2016 Pennant Reports – 28th February

With one round to go all of our teams are in with a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. The White Horse Cup RED team are there already with their fourth win in a row. The Green team are a very good chance and need to win 3 or more of the six games next Sunday to qualify. As they are undefeated the club will be looking for them to remain undefeated so that the long awaited Jamberoo vs Jamberoo semi-final can occur.

The C Pennant team need to win at home next Sunday to qualify.

The B Pennant have raced back into contention with their great win at home last Sunday but will need the favoured teams to win their matches next Sunday as well as recording a big win themselves. This is quite possible!

B Pennants win at Home

Jamberoo 4 defeated Links Shell Cove 1

B Pennant John Paul and Anthony Smith
Anthony Smith and John Paul celebrate their victories

Today we played at home against the Links Shell Cove and won easily 4-1. Anthony Smith continued his good form with a handy 2/1 victory despite having a 2 shot handicap disadvantage. John Paul, making his long-awaited debut, with a handicap 4 higher than his opponent, recovered from a nervous start to take charge of his match 3/2. Pat Paris, having rested last week, showed his opponent how to play at Jamberoo winning very well 5/4. Paul  Hazeltine again played a fine round of golf recording a comfortable 4/3 victory. Adrian Bell was slow to start and trailed after nine. This spurred him on, however, and Adrian made one of his famous back nine surges to apply the pressure and almost grab a terrific comeback victory.

Remarkably, with good results next weekend, we are still with a chance of playing in the semi-finals. We need a 5-0 win over Wollongong with Moss Vale defeating Russell Vale 4/1 or better, and the Links to beat the Grange. If the Links and The Grange draw it comes down to individual match/hole results. If we can squeeze into the semis anything can happen!

“Practice, toughen up, big match coming up!!!”

Paul Hazeltine

White Horse Cup Green Team

WHC Green 4 defeated Worrigee 2

…Worrigee… Last year’s finalists came re-energised for revenge.

No long drives in the morning, they stayed in the Motel overnight at Wollongong Golf Club and were seen jogging along the beach prior to breakfast with plenty of star jumps in the warm up prior to hit off. They were keen to knock off the Champions and exact revenge.

This is a well-financed outfit at Worrigee and keen to be finalists so this was their big opportunity.

Cowpats, as you know, there is no substitute for passion, team spirit with each man pulling for each other and as Brian so colloquial put it as the game unfolded, ‘the romance of the moment’ happens and  even Larry starts to look respectable.

These qualities win games not the dollar incentives.

I found it interesting that some of the captains of the opposition were comparing the WHC Champs to the Great St George League team of the past on the verandah of the Wollongong Golf Club.

Can Jamberoo win 2 in a row then go on and challenge for the next 9 years and emulate the St George Dragons?? If you compare our Players I believe we can …

Shane … similar side step to Changa Langlands;

Scott … pace and grit of Reg Gasnier;

Scott Hainsworth hole in one Jamberoo Open 2015
Scott aka Reg

Mark … the good looks of Ian Walsh;

Brian … definitely a Billy Smith dasher with the Romance;

Brian O'Hare hole_in_one_2015
Brian O’Hare aka Billy

GT  … The Speed of Johnny King

Larry…a Brian Clay look-a-like

Matt …Eddie Lumsden tenaciousness

Colin …Kevin Ryan toughness

Col Booth
Col with similar traits to Kevin Ryan. Played last year’s final with a broken jaw?

Dave Ransom … Frank Facer administration [he will have to spend more time with the Cowpats to be included]

I must admit I was surprised that this comparison came up but I am prepared to wear it after the 4/2 thumping the Cowpats gave Worrigee.

Jet Lag and Truck Lag were the only forces stopping a 6/0 thrashing.

Well Done Cowpats

 White Horse Cup REDS

WHC REDS 5 defeated Kiama 1

The REDS have qualified with a week to go thanks to an outstanding team performance against the highly competitive and experienced Kiama team.

Again we started shakily and after 5 holes Kiama was in front overall 4 – 2.

Tenacious play by our team saw great pressure put on the Kiama lads and saw their leads evaporate.

Ken Bradley, playing number 1 this week, was very consistent and never trailed in his match. He eventually closed out the match 2/1. Lance Fredericks tapped into his vast reserve of experience and in a quality performance won his match 3/2. Andrew Ball trailed early but slowly clawed his way back into his match and nearly defeated his Kiama opponent, losing on the 18th.

Steve Jackson had a titanic struggle on his hands and it took a great putt on the 18th green that spun around the hole twice before falling in, to win 1 up. Peter Francis was playing a fresh Kiama player who had never tasted defeat in a pennant match. Peter introduced him to the flavour, winning easily 3/2. Brad Jackson was playing the young gun from Kiama who had thrashed everybody before him in previous games. The very likeable and friendly lad found that Brad was no push over. Brad made a charge on the back nine and won it on the 18th.

With the away match against St George’s Basin to go the REDS have qualified for the semi hopefully against the Green team. The only question is whether the skip will make a last pennant appearance before his retirement?

Go the REDS!!

Jamberoo 2 lost to Links Shell Cove 3 at the Links.

Round 5

Perfect conditions greeted our team for a Midday tee off against the strong local side.

Birthday boy, Greg Tarrant was in the zone and came away with a 7/5 win playing no2.  I hope he praises his wife for the electric buggy present she gave him.

Wayne Griffiths aka “Old Buck” held on in the end to win his game on the last with great support from “Young Buck” Tom Zimmermann. Wayne held his nerve on the last after measuring his lay up to perfection!

Chris lost his match 2/1. Having won 2 holes with birdies and being 10 over after 16 holes I went down in a quality match with no excuses.

Boyd had a similar game going down 3/2 with the lead changing a few times.

Tim had the difficult task playing No1 and found his opponent was on his game and went down 6/5.

With the final round next week, we need to win at home to qualify for the Semi Final.
