Mens Pennants – Final preliminary Round.

by Dave Ransom.

An interesting day on the various courses played upon today. At the beautiful Shoalhaven Heads both our White Horse Cup teams were in action.

Cowpats show Grit.

The Section 2 team, also known as the Cowpats, were playing the very talented Vincentia team who had sent for reinforcements to challenge us and perhaps qualify for the finals. On our part we needed to win to cement our semi-final berth, holding a narrow games for and against margin over the Port Kembla team.

With two matches in the hatch it was one game apiece and we trailed in most of the remaining 5 games deep into the back nine.

In a determined effort, great play and a never-say-die attitude, saw the team reverse the proceedings and come out on top 5 matches to 2. This means the Cowpats continue the tradition of qualifying for the White Horse Cup semi-finals next weekend at Moss Vale.

Well played team.

Winners today were Stef Tinworth 2/1, Rob Young 4/3, Matt Tedeschi 2 up, Andrew Ransom 5/4 and Peter Francis 2 up. Phil Gosling almost pulled off a great comeback eventually losing on the 17th. Peter Young led early but some clutch putts from his female opponent saw the result go Vincentia’s way 3/2.

Good luck in next week’s semi-final.

2024 White Horse Cup Cowpats.

Magpies end season flying high.

A terrific final match saw our section 4 WHC team snap a great 5-2 victory against Russell Vale to finish 2nd on the final table with more individual game wins than the leading team.

Winners today were John Auguston 7/6, Pat Paris 4/3, Phil Hahn 2 up, Warren Joannou 7/6 and Don Thompson 5/4. Peter Hackett and Matt Ross both played well but lost close encounters.

An excellent season by the Magpies.

B Pennants fall just short.

Our B Pennant team completed their season with a narrow loss to the Links Shell Cove 3-2.

Winners today were Lee Hayward 2up and Joel McIntosh 1 up. Dan Adams, John Anthony and Steve Rippon all lost with Dan losing on the last green unluckily.

Captain Chris Leckey was proud of the performance of our team over the season and looks forward to next year with the team gaining plenty of experience in this strong A grade division.

C Pennants suffer sad loss.

The C Pennant team could not sustain their late season charge and lost today 4-1 against a strong Grange team. A win would have seen the team progress to the semi-finals but it was not to be with the Grange overcoming playing at Jamberoo to qualify in our place.

Our winner today was Les Skarratts who continued his excellent form to win his match 6/5.

Other team members today were Bob Neilson, Ken Bradley and Mal Hoy and stand in captain, Tom Zimmermann. All played well but just could not match the determined Grange players.

Team and Club Captain, Larry Kent, was extremely pleased and proud of the team who came within a couple of holes of qualifying.

We look forward to next year.

Matt Tedeschi presented with 3 golf balls for his eagle in last weeks match.

Scoring an eagle 2 on the par 4 ninth hole at Gerringong, Matt earned the traditional prize presented to Jamberoo Members in competitions. Three golf balls.

I was lucky enough to witness the magnificent shot played by Matt from the middle of the fairway. The ball landed softly on the rock hard Gerringong green, released towards the hole and went in like a well struck putt.

Congratulations Matt.

News from the Club – International Women’s Day

by Pam Middlebrook, Womens President.

How great does the Bromeliad Garden look on the 9th hole? Congratulations to Sharon – for your vision, design and planting of the area, Bruce – for his assistance in collecting and assembling the plants, and Cheryl – for propagating and donating the Bromeliads.

While talking about gardens a special mention goes to Liz Armstrong for her inspirational leadership at the course. Thanks Liz.

Jamberoo Women Golfers excel away from home.

Pam Middlebrook (Womens President)

It was great to hear that two of our A grade players, Liz Armstrong & April Van Woerkom, again entered the “Club House Cup” tournament, held at The Australian Golf Course in February. Although neither player were in the winning circle, Liz stated she improved her score by seven from the previous year & April feels she has had some success on this challenging course.

Cheryl Smee was runner up in the NSW VGA Shield (B Grade-36 holes) at the ‘Illawarra Week of Golf’.

Kim Oborn was runner up in “The Central West” NSW VGA Shield (C Grade-54 holes).

Congratulations to all our members who travel around the state to play competitive golf and doing Jamberoo proud.

News from the Course – Sunday March 3

Cowpats surrender their lead but good news elsewhere.

by Dave Ransom.

Our White Horse Cup Section 2 team, otherwise known as the ‘Cowpats” suffered their first loss of the season against Sussex Inlet today at Gerringong. The final score was 6 -1 against.

Some of our matches were tight but the Sussex Inlet team managed to win each of these. Shane Townsend, Andrew Ransom and Peter Francis all lost on the 17th, and Noel Laman lost on the 18th.

