A fine and sunny winter’s morning greeted the 65 competitors for the 2013 Jamberoo Mens Open.  A strong field, including several past open champions, a +1, a scratch, two 1 markers and a total of 11 players with a 6 handicap or less, were attracted to the challenging Jamberoo layout.

Visitors from Glenmore Heritage, Shoalhaven Heads, Links Shell Cove, Kiama, Howlong, Russell Vale, Queanbeyan, Worrigee Links, Port Kembla, Highlands and Cooma Golf Clubs were welcomed to play in our annual Open event, that this year was part of the Illawarra Open Series. The event was kindly sponsored by Drummond Golf Warrawong and Fredericks IGA.

The course was set up with the flags in challenging positions requiring careful positioning of your approach shots and chips. The flag position on 18 was especially difficult with one visiting Kiama member completing his round after a 6 putt (the locals know to keep under the hole here, otherwise disaster waits!).

The winner of the day was Russell Vale 3 marker, Steven Townsend, who fired a very impressive 70 gross, winning by 4 shots from Jason Kast from the Links Shell Cove, Troy Monie from Worrigee Links and our own Tom Persson. Steven recorded 15 pars and 3 bogies in his excellent round, carefully staying out of trouble playing to the centre of the greens. Steve was very appreciative of the course conditions and generous in his praise.

Nett winner was Jamberoo member Steve Oppert, who fired a 63 nett from his 19 handicap to win by 3 from Jamberoo members Brian O’Hare and Michael Bartlett who both shot nett 66. Steve had his usual magnificent putting on display to account for his fantastic score.

A grade gross winner was Jason Kast and Nett winner was Tom Persson. B grade gross winner was Ty Phu from Glenmore Heritage with 80; nett winner was Jamberoo’s Craig Starr with 67 on a count back.

In C Grade Brian O’Hare won the gross with 89 while Michael Bartlett was nett winner with 66.

The 9th hole, nearest the pin prizes, sponsored by Fredericks IGA were won by:

A grade S Griffiths (Queanbeyan); B Grade Chris Leckey; and C Grade J Humphreys (Links Shell Cove).

Other nearest the pins were won by: B Grade (11th hole) A Vernon (Kiama); C Grade (7th hole) P Randall.

The A grade nearest the pin on the 13th hole went unclaimed with all 31 A graders missing the green on the 132 metre hole.

Drive and Pitch winners were: A Grade (16th hole) Ray Orr; B Grade (6th hole) Peter Francis and C Grade (8th hole) Scott McCabe.

Jamberoo Golf Club would like to thank the support of our sponsors – Drummond Golf Warrawong and Fredericks IGA and congratulate John Duncan and the green staff on an excellently presented course.

Thank you also to all of the competitors who have made this such a successful event.

  1. hey dave I told rippon and everyone that a guy from Russell vale would win.simple fact of placement of irons will win.russell vale is an iron course..how did rippon play?

  2. Steve hit it very well and had the ball rolling on the greens, but nothing would drop. He got a few over par and then went for it on the last 4 holes but spun the ball back into the water on 17 and then laid up off the tee on 18 straight into the creek causing his score to blow out.

  3. Congratulations to Steve Townsend. Must be the good Karma . Russell Vale donated $500 to assist with our Tornado Cleanup. Please thank any members of Russell Vale you see. Great stats Dave.
