Some Intersting Facts

A member during the week asked me if many people manage 9 points or better over our 3 closing holes. He had recently achieved the feat and was wondering if many others had done so as well.

This triarchy of holes, 16, 17 and 18, is sometimes referred to as the ‘Jamberoo Triangle’ not because of its geometric properties but as the destroyer of many good rounds. A place where good scores are lost!

A quick look at the stableford results so far this year seems to confirm that this triumvirate is indeed a place to be very weary of.

Of the 1200 or so stableford rounds played this year only 3 have managed 9 points. 1/4 of 1%!

I also noted that only about 20 rounds had 8 points.

The message is clear. Do well in the “triangle” and you will gain much on the rest of the field.

Monday Veterans event deferred due to WGI Opening Day

Just a reminder that there will be no veterans golf on Monday 20th of February. The course will be used for the WGI Opening Day. Both the first and 10th tees will be used for this important event.

Veterans are invited to play in the Wednesday competition on the 22nd where a special ‘Vets only’ grade will be created. For $2 extra they can also play in the 4 ball event held in conjunction on that day.

Heavy rain closes course temporarily

110ml of water fell on the course in the last 24 hours and some localised flooding has occured. The 7th hole has become an ‘island green’ in a worrying development.

The course has been closed temporarily to give that water a chance to run off and perhaps will be ok by the weekend if no further rain occurs. Further updates as they become available.

Mens Pennants face serious challenges this weekend.

This weekend our 3 Mens’ Pennant teams face make-or-break matches.

The C Pennant encounter the always strong Kiama outfit at Kiama. A good performance will set up the rest of their season. A poor result and they will be chasing their tail. We have a very talented team who I am sure will put last weekends result behind them and give a good accounting of themselves. All teams in this division have suffered a win at home and a loss away so you can see the importance of an away win.

Also the ‘Town & Country’ Cup is up for grabs. Extra motivation to do well.

The White Horse Cup Division 1 team sit atop the table after 2 rounds and travel to the St Georges Basin Country Club to play against the big-hitting Gerringong team. A very important match to keep the momentum rolling along.

The White Horse Cup Division 3 team suffered a narrow loss to Kiama last Sunday and cannot afford another loss. They play the Shoalhaven Heads team at Nowra who also are reeling after a round 1 loss.

Cart Usage

For safety and insurance purposes the Board would like to remind our members about a few restrictions on the use of our golf carts: two people maximum per cart; children (under 18) are not permitted to drive golf carts on any part of golf club property including the carpark; standing on the back of the cart is not permitted. These requirements are for the safety of all members and visitors to our club.

Oaks Automotive Eagles Nest is won

Congratulations to John Anthony who hit his shot on the third to 42 cm to win the Eagles Nest Jackpot of 45 golf balls! It was a great shot that covered the flag all the way.John almost had another ace on the 11th as well in a great ball-striking day.

A cool $135 worth of balls to John.

John Childs hit one close as well but soon received another reward with a shot to 40 cm on the 13th to win the supershot jackpot of $112. Another great shot hit the exact distance required although it may not have become airborn!

Round two Pennants

Oaks Automotive Mens Pennant teams suffer setback

In today’s matches only one of our 3 teams has recorded a win.

Congratulations to the White Horse Cup division 1 team who defeated Shoalhaven Heads 5 -2 at Sussex Inlet.

The C Pennant team crashed today losing 4.5 to 0.5 in an away game against The Links Shell Cove.

The White Horse Cup division 3 team lost a close encounter with Kiama 4-3 at Bowral.

White Horse Cup Magpies

Alan Jones lost 3/2

Rob Young squared his match

Matt Ross squared his match

Larry Kent won 3/2

Jeff Draper won 2 up

Don Thompson won 2 up

Phil Gosling won 2 up.

A very pleasing result against the strong Shoalhaven Heads team which sets up the rest of the season.

C Pennant division 1

Graham Ricketts lost 5/3

Tom Zimmermann lost 7/6

Chris Leckey lost 3/2

Mal Hoy squared his match

Ken Bradley lost 3/1

Although it was a loss an important ½ point was gained which may prove crucial later in the season. The C Pennant play home and away and it is always difficult to beat the opposition at their home as it proved today. The Links had the same problem last week at our home.

Next week’s match is against Kiama at Kiama for the “Town and Country Cup”, the annual trophy contested between Jamberoo and Kiama in the C Pennant.

White Horse Cup Cowpats

Arthur Bosanquet lost 3/2

Lee Hayward lost 4/3

Anthony Smith won 4/3

Angus Pinkstone lost 3/1

Peter Hackett won 6/4

Peter Francis lost 2/1

Rob Mclean won 5/4

Playing against the strong Kiama team at the picturesque Bowral course, a very close tussle was expected and delivered.

