Jamberoo Takes on a Strong Kiama Side.
by Larry Kent
The Super Senior Pennant is a pennant contested by players 65 years and older. This is the first year Jamberoo has entered a team.
The Jamberoo SSP team faced a formidable challenge today against a well-drilled Kiama side boasting five players off single-figure handicaps, with the remaining team members all solid competitors. From the outset, we knew we were in for a tough match.
Despite the difficulty of the task, our team competed with determination and spirit—particularly impressive given that half of our players were experiencing scratch match play for the first time.
Gary and John battled valiantly but went down 8/5 and 8/6 respectively. David couldn’t quite find his rhythm on the greens and eventually lost 6/5. Tim and Peter Willis both fought hard in their matches, each going down 4/3 in contests that were tighter than the scores suggest.
Peter Francis took his match all the way to the 18th in a tremendous display. All square after 17, his opponent played a superb chip to within 30 cm, and Peter’s putt narrowly missed, resulting in a narrow 1 down loss.
Our top two players, Chris and Les, both delivered excellent performances. Their matches swung back and forth throughout. Chris earned a well-deserved square result after 18 holes, while Les, who was 3 up at the turn, maintained his lead to finish with a 2/1 victory.
While the overall result didn’t fall our way, every player represented Jamberoo Golf Club with pride. The mix of experience and first-timers handled the pressure of this format with great resilience. A commendable effort from the entire team.
