News and Views – 14th June

Upcoming Events

This Sunday sees the playing of the Jamberoo Mixed Open with 40 players entered. The Jamberoo Mixed Open is the oldest Open that we play at Jamberoo and is a rarity among Open events at golf clubs being a Canadian Foursomes. Kay Brennan and Bruce Byers were last year’s winners in a 4 hole playoff over Liz Armstrong and Arthur Bosanquet. With Bruce away there will be a new champion team this year.

Saturday 29th of June will see the inaugural playing of the Jamberoo Open Ambrose. Bookings are being taken on the booking sheet in the golf club. If you want a tee time then your best option is to make use of this rather than wait for the 8 day window in ‘Our Golf’. The club wishes to thank major sponsor Oaks Automotive for their kind support of this new event.

Sunday 21st of July is the date set for the Jamberoo Men’s Open. Last year Daniel Nesbitt from the Links at Shell Cove was the winner with a great score of 64, one better than 2017 winner Colin Mitchell, also from the Links Shell Cove. We are expecting another strong field so another great score is definitely on the cards. If you are not a chance to win the low gross then you might perhaps win one of the three grades or the overall nett prize, just like Don Thompson did last year with a nett 63.

Golf Course Etiquette : Removing the Ball from the Hole

How many times has your good putt, seemingly going in the centre of the hole, suddenly veered off in the last couple of centimetres and missed?

Sometimes of course it might be due to a slightly miss-hit putt but here are some other possible causes.

  1. Players are stepping too close to the hole when removing their ball
  2. Players are scooping out the ball with their club instead of their hand
  3. Players are using the flag stick to scoop out the ball.

All of these things damage the hole or its surrounds. All three will lead to a ‘volcano’ effect where the approaching putt will veer off in either direction as it slows down near the hole depending on how it rises up the subsequent slope around the hole. The second and third can cause the actual edge of the hole to be damaged and/or to lift the metal cup edge up higher than it should be causing those ‘bounce backs’.

I have noticed that many players are doing these things on the course so let us all make a determined effort to take the ball out of the hole properly. Carefully remove the flag from the hole and then pick out your ball.

If you can’t reach down that far then purchase the little clip from the golf shop that fits on the top of your putter and which can neatly pick up the ball from the hole.

‘Kingsford’ Nine Hole Comp

Don’t have enough time or energy to play in the main competitions on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday? Then perhaps the ‘Kingsford’ Nine Hole Comp is the answer?

It is played everyday of the week and costs just $3 per game. You can even play it more than once in the same week!

What’s more bonus shots are given each time you play and don’t win a prize!!

Enter now, it is just a walk up start.

Membership Payments and Cards

Just a reminder that June 30 is the last day for payment of the 2019-20 subscription. If you are unable to make a payment before this day then you will be placed on the unfinancial list and will not be eligible to play on the course until your payment has been made. If you haven’t done so then please pick up your invoice from the box in the Golf Shop.

If you want a membership card then please request such as you make your payment.

Proposed New Membership Category

It is to late to introduce it this year but next year we will be creating a new membership category, Life Style Senior. If you hold a Senior’s Card this will be the membership option for you.  What’s more, unlike what you will find with ‘Life Style Vets’ memberships at other clubs, it won’t cost you extra to play in non-veteran comps at Jamberoo. Further details will be given at a later date.

This Week’s Results

The course was playing very hard on Wednesday apparently in the Drummond Golf Stableford. Not one player managed 36 points. The best of the day was club President Phil Hahn with 35 points. A good turn up on the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday round with Dave Newton doing his usual Monday thing and winning. The Ladies Monthly medalists for June were Judi O’Brien, Shirley Walsh and Sue Paul. Well played.

Finally last Saturday Phil Lewis managed the day’s best score with 40 points with Liz Armstrong doing the same in the Ladies comp.

Well played to all this week’s winners.
