2014 Club Championship Rd 1 Summary

Thankfully we were met by blue skies but the course was very wet which made scoring difficult. Especially when chipping to the greens. Despite this some excellent scores were recorded.

The lowest nett score of the day was recorded by Phil Hellmund who fired a nett 63 off his 23 handicap to lead C grade by 4 in the gross and 5 in the nett.  Dale Atkins, Errol Stubbs, Paul Rogers and John Childs are in hot pursuit, but it remains to be seen which C grader will emerge from the pack to mount the charge at the leaders.

In B Grade Wayne Griffiths leads by one from Tim Young, with James Thompson, Darryl Campbell, Boyd Sylvester, Greg Tarrant and Ian Bradburn well placed. In the nett, James and Wayne are neck-to-neck with 66’s with Tim a further shot back. Many more B graders are within firing range so those leaders have to look back waiting for that inevitable charge.

In A Grade, the highlight was the eagle 2 recorded by Adrian Bell on the 16th, where he hit a 7 iron straight into the hole. After starting with 2 birdies Adrian was left lamenting what could have been after his 76 left him trailing Steve Rippon by 4. In the A Grade nett Adrian leads by 1 from Andrew Attard and Scott Hainsworth who both scored nett 70’s. Several others are close enough if they are good enough so it should be an interesting round next Saturday.

You may notice that the handicap grades for the club championships are different than that of the normal Saturday competitions. The reasoning behind this is historical and it enables us to maintain the link between the present and past championships. Each day’s competition will use our usual divisions when calculating nett scores.
