White Horse Cup Semi-final Report

After the closest of semi-finals I asked Chris Goodwin to write a report for the Daily Cow

“In a remarkable coincidence, the Cowpats and the Jamberoo #2 side were again tied 3 all after the individual matches, forcing the two Number 1’s into a sudden death play-off. This was the same result from last year and in a further coincidence the Cowpats pulled off a great victory against the Jamberoo #2 side after 3 extra holes.

The individual results were

Mark Cassel ( platinum Cowpat) def Greg Seymour 4 and 2
Scott Hainsworth (golden Cowpat) def Greg Tarrant 3 and 1
Bryan Nicoll (Jamberoo 2) def Matt Tedeschi 8 and 6
Col Booth (Chief Cowpat) def Johnny Bermudez 3 and 1
Gary Harvey (Jam 2) def Peter Francis 2 and 1
Chris Goodwin (Jam 2) def Steve Jackson 4 and 2

It was left to Mark and Greg to do battle and the nerves were evident on the first green with both players missing one metre putts that would have given them a win. It wasn’t until the third hole that the tide turned after Mark had hit a monster drive to be within 100m of the green, that Greg pulled his drive into the trees on the left of the fairway. An attempt to bend the ball around a tree did not go to plan and his shot connected with another tree and ricocheted out of bounds. His next attempt was 20 meters short of the green and his chip hit the hole but failed to drop for a 5. Mark’s approach was to the left of the green and his putt from the fringe came up about 4 meters short. But in true championship style, Mark rolled his next putt for a par to claim the play off.

Without detracting from Mark’s great effort, I know he would not mind me paying tribute to Greg’s courageous effort of playing with a pinched nerve in his back. Greg put in a tremendous effort but the golfing gods were not on his side on Sunday. I would also like to acknowledge the effort of the entire Jamberoo 2 team throughout the year, many of whom were playing pennants for the first time. I was very proud to say I was the captain of such a great bunch of guys. I would also like to wish the Cowpats, as well as our B and C grade teams the best of luck next Sunday at Shoalhaven Heads.
