays.

Thank you, Jim, for being such a wonderful asset for JGC, and we look forward to seeing you at JGC for many years to come.

May 2015 Vets Newsletter

4th May 2015 Competition
This was scheduled to be the day of our Vets Championship however due to the very wet weather immediately prior to the day, the course was extremely heavy and the course superintendent recommended that no carts be used on the day. Many players had withdrawn prior to Monday and we considered that if the weather was better, they would have competed in the Championship. For this reason it was decided to defer the event to next month when the weather will hopefully be more amenable to the members in general.

Even though conditions were very ordinary we still had 44 starters and the early indications were that the scores were likely to be ordinary as well. There were reports of drives right down the centre of the fairway just disappearing as a result of the wet conditions, so when Tony Rodriguez came in with 36 points we all thought that was going to be the winning score. But as Tony remarked “Rip is still out there”. As it turned out Tony’s fears were realised when Steve eventually finished.

Rip had “ripped” up the course with an amazing 42 points playing off his +2 handicap. On checking Steve’s scorecard he carded 10 birdies and one bogey with a total of 20 putts (including a three putt on the 3rd) during the round for a scratch score of 58 (Note for myself – “give Steve the benefit of my own putting prowess about how to nail those troublesome 10 footers on the 3rd!”). An absolutely amazing round! The rest of the winners were:

1st S Rippon 42 Pts
2nd Tony Rodriguez 36 Pts
3rd Peter Waterman 34 Pts (RV)
4th Mal Garratt 33 Pts (c/b)

NTP 3rd Tony Rodriguez 750 cms
NTP 9th Not won
NTP 11th Al Thomas 1120 cms
D&P 8th Pat Paris 74 cms
Supershot 7th John Pringle 170 cms
Balls to 31 Pts

21st April 2015 Competition
The course was starting to dry out and the scores reflected the better course conditions. The day was won by the ever consistent Tony Rodriguez on a countback from his partner on the day Mick Farmilo. We had 29 starters today which was a little down on numbers due to a clash with the Trevor Bell Shield and the Week of Golf event at Port Kembla. The winners on the day were:

1st Tony Rodriguez 38 Pts (c/b)
2nd Tony Farmilo 38 Pts (c/b)
3rd R Garner 38 Pts (RV)

NTP 3rd Ken Bradley 291 cms
NTP 9th John Ellsmore 210 cms
NTP 11th Tony Rodriguez 26 cms
D&P 8th M Smith 400 cms (RV)
Supershot 7th Stuart Irvine 34 cms
Balls to 36 Pts

NSWVGA Medal
The NSWVGA has agreed to provide a Medal for both Men & Women to the Illawarra VGA Group 3 and for this year only, 2 X $50 vouchers will be supplied by the NSWVGA. Two Runner-up prizes of $25.00 will also be provided by the IVGA.

The qualifying round will be played at Jamberoo on Monday 5th October 2015, our regular Vets day. Only Jamberoo members are entitled to participate in this event and it will be run in conjunction with an individual Stableford. The event is open to both men and women and the top three placegetters for both men and women on the day will be eligible to play off for the Medal. Other placegetters names will be recorded in case the qualifiers are unavailable for the playoff. To be eligible, both Men & Women MUST BE FINANCIAL MEMBERS OF THE NSWVGA.

The playoff will be held at Shoalhaven Heads on Monday 9th November 2015, tee off between 8.00 to 8.45am, green fees $16.00, carts $30.00 ($15.00 shared).

Trevor Bell Shield
The first round of our title defence was held at Kiama on Monday 18th May in good conditions and it was the Kiama boys who took the day at their home course with 204 points followed by The Grange with 192 and Wollongong with 184 points. Jamberoo are sitting in 5th position on 169 points. Our best scores on the day was from our captain Ray Orr with 31 points and Geoff Reynolds with 30 points.

Obviously not the best start to the competition but if memory serves me correctly, we had a similar start at Kiama last year but we kept chipping away (sorry about that) at the lead and in the end we ran out comfortable winners by about 25 points. So the fightback starts at the Links on Monday 22nd June.

At a recent meeting of the IVGA it was decided to play the game that was rained out from The Grange in April in the vacant month of July and the rescheduled date at The Grange is Monday 6th July. The nomination form for The Links should be on the notice board by this Saturday.

April 2015 Vets Newsletter

14th April 2015 Competition
Due to the Easter break, the Vets day was pushed back a week to the 14th April. A number of our Vets have been away on their annual pilgrimage to Wellington and I have been told that our own Kenny Dickson cleaned up in the men’s comp and Betty Dillon from Nowra won the ladies. As a result of some of our members being away, combined with the Easter weekend, the numbers for today’s comp were down to 45 and the winners were:
1st A Christoforo (The Grange) 37 Pts (c/b)
2nd Brian Goodhew 37 Pts (c/b)
3rd Toby Bartle 37 Pts
4th Lewis Fuller 36 Pts (c/b)

NTP 3rd Not won
NTP 9th John Ellsmore 143 cms
NTP 11th George Evans 306 cms
D&P 8th Warren Joannou (Links) 115 cms
Supershot 7th Lance Fredericks 248 cms
Balls to 32 Pts

21st April 2015 Competition
Play was cancelled due to heavy rain.

Mollymook trip 11th May 2015
If anyone is interested in travelling to Mollymook for our annual clash on Monday 11th May, can you please put your name on the list in the starters shed.

Lake Macquarie Classic
This tournament is to be held at the Toronto Country Club from Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July 2015. The nomination form will be in the Vets folder in the Golfers Lounge area.

Gerringong Golf Club
This is a reminder that Gerringong holds its Vet days for both men and ladies on the second Monday of every month as well as the 5th Tuesday when this occurs.

Trevor Bell Shield
The good news is that we are still the leading club, but we are still tied with everyone else. The day was scheduled to be played on Monday 21st April at The Grange but due to flooding on the front nine, the day’s competition was abandoned. There is a possibility that the round might be rescheduled to the vacant month of July, and this will be decided during the next meeting of the Illawarra Veteran Golfers Association.

Next month’s competition will be at Kiama on Monday 18th May 2015. The nomination sheet is on the board outside the starters shed. If anyone is interested in playing in the team, can you please put your name on the list because it is important to have reserves that we can call on from time to time. The shield has finally been mounted in the golfer’s lounge beneath the “results” screen in the golfer’s lounge.
