New Matchplay Champions Crowned

Chris and Bob toast their win in the Fourball Matchplay Championship

In a very close final Chris Leckey and Bob Wright defeated Pete Munro and Ron Hewson on the 18th green.

Low marker Pete had to give his opponents Chris and Bob 8 shots and 13 respectively and 10 to Ron for his team. The last shots owed were on the 18th so both teams were in it until the very end.

Bob sank the winning putt on the 18th in a extremely close and competitive match.

Bobby and Chris are chuffed to have won this event for the first time after each had changed from their long-time fourball partners this year in a master stroke. Commiserations to Pete and Ron who played consistently good golf throughout the 4 rounds of the event.

The match was played in great spirit and showed the true camaraderie of our club.

Good luck to both Col Booth and Ron Hewson who are set to play their Individual Matchplay final on Saturday. A close match is anticipated

Rules Update

I had a rules enquiry on Tuesday that I think needs to be brought to the attention of members. This follows the occurrence in this year’s US Masters tournament where Zac Johnson was not penalised despite hitting his ball with a practice swing before a tee shot.

You see it all depends on what part of the course the accidental hit happens.

If it is in the teeing area, the ball is not in play until you intentionally make a swing at it, therefore there is no penalty. This is exactly what happened to Zac. [Rule 6.2b(5) and Rule 6.2b(6)].

If you are on the putting green [Rule 13.1d(1)]. If you strike and move your ball with a practice swing or accidentally cause your ball to move in any other way you can simply replace your ball on its original spot without penalty.

On all other sections of the course the ball is in play and if you move it with a practice swing then you still have not made a stroke but you get a one-stroke penalty for having caused your ball to move in play. You must replace the ball on its original spot [Rule 9.4]. If the player instead plays the ball from where it was moved to after the practice swing, it becomes a two-stroke penalty (or loss of hole in match-play).

2019 Eclectic Update

Did you know that all male members are enrolled in the 2019 Eclectic Competition (the Ladies run their own as well)? From July to the 16th of November, all stableford and stroke rounds have been or will be used to determine your individual best score on each hole.

With the Gold Medal round being the last to count you have about six weeks to make an impact.

The Fredericks’ IGA Trophy is up for grabs in both gross and handicap sections. Your handicap is half of your final daily handicap.

A list is regularly posted on the noticeboard near the score entry station. With six weeks remaining we will be keeping the scores secret so you need to find out what you need to do soon.

Current gross leader is Stephen Rippon but he is closely followed by Pat Paris, Greg Seymour, George Vlatko Daniel Adams,Tony Rodriguez and Alan Jones. Peter Wheatley and Phil Lewis are among the nett leaders.

Seaside and Valley Veterans Week of Golf

The annual Veterans Tournament held at Jamberoo and Kiama Golf Clubs is set down to be played starting from Monday 25th of November.

Round 1 will be played at Jamberoo, with the first tee time at 7am with both the 1st and 10th tees being utilised. The afternoon tee times will commence at 12.

Rounds 2 and 3 will be played at Kiama on Tuesday 27th and Thursday 28th.

The concluding 4BBB will be held at Jamberoo on Friday 29th. It will be a shotgun start with an 8.30 hit off. A free BBQ will be held on the day.

Entry forms can be found in the Veterans Folder in the Pro-shop.

I must say that the course is looking spectacular at the moment following the rain of last week. Players have appreciated the mild Spring weather and performed to a very high standard in our comps. Best score of the week was David White last Saturday with a whooping 45 points! Joanne Burke scored a very impressive 40 points in the Ladies comp on Tuesday and Ray Sheehan, George Vlatko and Terry Murphy also managed 40 points in comps over the week.

The course is great and with the Greens maintenance completed on Friday look forward to even better conditions in the upcoming weeks.
