News from the course – 17th December

After 40 years a welcome hole in one for Chris Leckey
After 40 years a welcome hole in one for Chris Leckey

Hole-in-one

“How about that, a hole in one……finally after 40 years, you beauty?
Didn’t think it would ever happen.
I said to Smithy before I hit the shot that I was trying something different as I have been spinning back off the green so I bunted an 8 iron hoping it would release and it did, one bounce and it was in!!
Oh what a nice feeling.”

Congratulations to C Pennant captain, Chris Leckey, for his first hole in one last Saturday the 13th of December at the 7th. As you can see by his statement he was clearly quite exhilarated by the experience. Chris will be rewarded by 6 golf balls and will have the ball mounted as a permanent reminder of his perfect shot.  Well played Hatski (or from now on aceski).

Rumours are that two other members have had a hole in one in recent weeks. I believe perennial nearest the pin sharp shooter Bruce Byers had one at Shoalhaven Heads in November and John Pringle scored one at the ninth on the 1st of December in the veteran’s comp proving that experience is very valuable in ace hunting! John will also have his ball mounted as a permanent reminder of that great shot.

Congratulations to all three. Oh what a feeling!  Well done!

Members honoured with Life Membership of JGC

New Life Members Ian Boles and Shirley Walsh
New Life Members Ian Boles and Shirley Walsh after receiving their awards from President Lance Fredericks at the presentation afternoon

After many years of dedicated service to the betterment of the club and to the benefit of members, two selfless members were presented with life Membership of Jamberoo Golf Club at the recent Presentation Night. Shirley Walsh and Ian Boles have dedicated many years to the club in their many roles.

When you think of veteran’s golf you think immediately of Ian. He was the driving force behind its conception and the main reason for its present thriving state. As for Shirley, what can you say? She has been and still is the central figure in the ladies side of the club and apart from her excellent golf game she is also a wonderful administrator and an inspiration to all members.

These awards were greatly deserved.

Club Championship Prizes

For those members who won trophies in this year’s men’s club championship the good news is that your prize vouchers from our sponsor Drummond Golf are now available from the club. There was a delay caused by an oversight by the sponsor and he apologises for the delay.

Our three champions all represented the club in the district champion of champions on the 7th of December at the Highlands Golf Club. Steve Rippon was battling a back and leg injury but still played to maintain the reputation of the club. Although playing reasonably he did not contend and is looking forward to another opportunity when fully fit in the future. B grade champion James Thompson played quite well and was the runner up in the B grade champion of champions. C grade champion, Paul Rodgers ,also battling an injury, started poorly but was able to produce an excellent back nine to move in contention, but, alas, he was too far behind and finished top 10.

Thanks to our champions for representing the club in this important Illawarra Golf event.
