WHC Green Team Hit Soft Underbelly of Bowral 4.5 to 1.5

The score does not reveal the true nature of the see sawing contest with all players behind at one stage.

Scott Hainsworth demonstrated why he is the most feared number 1 player in the WHC, staging a brilliant and tactical come from behind win with two holes to go to secure the GT win. The tactical aspect came from demanding a playing shirt a size to small to offput the opposition perception of Golf’s fitness parameters. Matt ‘the Bomber’ Tedeschi played ‘Ducks and Drakes’ with his opponent also coming from behind to secure a well-earned win. The  Jamberoo ‘Cowpats’ most consistent hatchet man, Mark Cassel had the Bowral Cravat tie tight around his opposition throat early on and didn’t let go.

Brian O’Hare, the WHC Cup’s ‘Mr Smooth and Steady’ maintained his consistent rhythm to square his match almost holing out on the last to secure the full points. Shane Townsend, hit the ball well, in fact better than his opponent, but freakish putting by his opponent left Shane having to score off his chips into the green. The ‘new boy’ on Team GT, Phil Adams, also pulled on his past sporting skills to ensure he stayed in front so Bowral’s last ‘cravat of hope’ had disappeared.

GT’s, a truly champion effort on Sunday at Bowral, the killer instinct and never say die attitude won on the day. Next Sunday we have Larry Kent back after fine tuning his game in Bali, and myself after my administrative sabbatical at Bowral.

Round 1 C Pennant Report 31-1-2016

vs  Port Kembla

Jamberoo 3 def Port Kembla 2

The “Cs” have kicked off the new season with a solid win over the strong Port team. This year’s team consists of Tim Young, Tom Zimmermann, Boyd Sylvester, Tony McRae, Wayne Griffiths, Chris Leckey and Greg Tarrant.Tim, our number 1 today, played against a very experienced pennants player who has represented 3 Illawarra clubs in C Pennants over the years. Tim went down 3/2 in a tightly fought affair.Wayne Griffith’s recent good form was hard to repeat against his opponent. A close match finishing 2/1 down.

Chris won his game with a par on the 18th. It was nearly all over on the 17th but my opponent let me back in for the 1up win. Tom usually plays number 1 or 2 but we tactically put him at 4 and he didn’t falter beating Ports Captain 3/2. Boyd was keen to play pennants this year, especially being last year’s Single Matchplay winner. He gave us the perfect start with a 2/1 win.

With this year’s home and away format for the C Pennant comp we all realized we needed to win our home games to be any chance, so well done boys. There is a lot of organising behind the scenes before the Pennants season starts. Thanks to Mike Harris for the shirts, Col Booth for the Caps. Bruce Hammond the starter and Anthony Smith, Tony McRae and Greg Tarrant for helping with the BBQ today.

C  Pennant Round 2 Report

vs  St Georges Basin

St Georges Basin + Jamberoo 2.5 Squared Match

Perfect conditions greeted us at The Basin today and our “T” Team was up to the challenge. Tom, Tim and Tony managed to get the team a valuable away point.

Tim won 5/4 vs SGBs Cpt. who was playing off 12. Tim’s putting was the difference and he won convincingly. Tom, aka “Young Buck” had another great win 3/1, leading all the way. Tony’s match finished square on the 18th hole. Battling cramps and his opponent coming home with a wet sail, Tony sank a 30 footer on 17 to ensure at least a squared match.

Last week’s winners Boyd and Chris need some bunker practice as they both went down 6/4 and 4/3.

Taking a point for the away square is a great result and we now look forward to our home game v The Links where our newest and patient team member Greg Tarrant debuts.

White Horse Cup REDS send scare through opposition with 6-0 thumping of Gibraltar.

While all other teams struggled to come to grips with our tight layout the Jamberoo REDS showed how to play our course. The unlucky victims were the gallant Gibraltar men from Bowral who travelled back up the mountain with their tails well and truly between their legs.

Brad Jackson, after his sabbatical last year, has returned with a very solid 3/1 win after having to cede 4 shots to his opponent. Peter Francis, also making a return to the White Horse Cup after several seasons in the C Pennant, was very much in form and crushed his opponent 7/6. Steve Jackson, fresh from last year’s triumph, easily accounted for his opponent 4/3.

New recruit, Andrew Ball, had a successful start to the season with a well-crafted 2/1 victory. Ken Bradley, also welcomed back into the Jamberoo Pennant fold, played a very good match to easily win 4/3. At number one, Arthur Bosanquet, an experienced match and pennant player, trailed early but found his rhythm to finish all over his opponent 6/5.

I would like to thank Tim of ‘Superior Meats on Addison’ for his sponsorship of the pre and after-game meals. All players commented on the great quality and taste of the sausages. They can be found at 20 Addison St Shellharbour and I recommend them to you if you are in the vicinity of Shellharbour.

It is a good start but the REDS are aware that one good performance doesn’t win the Pennant.

Next weekend’s game at Gibraltar against the vastly experienced Links Shell Cove team shapes as a critical game to our title aspirations. Experience will be necessary and Lance Fredericks with fill that category as he makes his season debut.

B Pennant Square Round 1 Match with Moss Vale

The conditions at the Grange were tough due to the ground being soft after a week of rain making the course play extremely long. Preferred lies through the green due to the length of rough which, while the same for both, did not reward the guys who hit a high percentage of fairways.

Captain Paul Hazeltine played number 5 in a tactical masterstroke and putted extremely well for a 5/3 victory. Pat Paris playing at number 4 came up against a seasoned B pennant player and went down 4/3. Jarrod Gehrmann played number 3 and played solidly for a 3/1 victory. He adds depth and strength to our squad and will be an asset to the team.

Adrian Bell played number 1 and came up against a solid opponent and with no luck, and with bunkers giving his opponent some lucky breaks, resulted in a 6/5 loss. Anthony Smith played at number 2 and played well to be a couple up early only to slip back to all square after 18. The match was all square coming to the difficult par 3 18th. His opponent hit a great shot to 3 metres. Anthony responded by missing the green slightly to the left. A great chip shot was able to apply the pressure as he was able to get it up and down for his par. After missing his birdie putt his opponent was left with a difficult 3 footer to square the match. He hit it solidly and made the putt to level the match.

It was a great result as each member of our team had a higher handicap than their opponent. On paper we looked the underdogs, but we ended up giving one of the stronger sides a real scare.

A great effort by all.

Paul Hazeltine