Phil Gosling and Peter Young also lost narrowly.

A highlight was the impressive 4/3 win by Matt Tedeschi which included an eagle 2 on the par 4, 9th hole.

Only a win next week will see the team qualify for a semi-final berth.

C Pennant ambush the Grange at the Grange.

by Larry Kent.

Today’s game ended with a great team win 3/2 over the home team, the Grange.

Alan Jones was always in front matching his opponent, win for win, on the front nine. Applying the pressure on the back nine, Alan finally won 4/3.

Les Skarratts led early but lost his lead and trailed by 1 hole after losing the 16th. He won the 17th to square the match and closed it out to win it on 18.

Mal Hoy, clearly confused by the location of the venue, travelled to Port Kembla by mistake. He turned up 1 minute before hit off after discovering his error and with no time to warm up. He surrendered 6 holes on the front nine but fought back to be dormy 3, eventually going down 4/2. Ken Bradley was chasing all day, eventually trailing 3 down at the turn, finally losing the match 4/3.

The ‘old fox’, Tom Zimmermann, worked to a 2 hole lead after 16 holes, then promptly lost the 17th. His tee shot found the water on the tough par 3 18th where his opponent carried over the green with his tee shot. After taking his penalty stroke Tom’s next shot finished just short of the green. His opponent was over the green in 1 with the advantage, but proceeded to muff two chips. Tom chips in for a 4. His opponent has a putt to square, misses & then misses again. So Tom wins 2 up.

To wrap it up it was a great team win. I am a very happy & proud captain pleased with the move to play Les at number 2 which paid off.

Magpies peck Kiama at Kiama.

by Don Thompson, team Captain.

Our section 4 White Horse Cup team faced the difficult task of playing Kiama at Kiama. A very close encounter ensued with the match finishing with a 3.5 matches each draw.

No fewer than 3 of the matches finished as all square on the 18th. Pat Paris, Warren Joannou and Leon Polestico managing this feat.

Matt Ross won his match 4/3 and Rob McLean 3/2 in excellent performances.

Peter Hackett, down by 2 holes and Brian Bennett were unsuccessful today but played with determination.

B Pennant away against the Links at Moss Vale.

by Chris Leckey, team Captain.

A strong effort by our B Pennant team today but the Links Shell Cove proved too strong on the day, 3.5 matches to 1.5.

A great performance was recorded by team Captain Chris Leckey winning 7/5 and Joel McIntosh continued his good pennant form squaring his match.

Lee Haywood and Anthony Smith tried hard but both narrowly lost 3/2 and 2/1 respectively.

Kyle Van Woerkom found the going tough against his very low handicapped opponent losing 4/3 despite breaking his handicap.

Overall a gallant peformance against strong opposition.

News From the Course March 2

A Reminder about Member Accounts.

Report authorised by Bob Neilson, Secretary, and David Ransom, Director, on behalf of the Board of Directors of Jamberoo Golf Club.

The Jamberoo Golf Club Membership Financial Year runs from the 1st June until the 31st May.

Too many members have Trophy and Ball account balances that the club can no longer afford to cover as they are a large liability. Members are requested to use their trophy accounts and not just keep them unused. The amounts are hard earned and we have no wish to have members forfeit these.

Relating to the use of trophy accounts. The idea is that members’ trophy accounts have to be closed off, basically at the end of the financial year; they cannot carry over into the following year. If a member has more than a year’s subscription fees in their trophy account, the excess will go to the following year’s fees in advance, but must not just carry over. If a member leaves the club and fails to renew their membership, any funds left unused in the trophy account will be forfeited to the Club.

Here are the rules.

Any balance remaining in a member’s trophy account (including their ball account) at the end of each JGC financial year (31st of May) must be redeemed by the end of the following month (30th June). Trophy accounts can be used to purchase items from the golf shop, used for cart hire and competition fees, used at Drummond Golf (if the balance is more than $100) or to pay all or part of annual subscription fees (unless a member chooses to pay monthly). However, unused trophy account balances as at 30th June cannot carry over into the following financial year.

If there are any funds still in a member’s trophy account after 30th June, that balance will be automatically credited toward their subscription fees for the following year(s). If a member chooses to pay monthly for the coming year, unused funds in their trophy account after 30th June will be forfeited to the Club, so please spend these in any of the ways suggested above in this case.

If a member fails to fully renew their membership by the 14th of July, any funds left unused in their trophy account will be forfeited to the Club when the member is subsequently removed from the membership register.

Trophy vouchers won by visitors must be redeemed at the club within 3 months of issue or will be cancelled at the expiry of the period.

Those members who would like to arrange the balance of their trophy and ball accounts to be transferred into their members account before the cut-off date should see Marie in the Office who will be happy to assist you.
