White Horse Cup Semi-final

by David Ransom

As captain and manager of our White Horse Cup Pennant team I can say that I am proud of the efforts of each member of the team who represented the club with distinction.

The White Horse Cup was the first Pennant competed for in the Illawarra and has run every year since 1934. Jamberoo has competed in this competition since the inception of our club in 1981.

We have a proud history having won the Cup twice. Our first win was in 2015 followed by another in 2016, and have competed in the finals in 2017, 2018 and 2021.

Our two teams have special names, being the ‘Magpies’ and ‘Cowpats’.

The cowpats won their section and played the semi-final today against the Links Shell Cove.

Conditions at the Moss Vale course were atrocious with soaked fairways and constant rain, but the match had to be played. Starting at 12.15, one hour after the scheduled tee time, a very close tussle took place between two very even teams.

In the end the Links secured victory with 4.5 wins to our 2.5 wins ending our season.

I personally would like to thank all the players who represented us so well throughout the season.

Stef Tinworth, Matt Tedeschi, Andrew Ransom, Peter Young, Peter Francis, Phil Gosling, Rob Young, Steve Oppert, Noel Laman, Shane Townsend and Dave Ransom.

For those interested, today we won two games easily, lost 2 games on the 18th and two on the 17th and would have won the squared match if it was allowed to continue.

Winners today were Matt Tedeschi 5/4 and Stef Tinworth 4/3 who both played excellent rounds of golf.

Peter Francis and Shane Townsend lost on the 18th green while Noel Laman and Andrew Ransom lost on the 17th green.

Phil Gosling squared his match after 18 and had to start a playoff which had proceeded to the 20th hole with Phil about to win that hole and the match when they were called in and the match declared a half.

Shane was 5 down at the half way point against his big hitting opponent and managed to get it back to square after 16. Andrew also struggled early and was 4 down at the turn. He too got it back to even but a pair of evil lip outs on 16 and 17 cost him his match.

Well played team. Better luck next year.
