Club Matchplay Championships

The 2019 Matchplay championships have commenced and all round 1 matches have been decided.

In the singles Col Booth defeated Shane Townsend in a very good match 2/1. Peter Young tried hard but the experienced Chris Goodwin defeated him 4/2. Peter Francis avoided the bunkers successfully and spanked John Anthony 7/6. Pat Paris now holds the bragging rights over Steve Rippon after beating him 4/2. Dave Ransom just held on to beat a fast finishing Gary Harvey 2/1. Larry Kent had a good win over Don Thompson 3/2. Martin Perry took last year’s finalist Ron Hewson all the way to the 18th before succumbing on the final green. Last year’s champion Ken Bradley has progressed as well with his opponent unavailable.

In the 2nd round Pat Paris showed Dave Ransom how to close out a match with 2 tremendous putts on 15 and 16 and an impossible up and down on 17 to win 2/1. At no stage did Pat trail in this match. Ron Hewson overcame a perilous position trailing by 3 with 4 holes remaining but found that something extra applying  pressure on Larry Kent with good golf to win on the 19th hole. Pat will play Ron in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile in the fourball Steve Rippon and John Anthony had a very difficult assignment in round 1 against Richard Bremner and Peter Saunders. Richard and Pete had several shots on handicap, good past experience and it would require a mighty effort for John and Steve to contain them.  After suffering an early birdie barrage Richard and Pete made a comeback but some fantastic chipping and putting from John saw his team home 5/3.

In the other first round match played Dave Ransom and Col Booth were playing Peter Francis and Wayne Griffiths. In a very exciting match no team led by more than one hole at any stage. It came down to the 18th with Ransom and Booth leading by 1 hole. An excellent 4 metre curling putt by Griffiths forced both of his opponents to putt for a halved hole and a win in the match. The pressure was too much and both missed short putts and the match proceeded to the 19th. The hole was very evenly played until it came to the putting. Pete Francis held his nerve the best and 2 putted from about 8 metres to win the hole and the match.

This Week’s Results

Will somebody turn off the fan!

A little windy it has been – some members would not go out in the wind as they feared they might lose their toupees. If you didn’t mind being buffeted and having your good shots wrecked by an unforseen gust of hurricane force wind then it was a lot of fun. ‘Forget shooting a low score, just enjoy the experience and have fun’ was clearly the mantra of those staunch golfers who withstood the full force of the westerly wind. Hopefully conditions will settle by Saturday.

Some good golf was played despite the wind with Kellie Greaves winning the Ladies Tuesday par event with +2. Larry Kent also played well featuring in all events he played this week showing that being vertically challenged does have its advantages. Phil Green played well on Wednesday with a great 65 nett and any score over 30 last Saturday was an excellent effort.
