- The Jamberoo Mens Open has unfortunately been postponed after Wollongong Golf Club usurped our date with a non-Golf Illawarra sanctioned event. Our event had been long planned and had been given ‘Illawarra Open Series Event’ status but Wollongong’s event is a Golf NSW ‘Vardon’ Event.
To better promote our event, to attract the strongest possible field and to give our sponsors and those of Golf Illawarra better value for money it has been decided to hold the Jamberoo Mens Open now on September 8.
The booking sheet is available in the Golf Shop. - The Lady Veterans Open is set down to be played on Thursday August 1. The Booking Sheet is in the Lady Veterans folder.
- Mens Fourball and Individual Matchplay Championships continue over July and August.
Men’s Eclectic Competition has started
The ‘Fredericks’ IGA’ Eclectic Competition has commenced and will continue until the Gold Medal Playoff in November. There is no entry fee and every stroke or stableford score will be used to gather your best 18 individual hole scores in this time. Last year Greg Seymour was our gross winner and Wayne Griffiths the nett winner.

The Latest in Sartorial Fashion for that special golfing look
To say his opponents and partner were flabbergasted is an understatement when Col Booth turned up to play his first round match in the club 4BBB matchplay championship. Going for that ‘retro look’ Col looked splendid in his collared shirt, tie and vest.
Unfortunately for Col the golf didn’t quite match the fashion as he and his partner Dave Ransom were defeated by Pete Francis and Wayne Griffiths on the 19th hole.
When all first round matches have been played in both the fourball and single Matchplay events a full report will be given in the Daily Cow. In the meantime check out the results on the noticeboard near the entrance to the members lounge.
Course Maintenance Report – July
Course Head Greenkeeper Nick Goodger reports …
Blue tee positions are being preserved for main event days. All members social play and regular competition events will be from the white tees. The introduction of yellow markers for social golfers will soon be implemented.
The spray unit has been calibrated to deliver the proper spray rate which may have been a factor in the deterioration of our greens. The issue has been fixed and the correct amount of chemicals and fertiliser are now being dispensed. New nozzles have been purchased and installed which will provide added improvement. The blue lines on the greens are in place to assist in making sure that an even coverage is achieved.
Dusting of greens continues on a weekly/fortnightly basis to improve the putting surface.
The old tree stumps on the course that can’t be removed will be cut down to ground level and covered with soil.
The small, poorly conditioned and diseased Silver Birch trees on the right hand side of 6th Fairway have been removed. Also two small stunted Jacarandas on the right hand side of the 17th have been removed.
Aeration of the green via verti-draining will be an ongoing practice with a heavy renovation due in spring so that the course will be presented at its best for the Jamberoo Open and avoiding impact on Club Championships.
Road base has been used to improve bridge approaches and remove potential trip hazards. Also used to address the tree root issue on the 6th.
There is still some work to be done to complete the irrigation project. The aim is to complete it by the end of September. Broken Valve boxes on the course are also being replaced.
The spray program to improve the greens will start in July.
Wet areas and areas close to greens have been roped off to avoid cart damage. The Greenkeeper asks that members keep an eye out for visitors using carts and getting them to avoid wet areas during these winter months.
Some of the fairways have been shortened or reshaped to avoid tree roots, cut out mounds or bad areas with fairways brought in closer to the greens and rough areas increased to include back of green protection. A collar is being cut around the greens in an anticlockwise direction with the tees mower to provide a more consistent bounce onto the green.
‘Mud Ball Rule’
A temporary local rule is in place until further notice because of the wet and muddy conditions on some holes following the rain.

“Any ball on the General Area of the course which has mud adhering to it may be marked, lifted, cleaned and replaced”.
This temporary local rule applies from 10-7-2019 until further notice.
Please keep Golf Carts and motorised one-person ride-on buggies away from wet areas of the course.
Competition Voucher and Ball Credits
Members Please Note
If you win a ball in a competition then you have 3 months to claim that ball or to spend it in the golf shop on apparel, equipment or cart hire.
If you win a voucher then you have 3 months to claim that voucher and to use it in our shop, or as a voucher at any of our course sponsors businesses or as Woolworth’s gift cards.
You can also ask the office to transfer your voucher as a credit for next year’s annual membership. You must request this in person. It will not happen automatically as in previous years.
2019 – 2020 Membership Fees
Your membership fees became due on the 1st of June.
The 30 day period of grace has now ended and any member who has failed to pay will have their membership playing rights suspended until a payment is received.
Don’t panic, it’s not too late to make a payment and to have your playing status re-instated.
There are many reasons why you may have forgotten to pay your fees on time and you will not be expunged from the membership. Your name will still be kept on the membership roll. The office staff will be more than willing to accept your payment and to re-instate your membership to full playing status.
Remember, Jamberoo Golf Club still has the best valued membership in the Illawarra and the most user-friendly course, not to mention its natural beauty.
The Week’s Latest Results
Congratulations go to both our Ladies Pennant teams on fine results in this year’s Pennant Series. The Silver Pennant, led by Shirley Dixon, played some outstanding golf early in their season to set the pace. It was hard to maintain this standard and after a few results went against our team they finished a credible third. The Gold Pennant team, led by Judi O’Brien, started strongly and were leading the Pennant come the final round to be played at the tricky Russell Vale course. A very close tussle saw our team lose their match 3-2 and with Russell Vale winning easily in their match the Pennant was lost with a highly credible second place our reward.
Congratulations to all of our Lady Pennant players. You represented our club with distinction, pride and passion, a credit to yourselves and the club.
