News from the Course 20th July

Loretta and Phil Green victorious

Congratulations to Loretta and Phil Green who have won the Golf Illawarra playoff in the Keno Mixed fourball championship. Playing on a cold and windy day at the Highlands golf club with slick greens and running fairways, Loretta and Phil have scored a very good score of 43 points to defeat all other teams from Golf Illawarra clubs and have won their way through to the state playoffs to be played at Bonville Golf resort later in the year. This is an all-expenses paid week of golf and is a highly sort after prize. Congratulations Loretta and Phil. Our other pairs Lance and Robyn and Tom and Di also performed credibly each scoring 39 points which gave them top 12 finishes. Congratulations to all our representatives.

Another junior makes his mark

Just as the members get a little respite from young  Nathan then his friend Jaimie Killmore steps up to the plate scoring 45 points on the weekend and pairing with Peter Hughes to win the fourball with 50 points on a countback from the Turners.  Our junior stocks are certainly looking good with these two.

New Single Match Play Competition

A new championship tournament is to be held at Jamberoo golf Club. This will take the format of match play played off the stick without the benefit of handicap. The winner of A division will be awarded the Captain’s Trophy at presentation night while the B division players will play for the Vice-Captains Shield. Look out for the registration form if you are interested.

Jamberoo Open 27th of July

A strong field is assembling for the 2014 Jamberoo Open with 81 players registered at the moment. Among the registrations are five players off a plus handicap, present and past Jamberoo club champions and Open winners and Golf Illawarra dignitaries. Part of the entry for this year’s Open has been allocated for a $3 supershot at the 7th so everybody has the chance to take out the big prize on offer. A BBQ will be held on the day for those interested in a well cooked meal.

Jamberoo Golf Club would like to thank our major sponsor Drummond Golf at Warrawong for their support of our tournament as well as Fredericks IGA for its sponsorship of the nearest the pins. Contact Starter for latest tee time info.

News from the Course 17/7/14

JGC LOGO 300Local Junior Comes Good

If anybody has been looking at the C grade results lately then they would notice the name Nathan Harrington appearing quite frequently. Nathan has been going through a purple patch of form and has reduced his handicap by several shots. More experienced members are quietly waiting for the school holidays to finish so that they can have a chance of winning. Well done Nathan, I don’t think you will be in C Grade much longer.

Monthly Medal Option Trial

The trial of having the option of playing a stableford instead of a stroke round on monthly medal rounds has not been well supported and will not proceed past the trial. The idea behind the request to trial this idea was to encourage those members who won’t play stroke rounds to come out and play and take advantage of their membership. They were not part of the monthly medal and did not reduce the significance of the medal round in any way despite the ill-informed opinions of some. Several other clubs(Kiama, Links Shell Cove, Port Kembla) in the area are already using this concept as it is important to keep numbers playing in club competitions up to reduce financial stress on membership fees.

The members have spoken.

What a tosser!

“It has been wet lately and the grips were slippery”. Well this is what an experienced match committee member said as his club ‘slipped’ from his hand as his shot trickled along the ground after his drive on the 4th in a recent Saturday competition. The club flew, sorry “slipped”, 31.5 metres (further than the ball it must be said). Is this a new record for club slipping? Reports have been sent to the match committee and punitive action is imminent!

Care of the Greens and Course

Members are reminded to take and use sand buckets to repair divot holes on the course. Lately the match committee has noticed several members leaving the first tee without a bucket. Avoid the embarrassment of being told to take a bucket by doing the right thing. Also, don’t just fill in your own divots; look for some other divot holes to repair. There are plenty around.

As for the greens, if you want good greens then it is your responsibility to fix pitch marks and to tap down scuff marks near the hole after putting. Please assist us to keep our greens to the high standard that we all expect.

DSCN00522014 Camp Quality Charity Day

The annual Camp Quality charity day is always a great day out and supports a very worthwhile cause.

Nerada and Les Edmonds from Port Kembla braved the challenging weather conditions to take the 2014 Jamberoo Mixed Open by a stroke

DESPITE the awful weather, with rain, gusty wind and frigid conditions, 24 brave people risked a bad case of pneumonia to compete in the 2014 Jamberoo Mixed Open played on Sunday 15th of June.

Winners on the day with an excellent score of 84 were our visitors from Port Kembla, Nerada and Les Edmonds. They defeated the new pairing of Loretta Green and Stephen Rippon by a shot. Nett winners were Liz Armstrong and Arthur Bosanquet with 73.875 defending the trophy that they won last year.

Bruce Byers deserves special mention as he travelled back from interstate to defend the title with his partner Kay Brennan. Congratulations to our winners and well played to all others who braved the storm to support their club and enjoy the company of their fellow members.

Mixed Foursome spots still open

A reminder that next Sunday (22/6/14), the Mixed Foursomes Championships, will be played over 27 holes. There are still a few tee spots available so please feel free to enter a team.

Matchplay Championships underway

The draws for the Single and Fourball Matchplay Championships have been completed and have been placed on the notice board. Please write down your current Golf Link handicap near your name as this will be your handicap throughout the tournament (unless it goes down). Some competitors have failed to give their contact details so it would be appreciated if you could clearly write down your phone number near your name.

June Monthly Medal

Steve Rippon recovered from a disastrous 2nd hole to record the day’s lowest score in the June monthly medal with a 69. Steve’s round included a hole in one on the 7th where his perfectly struck wedge went straight in without the benefit of a bounce. Steve bookended his ace with birdies at the 6th and 8th holes, an incredible stretch of 4-under par. This was Steve’s 8th career hole in one and his first since 1989.

In the Wednesday 4th June Drummond Golf stableford competition played from the Blue Course, club champion, Steve Rippon, playing off a plus 1 handicap, scored a terrific 42 points. Steve’s round included 8 birdies and a single bogey scored on the last with a three putt. This round equates to a 60 off the stick!

Steve has been in excellent form of late where he has scored several rounds in the low sixties. As a result Steve has now been allocated a plus 2 handicap, where he will have to score birdies on the 7th and 9th holes just to get 2 stableford points.

Lowest Round of the Year Award

Tom Perrson
Tom Perrson

A prize is awarded each year to the player who achieves the lowest score from a stroke round played from the back plates. Tom Persson leads this competition with a 67.

Course record holder Adrian Gehrmann has also had several low rounds from the plates as has Steve Rippon so the competition is very intense with the best golfers in the club looking to win this prestigious award.

Mixed Foursomes Championship -Sunday June 22

A rumour has been circulating that a new mixed team has been seen on the course practicing for the up-coming Mixed Foursomes Championship. Further, a reliable witness also noticed another very successful team practicing together on Saturday. Sounds to me like a new record score might be needed this year!

The time sheet is available from the golf shop so hurry and get your team together and get a position in the field.
