News from the Course – 1st May

Golf NSW 4BBB Results

36 players paid the extra $5 to play in the Golf NSW club qualifying event held on Saturday. This means that the top two pairs qualify for the Illawarra final to be played at Moss Vale in early August. The next two pairs are the reserves and will be called upon if necessary.

The leading qualifiers were Vince Byrnes and Daniel Smith with a score of 47 points.

The second qualifiers were Matt Tedeschi and Con Kiayias with 46 points.

The first reserves are Gary Hemus and Ian Unsworth with 45 on a countback.

The 2nd reserves are Paul Rodgers and Ron Hewson with 45 points and the third reserves are Brian O’Hare and Tom Zimmermann with 44.

All 18 pairs have had their names entered into the draw for a ticket to the 2017 Masters!

The Illawarra and state finals will be played under a 4BBB Par format with handicaps determined by your lower anchor point.

The winning pair at the Illawarra finals get to play the state final at Bonville Golf Resort near Coffs Harbour with all expenses paid for by Golf NSW.

Congratulations to the qualifying pairs.

Ladies Championships

The Ladies have been playing in their championships with 36 of the 54 holes completed.

In Division 1 it is very close with Ladies Captain Judi O’Brien leading by 1 shot over Marie Farrant, with Marilyn Wright and Shirley Walsh close behind.

In Division 2 Robyn Gregson leads by 5 from Lieve Stassen.

In Division 3 Sue Paul has a 6 shot advantage over Lyn Walker and an 8 shot advantage over Lorraine Cram.

Shirley Walsh leads the best nett by 1 from Sue Paul and by 2 from Robyn Gregson for the Pat Norman Trophy. Many others are close enough if good enough so an exciting  finish is to be expected.

Good luck to all in the final round on Tuesday.

Bridge over the First

The new bridge is completed and ready for use. The only remaining task is to give it an official opening and a naming. Please feel free to make your suggestions in the comments section.

Veterans Championships

The club veterans championship will be held this Monday, 2nd May.

With Steve Rippon injured and unable to play a new champion will be determined and it should be close with several players in with a good chance.

Good luck and play well to all.

  1. Dave – since many golfers will cross that bridge after either hitting into the creek or in the vain hope that their ball carried and they can find it on the other side, why not call it ‘The Bridge of Sighs’? – Peter

  2. Firstly congratulations to all of the Volunteers who put so much of their time in on this project…Notably Paul Rodgers and Lance Fredricks….many long hours put in along with many dedicated volunteers and green staff..
My thoughts for a name for the bridge…BRIDGE TO GLORY….Maybe appropriate after navigating Hyams Creek on the first hole….at this time on the course we all have high ambitions of a great round coming up….

  3. If only it were true Ron, and yes, many thanks to Paul and his group of volunteers.
I have just been notified by GolfNSW that only the top two pairs qualify as we only had 18 pairs. For three teams we needed 21+ pairs. All entries have been sent to GolfNSW to be entered in the draw to win a ticket to next year’s US Masters!
