Trevor Bell Memorial Shield Round 1 Report

The weather was just beautiful for the start of the first round of the 2017 Trevor Bell Memorial Shield at Wollongong, and I would like to acknowledge Ewald Klein for agreeing to substitute at very late notice to ensure we had a full team. This was originally supposed to be round 2, but last month the opening round at Russell Vale was postponed because carts could not be used on the course.

The start was a bit chilly after a light southerly had sprung up. Unfortunately, the wind’s intensity increased throughout the day and it made putting an extremely difficult proposition as the greens quickened considerably. It was Port Kembla who performed best on the day with a winning score of 212, followed by Kiama (200) and The Links (198). Jamberoo came in equal fourth with our hosts Wollongong with a score of 182.

Our best performer on the day was Tony Dawson with 33 points followed by Geoff Reynolds and Ewald Klein who both had 31 points. It was a solid performance from the team, but we were just a little off the pace today. Let’s hope we achieve a better result in the next round at The Grange on Monday 5th June. The nomination form is on the Vets Notice Board.
