Shellharbour junior golfer Tom Holz wins 2010 Jamberoo Men’s Open

Tom Holz accepts the 2010 Murray Tractors Jamberoo Open Trophy

SEVENTEEN year old Shellharbour golfer Tom Holz has won the 2010 Murray Tractors Jamberoo Men’s Open in a closely fought battle on Sunday (July 25).

In a day when no-one got the better of the picturesque Jamberoo course, the gun Illawarra junior golfer beat Wollongong’s Justin Craig and fellow Bonnie Doon member Aaron Keevers on a countback.

The threesome finished the round equal on two over par and all were ruing lost opportunities, particularly with putting in conditions that were not always ideal.

“I played all right. I got lucky on a few occasions. I just played my own game,” Holz said after accepting the winner’s trophy.

The annual Jamberoo event attracted 98 competitors from clubs across the Illawarra and Sydney.

Holz has won a number Illawarra junior and senior events and is now a member of the well respected Bonnie Doon Golf Club in Sydney.

Whilst it seemed to be mostly the younger brigade fighting it out for the major title – and for some it was Jamberoo’s tough, steeply sloping 18th green that finally decided the matter – the Nett Winner Trophy went to a player toward the other end of the spectrum.

Jamberoo’s Norbert Beringer streeted the field with a magnificent under the circumstances Nett 57.

The A Grade Nett Winner was Port Kembla’s Barry Chin with a 61, B Grade Gross Winner was N Porteous (St Georges Basin) 76, B Grade Nett Peter Francis (Jamberoo) 61, C Grade Gross Steve Robertson (Jamberoo) 85, C Grade Nett Alan Cox (Jamberoo) 66.

Jamberoo Golf Club President Phil Lewis said it was a great day of competition with scattered showers and damp conditions keeping the two under par course record safe.

Mr Lewis thanked the organisers and ground staff and the major sponsors Murray Tractors from Robertson and Fredericks Store Jamberoo.
