A Jamberoo Icon

It’s Monday morning at the Roo—Vets Day—but something’s missing. The car park’s quiet, the magpies aren’t even stirring, and there’s a noticeable hush where there used to be a roar. Then someone says it aloud, “Where’s Phil Gosling?”

Phil wasn’t just the first to arrive—he was the spark that lit the day. That unmistakable, “Hooow’s everyone!?” would boom across the car park like a starter’s pistol, waking up the course, the clubhouse, and every sleepy putter in sight.

Without it, you can feel the stillness. We’re all just waiting for that familiar call—the one that told us it was game on, the Roo was awake, and good times were guaranteed.

If you played Pennants over the past few decades, you knew Phil Gosling. And if you played against him—you remembered it. In his prime, Phil was simply unmatched. He didn’t just play with competitiveness—he wore it like a second skin. You could hear groans when teams saw they were paired against him.

Phil not only raised our competitive standards—he lifted our spirits. He gave generously of his time, his stories, and his support. We haven’t lost a member today—we’re tipping our hats to a legend who has left an indelible mark on our club.

So, on behalf of the Members, the Board, and your many mates—thank you, Phil.

For the passion, the laughs, the lessons, and the memories.

  1. Thank you young Col Booth. I have not left Jamberoo golf club. I am spending the winter on dry bowling greens. My footwear does not get wet and muddy and I don’t lose any balls that have plugged in the green verdant soil of my favourite second home. When the flies begin to whisper their longing for my company, I shall return to my Rainbow Valley. Missing you all but not the muddy divots.
