July Competition
As a result of the wintery weather, numbers were limited to 71 players this month, which means there were only 2 grades. The winners were:

Division 1
Albert Davies 37 points
Peter Robinson 36 points
Glyn Godfrey 34 points

Division 2
David Wardle 40 points (c/b)
Stuart Potter 40 points
Ray Pearson 37 points

The NTP on the 9th was won by Patrick Foy (337cms) and Ralph Young won the drive and pitch on the 8th (69cms). I was nearby when Ralph played his shot to the green and I saw it hit the pin, so he might have been unlucky that it didn’t drop for an eagle. The ball comp went down to 31 points.

Mollymook visit
Jamberoo hosted Mollymook on Monday 21st July and Jamberoo prevailed with a scoring average of 30.08 points to Mollymook’s average of 24 points. The game was played in brilliant sunshine but surprisingly the scoring didn’t match the weather with only a handful of competitors playing to their handicap.

Men
Bob Crooks 39 points
Richard Langford 38 points (c/b)
Theo Schmieder 38 points

Women
Viv Boxsell 34 points
Sue Paul 30 points
The NTPs were won by Chris Goodwin (123cms) and Viv Boxsell (172cms)

Trevor Bell Shield
There was no play in July. The next game is scheduled for late August at Port Kembla. If you would like to play in future rounds of the Shield, please advise our Team Captain, Mr Ray Orr.

Around the Traps
Anyone who has played at the Links over the past year would have noticed the facilities being constructed between the 13th green and 14th tee. It must be very close to operational by now because during a recent visit (to the course not the facilities!) they have officially named the facility as “Nearest Point of Relief”.

Seaside and Valley Veterans Golf Tournament 2014

THE inaugural Seaside and Valley Veterans Golf Tournament will be held 24 to 28 November at the Jamberoo and Kiama Golf Clubs.

This is the amalgamation of the two previous tournaments played separately as the Kiama Seaside Tournament and the Jamberoo Valley Tournament.

The two events have been joined as the majority of players play both tournaments and concerns were raised over the need to lodge separate entry forms, pay two lots of entry fees and attend and pay for two separate presentation dinners.

The new combined tournament includes one day events, a two day event and a three day event for both ladies and men.

June Competition

Our June competition was a little down on numbers which only allowed us to have two divisions for the day. The winner of Division 1 was J Edwards with 38 points followed by C Goodwin and L Fredericks on 37 points. Division 2 was won by B Weir with 40 points followed by R Pearson with 39 points and L Fuller with 38 points. Our next monthly event is scheduled for Monday 7th July.

Trevor Bell Shield

Round 3 of the competition was held at Jamberoo on Thursday 12th June and what a great result for Jamberoo. We managed to repeat our good result from last round and again filled the top two positions with Pat Paris winning the day with 37 points on a countback from Karl Edlinger. There were also good performances from Ray Orr and Eddie Klein who both had 34 points. As a result, Jamberoo won the day with 200 points followed by Port Kembla with 192 points and The Grange with 186 points.

This terrific result from the team means that we have leapfrogged over Port Kembla into the No 1 position. The next round is at Port Kembla in August so we will need to be at our best to hold off Port from retaking the lead. Also, special thanks to Lance Fredericks, Robyn Gregson and Stuart Potter for arranging the catering and cooking the BBQ on the day. Without the help of these guys the day would not have been the success that it was.
The progressive point score is:

Jamberoo 592
Port Kembla 589
The Grange 557
Kiama 542
The Links 538
Wollongong 512
Russel Vale 501

Future Tournaments

1. The Illawarra Veteran Golfers Association Championship is to be held Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th September 2014 at Wollongong and The Links Shell Cove golf Clubs. This is the inaugural event and will be conducted in three grades. Participating players must be affiliated through one of the Group 3 Illawarra clubs. A & B grade will play Stroke and C grade Stableford. Further details and entry forms can be obtained from myself or from the “Veterans Tournaments” folder in the golfers lounge.

2. Young Cherry Festival Veterans Week of Golf from 16th to 21st November 2014. Trevor Bell Memorial Shield
The May event was held at the links and what a result for Jamberoo! We filled three of the top five positions. Eddie Klein won the day with 39 points, followed by yours truly with 38 points and Pat Paris with 35 points. We clearly won the day by almost 20 points which has seen us rocket up the ladder into second position only 5 points behind last years winners Port Kembla. The next round is at Jamberoo on 12th June and there are high expectations of a good result at home.
Following his somewhat tardy arrival at the Links, the question was raised about who was going to give our esteemed captain, Ray Orr a wake up call on the dayJ
The Seaside and the Valley Tournament
This year Jamberoo and Kiama GCs have decided to combine their respective November tournaments into a single event. The event kicks off at Jamberoo on the Monday 24th November and moves to Kiama on Tuesday and back to Jamberoo on Thursday. The presentation will take place at Kiama on Thursday evening. A mixed fourball will be played at Kiama on Friday 28th November. There will be daily winners as well as 36 hole and 54 hole trophies up for grabs. We are still in the planning phase at the moment and we’ll provide regular updates in the lead up to the tournament.

News from the Course
Ken Bradley, one of our members, recently donated 2 dozen balls to the Vets to be used as NTPs. Ken suggested the 11th hole and the rest of the board agreed. So starting on Monday 5th May, Vets members will have an additional NTP for the next 12 months. Thanks very much to Ken for his kind generosity.

Trevor Bell Memorial Shield
The Veterans representative season has commenced and Ray Orr has kindly agreed to act as the coordinator for Jamberoo during the upcoming season. The first round was held at Kiama in early April and Port Kembla were victorious on the day amassing 230 points, while Jamberoo was a creditable 5th with 188 points. The next round is to be held at The Links on Thursday 8th May (hit off at 8am). Early each month a nomination sheet for the next round is posted on the Vets notice board next to the starters window.
