Our inaugural second competition day on the 3rd Monday was finally held this month and we had 32 starters vying for a multitude of prizes. Due to the number of starters, there was only one division and the winners were:

2nd  Chris Goodwin     39 points (c/b)
3rd  John Deegan         39 points
NTP   3rd George Wells (650cm)

December Competition
Our first competition this month will be on Monday 1st December and will be a normal competition. Our Christmas competition day this year will be held on Monday 15th December simply because it is closer to Christmas. It will be a shotgun start and will be followed by a free sausage sizzle.

We recently received an anonymous donation of money to the Vets and it has been decided to apply the entirety of the donation to prizes for our final day of competition this year. We will have three grades on the day, regardless of the number of competitors, and there will be a first prize of a half ham in each grade. Please note that the hams can only be won by financial members of Jamberoo Vets. Visitors will be entitled to win the usual monetary prizes, but the hams will be for Jamberoo members only.

I will ensure there is an up to date list of financial members available on the day, so to be eligible to win any prizes please check the list before you tee off to ensure you are a current financial member to avoid any disappointment.

Uralla Week of Golf
I have received some nomination forms from the UGC for their week of golf from the 7th to the 10th April 2015. The forms will be placed in the folder in the Golfers Lounge.

Jamberoo Veterans win the Trevor Bell Shield

We went into the final round of the Trevor Bell Shield at The Grange with a somewhat comfortable lead over Port Kembla of 26 points, but when the chips are down funny things can happen. We also had the benefit of a largely unchanged team with the exception of Brian O’Hare who was off gallivanting interstate. Ray Orr gave his traditional stimulating rev up before we hit off and this week it was Pat Paris who had the pleasure of Ray’s continued encouragement throughout the day.

I was lucky to play with Peter Young who unfortunately had a horror start by only recording 1 point in the first three holes. But after we both got the benefit of another Ray Orr rev up on the 8th hole, we went on to each record a solid 19 points on the back for a total of 33 points for Peter and 35 for myself. All the more creditable for Peter who managed to snare a birdie and the odd par, so he had a great comeback from a not so good start.

After we returned to the clubhouse Ray and Pat Paris had also just finished and they managed 35 and 32 points respectively. A quick glance at the leader board revealed that two of Port’s players had scored 40 and 39 points, so they were still in with a chance unless we could post something formidable. Nerves were starting to get a bit frayed as we waited for the rest of the field to finish and it wasn’t long before Geoff Reynolds and Ron Chilby arrived with the news they had scored 38 and 35 points respectively.

With another couple of mid-range scores by Port, it became evident they did not have enough points to catch us on the day and when Karl Edlinger came in with 33 points, that was sufficient for Jamberoo to claim an initial win in the Trevor Bell Shield.

We again managed to score in excess of 200 points on the day (we scored greater than 200 points in six of the seven rounds throughout the year), but that was only good enough for fourth position on the day behind The Grange (225 points), Wollongong (219), Kiama (218), Jamberoo (209), Port Kembla (208), Links Shell Cove (207) and Russell Vale (197).

It was interesting to note that apart from Geoff Reynold’s terrific round of 38 points the rest of us managed to almost play to our handicaps with three of us scoring 35 and another two scoring 33. This result typified our performance during the year with one or two of us scoring well and the rest of the team making valuable contributions by playing close to their handicap. Overall it was a great team performance during the year where we displayed consistency with a bit of brilliance every now and then.

At the conclusion of the luncheon (I had the schnitzel with gravy and chips – yum!) the individual prizes for the day were awarded and while we didn’t feature among the leaders, Ray Orr managed to claim the NTP on the 7th with 198cm. This was followed by the presentation of the Shield which was gratefully accepted by our captain Ray. In his acceptance speech Ray acknowledged the hospitality of each of the clubs when they hosted their round and of the organisers. Ray concluded by saying that we had lost Neville Hutchins during the year and that one of Neville’s goals since its inception was to win the Shield, he was dedicating our win to Neville. Nice one Ray.

The Shield is to be engraved with today’s result and returned to Jamberoo over the next few weeks.

JGC Veterans Report – October 2014

October Competition

This month’s competition was down on numbers due to a clash with the Trevor Bell Shield, but there were still 67 hardy souls who teed off on an overcast morning. Luckily the rain held off for the duration of the competition.

The winners for this month were:

Division 1                                                                             Division 2

Phil Hahn                  41 points                               P Waterman(Grange)    45 points

Al Thomas (c/b)       38 points                              Reg Curnow                       42 points

D Turner(Grange)    34 points                              Laurie Fogarty                   40 points

The trial of an additional monthly Vets comp at Jamberoo on the 3rd Monday of the month was postponed this month but will definitely commence next month on the 17th November. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

Membership Renewals

Due to the clash of the October competition with the Trevor Bell Shield I was unable to be present to collect membership fees for the 2014/15 year. My thanks to all those members who have paid their money to the girls in the office. I will ensure I am at the course early on Monday 3rd November so if you know anyone who hasn’t yet renewed their membership, can you please let them know.

