IN the 2014 Jamberoo Open, 97 players, including 50 with single digit handicaps (25 of which play off 3 or less), were met by perfect weather conditions and a course in excellent condition with firm fairways and fast greens. With such a strong field assembled and ideal conditions thoughts were that the scoring would be hot on the tricky Jamberoo layout.

And so it turned out to be with both big-hitting Links Shell Cove scratch marker, Chris Reeves, and equally long Wollongong 1 marker, Justin Craig firing 66 off the stick on the par 67 layout. As published on the entry form the Australian Countback System was applied to award Chris the Open title with 33 on the back nine compared to Justin’s 34 who was awarded the runners up prize.

Other excellent scores were recorded by The Heads’ Ian Asbury (off scratch) who fired an even par 67 while Mark Johnston from The Heads (off +1) and Kiama scratch marker, Jordan Widdicombe both fired 68’s.

In the handicap section, Brian O’Hare, using his course knowledge and experience to good effect scored nett 62 off his 22 handicap to win by one from James Thompson (off 18). Brian turned in a 3-over 36 on the front nine and maintained his good form over the back nine to improve on last year’s result, where he was C grade nett winner to take out the main nett title this year. James was runner up with a fine nett 63 after an 81 off the stick.

A Grade gross winner was Mark Johnston 67 on a countback, with A grade nett winner being Lee Maddinson , from the Heads, with nett 66 from his 7 handicap.

B Grade gross winner was Simon Tedeschi with 81 on a countback while Graham Carroll won the nett with 67.

C Grade gross winner was Paul Rodgers with 89 with Terry McGill from Kiama winning the nett with 68.

In the Fredericks IGA nearest the pins, David Warman from South West Rocks won the A Grade with 172 cm; Paul Wilson from Kiama won the B grade with 490 cm and Tony Bourke also from Kiama won the C Grade with 900 cm.

The Super Shot Sweepstakes of $220 was won by Lee Maddinson from the Heads with a shot measured to 250 cm.

The AMCR for the blue course is 66 to a par of 67 and the DSR was 68 on the day.
