Match report:

Jamberoo B pennant team unfortunately had their 1st loss of the season at Port Kembla golf club with the Grange winning three matches to Jamberoo’s two. The conditions on the day were very wet and slippery with continual light rain falling during the morning.

Paul Hazeltine played some tremendous golf and had a huge win for the team. His match was very close initially but Paul had a comfortable lead at the half way mark. He found the “slot” on the back nine and ran away with the match, giving his opponent no chance of making a come-back. Paul’s secret weapon in the wet conditions was a hanky wrapped around his golf club’s grip to stop the club turning in his hands.

Tom Persson’s putter was “acting up” and refused to hole anything of note on the day. His opponent played very steady golf, consistently hitting fairways and greens and lagging long putts up to tap in distance.

Jarryd “Bubba” Buckley worked his way into a two-up lead but some of Jarryd’s enormous drives strayed into the treacherous water hazards on the back nine. His tenacious opponent kept chipping away at his lead and eventually went on to take the match 2/1.

Pete Munro provided another riveting finish as he was all-square going into the 18th hole (the 4th was our last hole as we teed off on the 5th hole). Both Pete and his opponent split the middle with their drives and hit their second shots from similar positions on the fairway. Pete found the green side bunker with his second shot and his opponent hit the front of the green leaving a “monster” putt. Pete’s opponent stroked his putt up to close range leaving Pete to get up and down from the bunker. Pete’s sand wedge blasted through the wet sand but the ball just failed to clear the lip of the bunker and rolled back to a similar position. Pete shook hands on a narrow but gallant 1-down loss.

Next week the team plays Shoalhaven Heads at the Links Shell Cove.

Adrian Bell

[As previously reported, the White Horse Cup squad had a win at Shoalhaven Heads while the C’s had a bye.
