News From the Course – 26 May

Holes of the week

This week we are going to look at two of the most difficult par 4’s on the course, the 1st and 18th. Both involve a shot across Hyam’s Creek.

The first is a long par 4 and the tee shot requires a 240+ metre carry over Hyam’s Creek, the feature that gives the hole its name – ‘Hyam’s Challenge’. For mere mortals a lay-up off the tee followed by a long approach shot over the creek and then hopefully a short pitch shot and 1 putt will achieve that elusive par 4. Many people start with a 6 here after going for that big shot, so play it carefully and be happy with a nett par.

The 18th hole is named after the sentinel Pine Trees that guard the fairway. It requires an accurate drive to just short of Hyam’s Creek or for the long hitters a 240+ metre carry over the creek. If you haven’t the power to hit it over in one then you have at least an 160 metre shot to the severely sloping green which is guarded by a lone bunker short and another small creek before the green. Miss it long and you have a very difficult up-and-down.

Rule of the Week

There are three important principles to remember when playing golf:
• Play the course as you find it.
• Play the ball as it lies.
• And if you can’t do either, do what’s fair.

Ball Lost or Out of Bounds; Provisional Ball

If your ball is lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds you must play another ball from the spot where the last shot was played, under penalty of one stroke, i.e. stroke and distance.

You are allowed 5 minutes to search for a ball. If it is not found within 5 minutes it is lost.

If, after playing a shot, you think your ball may be lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds you should play a provisional ball. You must announce that it is a provisional ball and play it before you go forward to search for the original ball.

If the original ball is lost (other than in a water hazard) or out of bounds, you must continue with the provisional ball, under penalty of one stroke. If the original ball is found in bounds within 5 minutes, you must continue play of the hole with it, and must stop playing the provisional ball.

This Week’s Results

The wind blew early in the week and the green’s hardened up. The later stages of the week saw fine cool days perfect for golf. If you failed to play then you certainly missed some great golfing days, just look at the photos taken of the 1st and 18th holes.

The Veterans played on Monday with William Perry taking out A division with 40 points from George Vlatko and Greg Seymour who both scored 36 points. George won the prize on a countback.

The Ladies played a Stableford on Tuesday with Marie Farrant winning A grade with 37 points, 2 better than runner up Dell Brand. Judy Casey took out B grade with 36 points which was 2 more than runner up Robyn Gregson. The C grade winner was Margaret Chaffey with 30 points 3 more than runner up Marlene Trethowan.

On Wednesday under perfect but cold golfing conditions the club played a stableford competition. A/B division was won by Tony Rodriguez who scored a fantastic 43 points from his 12 handicap, 72 off the stick – a great round of golf. Greg Tarrant, Al Thomas and John Brand all finished on 39 points with John being the unlucky player missing out on third place on a countback. John won the Super Shot and a drive and pitch so he still went home happy I’m sure. In C Grade Paul Tucker was able to hang on to win with 40 points from his playing partner Mal Garratt, who had a putt on the last to win it all. Another cruel lip-out saw Paul take the prize. D Grade saw Pat Travers win with 39 points 1 better than Lindsay Wiseman.

On Saturday a Stableford was played and Steve Rippon was the A Grade winner with 40 points. B Grade was won by Mark Fisher with 42 points on a countback from Doug Perry. In third place Greg Rodgers had 39 points.C Grade was won by Paul Tucker, his second win of the week, with 39 points, with Al Thrower taking second place with 37 points on a countback from Mick Bartlett. Geoff Boxsell was our D Grade winner scoring 36 points while Marie Farrant took out the Ladies division with a very solid 38 points.

  1. Hi Capt. on the 7th green today I witnessed some putter rage! I hope this player is remorseful after repairing the Grand Canyon look alike back to its original state.

  2. I believe the player concerned exhibited appropriate contrition and showed his group the proper way to repair a pitch mark, unlike the person who failed to repair the crater of a sprig mark that he hit on his putt causing said excavation. You couldn’t even tell it was there after the group left the green!

  3. Hi Dave,

I am going overseas today and will not be back until 11 June. Can you enter me into the singles matchplay championship please?
