News from the Course – 24th December

Merry Christmas to all Jamberoo members. May the New Year see the golfing gods relent and allow you to play some great golf in 2016.

Talking about great golf, some of our members have been doing just that!

Marie Smith won the ladies comp on Tuesday with 43 points, 7 more than second place-getter Joanne Burke who scored 36 points along with Shirley Walsh. Marie achieved her great score despite the terrible rain on the day.

In Monday’s veteran golfers comp the rain started 5 minutes after the shotgun went off to start the day. Nobody ceased playing however and division 1 on the day was won by Russell Vale visitor John Sutherland with 44 points. Clearly John appreciated playing on greens not quite as hard as an airport runway. Division 2 was won by popular Jamberoo member John Keeling with 43 points with Tony Silvio second on 40.

During Wednesday’s comp Dennis Thomas obliterated the course scoring 48 points on his own. Certainly it was a Christmas round for Dennis (you know –the one that happens only once a year) and is a just reward for the practice he has put in recently. What a fantastic effort from Dennis who won D Grade and loses 2 shots from his handicap.

On the same day Tony Dawson, the spritely octogenarian, fired 43 off his 18 handicap to win A/B grade. Ray Orr, Boyd Sylvester and Larry Kent took out the minor placings with 40 points each. Tony was very excited by his feat as this equates to a 78 off the stick and is the first time he has beaten his age. The club will have Tony’s score card framed and presented to him as a memento.

Larry Osterhaus was successful in C Grade winning with 40 points, one more than Jim Ryan.

The scoring was hot, just like the weather, with 38 points needed to win a ball.

In last Saturday’s Christmas Fourball team event Mick Burton and the big-hitting Wayne Arnott scored 49 points to win by one from Al Thrower and Gordon Dill on 48. Third place went to Steve Oppert and Dave Ransom with 47 points and interestingly 4th went to a pair who didn’t even play together. Andrew Ball and Neil Higham played their round as singles and, after applying the club policy on single players in fourball comps, were drawn at random from the single players to make a team. Their 46 points won 4th place on a countback from 4 other pairs.

Congratulations to all of this week’s winners.

‘Super Grade’ Days

It is proposed to include some special ‘Super Grade’ days in the new programme of events. These will be one division days where all players compete for the same prize. There will be up to 5 prizes with first starting at $50 as well as a ‘scratch’ prize.  Keep your eye out for these special days. Regular grade divisions will apply for nearest the pin and drive and pitch prizes in these comps.

Pennant teams selected

Jamberoo has entered 4 teams in this year’s Golf Illawarra Pennant Competition.

Lance Fredericks 500
White Horse Cup Captain,       Lance Fredericks

The B Pennant team looks very strong with a blending of new and veteran players and will be led by the experienced Paul Hazeltine.

Chris Leckey leads another strong C Pennant team and hopes that his team can take that next step to win a pennant in 2016. Certainly the club fully supports this ambition.

The White Horse Cup sees Jamberoo represented in both division 1 and division 3 in 2016. Jamberoo is the defending champion of the White Horse Cup and the Red team is led by Lance Fredericks. Col Booth takes over the leadership of the Green team. Both teams have a good spread of high and low markers and should be very competitive, especially with the introduction of several new talented players

All the best in 2016 to our Pennant teams.

Jamberoo Golf Club is on the move with competitions continuing to attract larger field sizes with the consequence of more prizes on offer in each grade. The new course set-up has made the course fairer to play with rough not so penal. Book in early to guarantee your tee time.