Seaside and The Valley Tournament

I just wanted to give you all a reminder about our inaugural tournament commencing on 24th November. The official cut off date is the 10th November, so if you are interested in playing you can obtain an entry form from the starters shed or by contacting either Lance, Stuart or myself.

There are some great prizes on offer for the five divisions (3 men and 2 ladies), such as $100 for 1st place each day in each division, with second receiving $50 and 3rd receiving $30. The 54 hole event winners in men and ladies will receive $125, second $75 and third $50. There will also be plenty of NTPs  and drive and pitch holes.

We will be running raffles beforehand with some great prizes, such as a voucher from Terralong Terrace in Kiama for two nights accommodation to the value of $440, a voucher from East Beach Caravan Park to the value of $600, a set of ladies wet weather gear to the value of $140 (kindly donated by Jim Butt) and dinner for two at Jamberoo pub to the value of $60.

I mentioned in a previous newsletter that we might need some volunteers to help on the two days of competition at Jamberoo (Monday and Thursday) so if you are available, can you please obtain a form from the starters shed and let us know. Help will be needed for starters, spotters, rangers, scorers and that all important position of head chef in the soon to be completed BBQ area.

Trevor Bell Shield

It was an early start at Wollongong and the clouds certainly looked ominous over the escarpment. Captain Ray decided that for today’s comp he would accompany Ron Chilby and not Brian O’Hare, “just so I could spread some inspiration throughout the team” said Ray. “I thought I would partner someone other than Brian because Brian’s game is now at a level that is beyond description” added Ray. Noone who has seen Brian play recently was prepared to disagree with Ray’s assessment.

Both myself and Ron had a good day scoring 44 and 42 points respectively and Ron clearly benefited from Ray’s company and inspirational talks throughout the day. We were ably backed up by Ed Klein (36 points) and the ever consistent Pat Paris with 35 points. Our best six also included Ray Orr and Brian O’Hare (who said he needed inspiration?) contributing to our score of 218. However, our efforts were only good enough for 3rd place on the day behind the winners Kiama with 225 points followed by Port Kembla with 221 points.

These results mean that Jamberoo have retained our lead in the competition but Port have cut our lead by three to 26 points. We will therefore go to the final round at The Grange with a lead of 26 points over Port Kembla. The progressive scores are:

Jamberoo             1218
Port Kembla        1192
Kiama                   1149
The Grange         1121
Wollongong        1076
The Links             1073
Russell Vale        1034

The final round is to be played at The Grange on Monday 10 November. The nomination sheet is on the notice board. Good luck guys!

Vets News

September Competition
It was a typical spring morning which started cool and overcast, but this gave way to an absolutely beautiful sunny day and the 82 starters relished this first day of spring. The course was a bit heavy after all of the rain in recent weeks but the greens were rolling true and if you managed to hit the fairways pretty consistently, you were always going to score well.

With 82 starters there was enough for two division and the results were:

Division 1
Steve Rippon         39 points
Doug Perry             38 points
B Vernon (Kiama) 37 points
Division 2
B Stephens (K)       39 points
Laurie Fogarty       38 points (c/b)
Bob McDonald      38 points
NTPs – 9th Dave Ruddy (198cms) 11th B Vernon (K) (160cms)
Drive & Pitch 8th Steve Rippon (110cms)
Balls to 29 points.

October Competition
Some concern was raised by the organisers of the Camp Quality day that our new Vets day on the 3rd Monday in October might cause a clash for some members who might then play in the Vets rather than on the Camp Quality day. While we are not convinced that this would occur we have reluctantly decided to delay the introduction of our new Vets day until November 2014. We will monitor the starters in the Camp Quality day to act as a guide for future years. Therefore we will only have one competition in October which will be on Monday 13th.

Membership renewals
Membership for 2014/15 falls due on 1st October, however I will be unable to be at the course on Monday 13th October, so I will collect memberships on the first Monday in November. For those who paid at our last meeting in September, your membership cards are available in the office, but you still need to sign your card and then either Linda or Meaghan will laminate the card for you.

You might remember Dave Ransom’s recent article on John Turner who broke his age in a recent event. I think this is a very rare event indeed and to recognise John’s achievement we have prepared a framed certificate that includes his score card from the day. The certificate will be on display on the counter at our day on Monday 13th October next to where you pay your money to Rod Hodkinson. Lance will make the formal presentation to John at the completion of his round.

Seaside and Valley Veterans Tournament
To date over 90 entries have been received for this inaugural tournament to be held at Jamberoo and Kiama from 24 to 28 November 2014 with the closing date for entries being 17 November. There will be three divisions for men and two divisions for ladies with lots of prizes on offer. If anyone is interested in playing they can contact either myself, Lance Fredericks or Stuart Potter for full details.

Next month we will be asking for volunteers to nominate to act as rangers, spotters, starters and scorers on the day.

