Jamberoo Golf Club – C Pennant Final Report

What a difference an inch can make?

By Dave Ransom.

Jamberoo Golf Club is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of our C Pennant team in today’s final against Kembla Grange winning a very close encounter 4 to 2. The match was a thrilling culmination of years of hard work, and often heartbreak, but perseverance, and passion for the game saw the first win in the C Pennant for the club after many years of trying.

At the half way stage we trailed in 4 matches and led in only 2. Things were looking grim against the big hitters from the Grange.

Bringing a high level of skill and determination and showing true grit and composure under pressure, our team was able to withstand the challenge from the gallant Kembla Grange team and emerge with the pennant.

Pat Paris applied the pressure by hitting fairways and putting solidly and won his match 2/1.

Tom Zimmermann fought back brilliantly on the back nine and nailed the win with a great breaking putt on the 17th hole winning 2/1.

Glen Bayo was hitting the ball sweetly but the tricky greens and flag positions and the excellent form from his opponent proved too much losing 5/4.

Alan Jones played his usual competitive game, but his opponent was in fine form losing 3/2.

Andrew Ransom brought his A game today and led by 5 at the half way point hitting every fairway and being on or close to every green. He scored a birdie on the par 5 11th hole only to lose that hole to an eagle. Andrew survived that setback and closed out his match 6/5.

With Jamberoo leading 3-2 it came to John Anthony to put on the finishing touches. The problem was he trailed by 3 holes with 7 to play.

After hitting his tee shot on the difficult par 3 12th hole extremely close to the out of bounds his ball was found an inch inside the line. That inch proved to be critical and a turning point in the outcome of the match.

John all of a sudden found form with his putter and made a series of one putts for halves or wins and on the 18th tee the match was even.

Both parred the par 5 18th with both players canning pressure putts to put the match into a playoff.

John had holed a 110-metre shot for birdie the first time he played the hole but, in the playoff, he played the hole in textbook style. His opponent just missed his 15m birdie putt leaving John a 10-metre putt to win the match. The putt never looked like missing, and to raucous applause from his fellow Kookaburras, our team had broken the hoodoo and won the pennant.

A big thank you to our other Kookaburras who were valuable members of the team throughout the season. Thanks to Ken Bradley and Bob Neilson.

Thank you also to the support shown by Shane Townsend, Wayne Griffiths, Col Booth, Christine Paris, and Larry Kent by acting as caddies today, with very important inputs to the team success on the day. Thanks especially to Wayne who was there every week of the season and a valuable member of our team.

Thank you and commiserations to the Kembla Grange team, a great bunch of players who gave it their best shot.

From the opening tee shot to the final putt, the Jamberoo team demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and focus. Their teamwork was a standout feature of the day, with players supporting each other both on and off the course. Encouragement and a genuine camaraderie were evident, embodying the spirit of Jamberoo Golf Club.

While the result on the day was hard-fought, it was the unity and resilience of the team that truly stood out. The Club is incredibly proud of the way our players represented Jamberoo—both in performance and in character.

Congratulations to all involved in the C Pennant campaign. Your achievement is a testament to your dedication and the strong spirit of our club.
