B Pennant vs Shoalhaven Heads @ the Grange

Jamberoo 4 def Shoalhaven Heads 1

The Jamberoo B Pennant team travelled to the Grange to take on Shoalhaven Heads. All 8 members of the squad were in attendance. The three reserves caddying which was appreciated in the steamy conditions.

Pat Paris was first off but he came up against a red hot putter going down 3/2 in a tight match. The next 3 matches saw comfortable wins to Jamberoo. John Paul 4/3. TP 5/4 and Jarrod Gehrmann 6/4.

No 1 Adrian Bell had a real dogfight but showed great tenacity to come home strong to win 2 up.

So a great 4-1 win first up to the Roos.

C Pennant vs Kiama @ Jamberoo

“The Sharks are circling”

Jamberoo 3.5 def Kiama 1.5

In oppressive heat our new look team got the start we wanted by winning 3.5 to 1.5 over our arch rivals Kiama.

Thanks to our impressive starter Bruce Hammond, we were sent out onto our beautiful and well presented ‘Royal’ Jamberoo course.

Dave Ransom teed off 1st and was 1st to finish with a marvelous 5/3 win over his long hitting opponent. Since Dave was 1st back to the shed he decided to modify his new shirt and add a splash of red to go with the green….tomato sauce red!

Ron Chilby was next, and he led most of the game, but found himself all square on the 18th tee. Staring down defeat with his opponent on the dance floor Ron managed to chip in to halve the hole to share the game.

Andrew Ball’s C Pennant debut was a great success with a solid 3/2 win @ no.3. Andrew was confident from the get go and always had his opponents measure. His opponent saying he was a single figure player up until recently.

Tim Young was steady as always and beat Kiama’s captain 3/1. Tim and Andrew are rock solid Cronulla Sharks supporters and winners, so I’m saying the C Pennants team be known as THE SHARKS.

In the No 1 match Chris Leckey played well but his opponent was way too good on the day and he went down 6/5.

This annual, sometimes biannual, game against Kiama has a perpetual trophy up for grabs being the ‘Town and Country’ Cup. This year being a home and away format we need to either win both matches or claim the most game wins.

Jim Henry and Tony McRae were great support and did a great job with the BBQ. Jim debuts next week @ The Grange.

Go the Sharkies!

Editor’s note: it would have to be TIGER sharks for me

White Horse Cup Reds vs Nowra @ Vincentia

Jamberoo 4 def Nowra 2

With the temperature nudging 30 degrees at 7.00am the task today was always going to be difficult and coupled with the knowledge our first two opponents went by the names Flash and Sumo, it didn’t  auger well for the Reds. As the highest marker, I teed off first, but Flash must have been half asleep because he gifted me the first four holes. He made an attempt to reduce the deficit but I eventually fell over the line 3 and 2. Next to tee off was one of our newbies, Gary Harvey, and he was up next against Sumo. Gary had an eventful trip to Vincentia where he “wore” his coffee in his lap trying to avoid an errant driver near Nowra (and I thought Brian O’Hare was playing at Port!). But it didn’t faze Gary who scored a “kimarite” over Sumo to claim the match 7 and 5. As this was Gary’s first match, it was an excellent effort.

Next to the tee was Johnny Bermudez, another debutant who managed to arrive at Vincentia unscathed. It was a tight match throughout but he eventually got his nose in front and closed out the game 3 and 2. This was a strong showing from Johnny, particularly because it was also his first match. Bryan Nicoll was up next but his opponent got an early break and was 5 up at the turn. Most people would have written him off at that stage, but Bryan made a courageous comeback to be just one down after 16. He had a putt on 17 that would have taken it to the 18th, but it just lipped out and he succumbed 2 and 1. This was the fighting spirit we were looking for in the team and that never say die attitude.

Playing at number 2 today was Greg Tarrant who had to give 2 strokes to his opponent. The match was tight throughout and at one stage Greg got his nose in front but in the difficult conditions both players were happy to walk away with a halved match. Our Number 1 today was Greg Seymour, also a debutant and he had to give three strokes to his opponent so it was never going to be an easy task. The match see-sawed all day and there was never more than 1 hole separating the two players. In the end this match was also halved, but with these two halves it gave Jamberoo victory on the day by 4 to 2.

The conditions yesterday were quite oppressive with high humidity but luckily the cloud cover offered some relief. All games played in good spirit with players from all teams mingling and exchanging tall stories about their exploits on the day. Our hosts Vincentia provided the players with steak burgers and TWO drinks at the completion of their round and these were extremely well received. The other two winners in our group were Vincentia and Shell Links who both had impressive victories by 5 to 1. We next face Shell Links at Nowra so it should be a good match with two of the winners from yesterday facing off against each other.

White Horse Cup Cowpats vs St George’s Basin @ Port Kembla

Jamberoo 4 def the Basin 2

BRILLIANT EFFORT IN TRYING TIMES…………………………………………… SIEN METU

Some highlights on the day:

The Golden Cowpat’s (Scott Hainsworth) game ebbed and flowed until the Cowpat determination won through.

Mark  Cassel, batting last and existing on 4 hours sleep, pulled off another one of his more remarkable wins with Vince’s club selection in the long run making the difference. Our Bookmaker on the Day, Peter Francis, had fluctuating odds on the outcome up until the 16th Hole.

Our Vice-Captain on the Day Brian O’Hare set the scene by motivating all the Cowpats with his resounding win 8/7.

The Saint (Col Booth) squeezed out a 2/1 victory in a close and intense match.

It was evident on Sunday that all teams at Port Kembla recognised and acknowledged that the little club from Jamberoo has actually 18 holes and we are on our way to winning 5 WHC Cups in a row. The Big Clubs have their nose out of joint as they consider the Cowpat Cup their own possession.

The Shirts and Hats have already become a status symbol and collector’s item , with the intimidation factor proving useful at critical times during the day.

Questions such as: “Where do you get your players from; Is it true that the Lord of The Rings was filmed in Jamberoo; Do your flies actually Moo when flying around your eyes and under your glasses”??

One player from Port asked if we still had sand greens, well the answer to all questions was actually a RESOUNDING YES!

The myth has already spread and the opposition is acknowledging the PRESENCE of a Jamberoo aura.

Even Chris Goodwin indicated that same aura was evident when he played with the Jamberoo Dragons against Nowra, also with an excellent win also 4/2, with intimidation a big factor.
