Men’s Pennants 2016

Jamberoo Golf Club Men’s Pennant teams have achieved outstanding results over the last several seasons winning two Pennants and making yearly finals appearances. Last year all three teams reached the semi-finals with both the B Pennant and White Horse Cup reaching the final. The White Horse Cup then won its final.

The B Pennant team has been a force in Illawarra golf since winning the B Pennant in 2013 under the captaincy of Tom Persson. The last two years have seen the B Pennant team maintain this high standard reaching finals under the Bradman-like leadership of Adrian Bell. These results have come from the outstanding leadership on display and the dedication, team harmony and club spirit of the players.

C Pennant team members (L-R) Peter Francis, Tony McRae, Chris Leckey (C), Tom Zimmerman, Ron Chilby and Arthur Bosanquet.

The C Pennant has been a force in their competition for the last 10 years. They always are there or about each season without claiming that big prize at the end. Under Chris Leckey’s astute leadership the team exhibits all the qualities you could want from a Jamberoo representative team, being supportive of each other, playing in a fair and friendly way with respect to their opponent and the courses they play on. These qualities along with a great team spirit always make us a team to be reckoned with.

The White Horse Cup team was successful last year after years of disappointment under the difficult to win handicap matchplay format of this competition. Last year’s captain Dave Ransom puts the success down to a talented group who played as a team, supporting each other and enjoying each other’s company and who were very proud to do their best for the club and their mates. Our handicap mix was perfect with a scattering of low markers, mid markers and 20+ markers. The team looks forward to following up this success in the upcoming season.

All teams receive great support from the golfing community at Jamberoo Golf Club.

For 2016, Jamberoo Golf Club has entered teams in the B, C and 2 teams in the White Horse Cup competitions.

To be considered you must be a financial member of the club, have supported the club by playing regularly in our competitions and be prepared to be available for a majority of matches. There is a team available for all abilities so if you are interested then please put your name down on the list outside the golf shop.

All players selected are expected to play fairly, showing respect to their opponent, the competition and to the host club. They are expected to assist team captains in a positive way and help with the preparations when their team hosts visiting clubs.

Golf Illawarra has made some changes for the 2016 season. The handicap cut-off point has been moved to the 24th of January, so players will not be able to move their handicap upwards from this point (for pennant matches only)

Each competition commences on Sunday the 7th of February. Semi-finals will be held on March 13 at Mt Broughton GC for all grades and the final on March 20 at Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club.

Handicaps in B Pennant range from 4.5 -12.4.

Handicaps in C Pennant range from 12.5 -18.4.

Handicaps in White Horse Cup are up to a maximum of 24.

In all Pennants, players will play off their lowest achieved handicap from January 24, 2016. In the case of players (in B and C Pennants) on the lower limit reducing their handicaps by a maximum of 1 (one) stroke, they may remain in the team but will give 1 (one) stroke to their opponents as determined by the Balanced Distribution Match Play Index.  To play in the finals a player must make 2 regular season appearances.

Although the competition starts in February it is necessary to nominate by November 30 so that shirts can be ordered. We are planning to pick teams by December 31 so don’t leave it to the last moment or you may miss out.

We wish each team great success for the upcoming season.

  1. Hi Dave, just a quick check on handicap range for B Pennants. I think this year it has been lowered to 4.5 from the 5.5 of previous years, cheers

  2. Thanks Ray that appears to be right according to the latest rules I’ve got. I will check again with the Illawarra President to be sure. In the meantime I will edit the article to reflect this lower mark.
