Mens’ Foursomes Championship

A small but highly motivated field entered the 2019 Mens’ Foursomes Championship. The weather was perfect for golf and the competition was expected to be tight with several teams having excellent credentials to point to them being successful in this 27 holes alternate shot format Honour Board event.

As is the case at Augusta each year, the winner was not decided “until the back nine on Sunday”. Wayne Arnott and Arthur Bosanquet surged home in 2 over par 36 to grab the championship lead from defending champion Tony Panecasio and new partner John Paul who finished on 118. Only one group remained to challenge this total, which was 2 less than the 2018 winning score and 4 less than the 2017 winning score. Club Champion George Vlatko and Steve Rippon remained on the course and needed a back nine better than 41 to win the title. The 17th hole proved to be pivotal as the hazard in front of the green grabbed their ball and after a 7 they could only muster a final score of 117.

Laudits go to Arthur and Wayne on their well deserved and excellent victory.

There was also a nett prize up for grabs and the competition was very close indeed. Arthur and Wayne could not win both the gross and nett and this left the team of Jeff O’Brien and John Anthony as nett winners by the slimmest of margins of 0.25 of a shot over the unlucky Tony Panecasio and John Paul, 105.75 to 106.

After the game players were treated to a sausage sizzle with potato and garden salads courtesy of Liz Armstrong who along with Shirley Walsh also provided lovely slices of cake.

All players were very appreciative of the ladies fine cooking and I can tell you that I have never seen the sweets disappear so fast!

A terrific club day was enjoyed by all, under ideal conditions on an excellently presented course and it was a shame more players didn’t join in on the festivities. They certainly missed a great day.

Congratulations to our new Foursome Champions, Wayne Arnott and Arthur Bosanquet.