Trevor Bell Shield – Jamberoo still leading
The September competition was held at Russell Vale on Wednesday 17th October under blue skies but extremely windy conditions. Team captain Ray Orr was unable to play on the day so he delegated responsibility for the days motivational speech to Brian O’Hare. I am assured by the other team members that Brian did in fact deliver his speech, but I just can’t seem to find anyone who was there!

The course had some reasonable run but the greens were lightning fast and if you were putting from above the hole a three putt was on the cards. However you couldn’t tell that to Karl Edlinger who was outstanding on the day and won the overall competition with 41 points just edging out Dick Farrant (Kiama) with 40 points. Karl was ably supported by Brian O’Hare, Ron Chilby, Geoff Reynolds, Peter Young and Chris Goodwin to give us an overall score of 202 points.

With 202 points Jamberoo won the day from Port Kembla (194), Links Shell Cove (190), Kiama (188), The Grange (185), Wollongong (183) and hosts Russell Vale (176). This win means Jamberoo has now won four of the five days of competition and gives us a lead of 30 points with two rounds to play at Wollongong (October) and The Grange (November). The nomination form for Wollongong is now on the board.

To illustrate the power of the wind on the day, one of the Russell Vale players left his buggy adjacent to the 17th before the arduous climb to the tee. Once at the top of the path he turned in horror to see his buggy and clubs careering down the hill and straight into the dam in front of the 16th. He didn’t get much sympathy from his playing partner who’s only comment was a complaint that his score card was now wet!

August Competition

IT was a cool morning that greeted the early starters on this first Monday of the month, but by mid-morning the day burst into brilliant sunshine and it was a pleasure to be out there on the course, and on this side of the grass!

We had 71 starters on the day which meant we had enough for 2 divisions, and the winners were:

Division 1
John Edwards 37 points
Ken Bradley 36 points
Colin Booth  34 points

Division 2
David Wardle 41 points
Ray Pearson 40 points
Doug Perry 37 points

NTPs
8th      Patrick Foy (200cm)
9th      Ralph Young (180cm)
11th    Glyn Godfrey (148cm)

***Starting October 2014 we intend to trial an additional monthly Vets comp at Jamberoo on the 3rd Monday of the month. So, as from October, we will have two competitions each month, which will normally be on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. However, due to the Labour Day public holiday on Monday 6th October, our competitions will be held on the Mondays of the 13th and 20th October. We will start advertising the new day at our Monday event in September. Tuesday 30th September will be the 5th Tuesday and Gerringong will now go ahead with this day.

Please note that the Vets financial year ends on 30 September and subscriptions will fall due in October. I will attempt to be at the course early enough to enable the early starters to pay their annual fees before they tee off for both the September and the first October event. The annual fee remains the same for 2014/15 ie. $5.00.

IVGA Championships

Thank you to the members who responded to my message earlier in the month requesting expressions of interest for the event scheduled to be held at Wollongong and Shell Links on the 29th and 30th September 2014. Unfortunately, due to a lack of entries received for the event throughout the Illawarra, the event has been postponed until 2015. The new date will be advised.

New Zealand Vets Tournament

An email has been received from across The Ditch from our counterparts in NZ. The message was sent by Roger Carroll of Vintage Sports & Leisure Ltd. I have reproduced the bulk of the email below:

Trevor Bell Shield – Jamberoo lead the comp

Thursday 28/8/14
THE day started at 7.00am at Port Kembla under a cloudy sky and who could have guessed what was about to transpire. The rain started to tumble down about 10 minutes before we hit off and everyone was waterlogged by the end of the first hole. It was somewhat “amusing” to see the sprinklers operating not only when we arrived at the course, but how they continued to activate throughout the course during the day.

You would think that the weather would have had a detrimental effect on the standard of golf played during the day (it certainly did on my game!). However, nobody told Brian O’Hare who blitzed the opposition with a phenomenal 45 points. Brian confided later that he missed a simple putt on the last that would have given him an even better score. Captain Ray Orr is claiming a large part of the credit for Brian’s amazing performance on the day “it’s all due to the inspirational talk I gave to Brian in the middle of his round” says Ray.

The exceptional performances didn’t stop there, with the ever consistent Pat Paris coming second with a score of 38 points, followed by Geoff Reynolds in third place with 37 points. Karl Edlinger, Theo Schmieder and Ray Orr made up our top six on the day.

The Jamberoo team clearly won the day with 207 points from The Grange (196) and Kiama (194). One pleasing aspect was how well the team performed away from home and that we managed to beat Port on their home turf. The team results and the progressive scores are:

Team            Starting Points          28/8/14 Results        Progressive Scores

Jamberoo                        592                                207                  799

Port Kembla                    589                               188                  777

The Grange                      557                               196                   753

Kiama                                 542                               194                 736

The Links                           538                               165                  703

Wollongong                        512                               180                 692

Russell Vale                       501                               162                  663

Jamberoo now has a 22 point lead in the Shield over second placed Port Kembla, followed by The Grange and Kiama. The next round is to be played at Russell Vale on Wednesday 17 September. The nomination sheet will be placed on the notice board on Saturday 30 August.

Well done guys!
