It was one of those mornings at Jamberoo—grey skies, damp air, and a radar that looked more like a Jackson Pollock painting than a weather forecast. A few brave Golf Warriors had already teed off, undeterred by the drizzle and driven by optimism (or stubbornness). The rest of us gathered under the verandah, phones in hand, squinting at the Bureau’s radar like it held the secrets of the universe.
Ron Hewson rolled in, no windscreen wipers, windows down , no hesitation. “What rain?” he scoffed, dismissing the radar like it was fake news. Professor “The Brick” emerged from his car with sleeves rolled up and shirt half-unbuttoned—part philosopher, part action hero—ready to wrestle the weather into submission. Peter Hughes, unable to stream Kayo at home, was desperate for any form of live sport—even if it meant soggy socks and a muddy lie. Meanwhile, Peter Young’s phone buzzed like a stockbroker’s on budget day. We started wondering if they were missed calls or just a secret weather hotline.
The banter was strong. The camaraderie is stronger. But as we wandered out from the verandah and looked skyward, reality set in: the course was saturated, the fairways fragile, and the decision clear.