In the end Kiama was able to win the crucial match and record a 4-3 victory over our gallant team.

February Calendar of Events

Vets please note Monday 20th of February. No vets golf that day.

First Veterans BBQ Day for 2023 receives good reviews

It was pleasing to see the smiles on the faces of the Jamberoo Vets after the 2 person Ambrose last Monday. The object of these days is to encourage each and every Jamberoo Vet member to enjoy competition and fellowship with friends and fellow vets on our beautiful course at a special discounted rate as a reward for their support.

I strongly believe that all of our Vets should share in the benefits of Monday Veteran Golf through these shotgun starts and BBQ’s. Judging by the number of players after the game enjoying the camaraderie with their mates we have made a good start.

The best gross score recorded on the day was a fantastic 67 by the wily pair of David Piccirillo and Kevin O’Rourke which also gave them a winning nett score of 57.5. The two Mal’s, Hoy and Gane, managed second on a countback with a score of 61.5 over Col and Jenn Owers. Phil Thompson and Tim Reilly grabbed fourth place with 62.25.

Some excellent scoring on the day with a nett score of 64.75 needed to win a ball.

Some members wondered why there were no NTP’s. We will include them next time! Sorry!

And Norbert won a prize again in the raffle!

Warning – Danger Will Robinson!

It is very important, for insurance purposes, that only people with a Driver’s Licence drive our carts.

Certainly you may take a child in the cart with you but they are not allowed to drive the vehicle.

Some might say, “What harm can it be”? Well if something does go wrong then serious injury and trouble may well be the result.

Just don’t do it!

News from Jamberoo GC

Loose Golf Balls Around the Course

Lately I have been receiving complaints from members about other players unwittingly (I hope) picking up a ball or playing the wrong ball.

During competition play if you see a golf ball just lying there DON’T PICK IT UP.

AND always check that it is your ball before you hit it.

It may well be the ball of another player in the comp. Pick up that ball and the owner will suffer a stroke and distance penalty for a lost ball, wrecking their round.

As a general rule, in competitions, leave any loose ball where it is.

Some of our members can hit prodigious distances and hit balls to where you may not suspect them.

Men’s Pennant Season Commences

Thank you to OAKS AUTOMOTIVE for their continued support of our Men’s Pennant teams.

Round 1 of the Men’s Pennants proved to be successful for our Jamberoo teams.

The C Pennant team, playing at home, were victorious against the Links Shell Cove 4 matches to 1 and the White Horse Cup division 1, the Magpies, playing at Moss Vale against St George’s Basin, tied their match 3.5 each.

White Horse Cup Division 1

Magpie Captain, Larry Kent, was very pleased with his team’s performance and reported that every player played well against a very good opposition with their well balanced line-up.

Rob Young won 2/1

Alan Jones lost on the 18th

Matt Ross lost 3/1

Larry Kent won 3/1

Jeff Draper won 6/5

Don Thompson squared his match gaining the important 1/2 point for the team

Phil Gosling went down 4/3.

A tough match and a very good start to the season.

C Pennant Division 1

Team Captain Chris Leckey reports:

Jamberoo golf club was in pristine condition for the opening game of the season. This year’s team is made up of a combination of experience and some very good new team members on low handicaps who are all keen to win this pennant.

Results went this way...

Ken Bradley won 4/3

Mal Hoy won 4/3

Chris Leckey won 9/7

Pat Paris won 5/3

Wayne Griffiths lost 2 down

Can we beat Links Shellcove on their turf next week? ……we will certainly be trying.

Our other team members are Tom Zimmerman, Graeme Ricketts and Bob Neilson.

Memorial Day a Grand Success

It was hot and humid but 139 members and visitors enjoyed the day in rememberance of our lost friends. $270 was donated through the sausage sizzle and $556 donated via the green fees to be spent on purchasing and erecting some new course seating. The families of our lost comrades can then put plaques on these chairs to remember their loved one.

The competition was hot and the two sectional starts allowed us to give AM and PM prizes as well as overall Gross and Nett winners. A ‘Bradman’s’ Trophy was also awarded to the team who came first at the other end.

Nett winners D Ransom, S Oppert, D Oppert & A Ransom  51 nett

Gross winners C Owers, T Lowe, B McGlinchey & R Chilby 57

AM winners V Byrnes, A Ball, D Garcia & R Bottom  53 nett

PM winners M Rodgers, P Rodgers, J Spears & K Lardner  53.5 nett

Bradman’s Trophy J Brand, D Brand, A Wight & M Cook  62.125 nett

Balls to 54.875

Somebody tell Col that we are playing to the golf holes please! Col’s tee shot on the 5th had his team mates overjoyed.

GOLFNSW/Illawarra Pennants commence tomorrow with the C Pennant and the WHC Magpies playing their first round matches.

Play well and good luck.
